Ministry - Smothered Hope Lyrics

Withered rope you hang what's empty
Can't remain to put it simply
In time
Cry the hollow words to sing
With false disguise smothered hope
Fly from sorrow for a new
Divine tomorrow

I just don't want to know anymore

Life shifts up and down
Everybody knows it's wrong why
Don't you care?
Now do it seem fair?
It's not in the rhyme or reason
So it goes with every season
Crawl to top fall through bottom
First hand love is really rotten
Slice of life find what's plenty
Inch towards a sanctuary
Light with me inside the
Womb I know everyone
Everybody knows it's me it's my voice,
My voice cries out obscenity sightless eye
Regard my past sometimes it should

I just don't want to know anymore.

Yeah, it wasn’t supposed to be released on TMIATTTT. This is a live recording from that tour and released on the b-side of Burning Inside.

yep. that's genuine. how the real scene was. incredible bands and kegs of beer for not allot of hard earned bones. I actually didn't get to see many bands because of abject poverty most bands in the naked pueblo played house gigs like the violent femmes and others. nowhere else to play then. now they have the rialto but shows cost like 20 bucks ore more a head it's ridiculous and for only one or two bands. suicidal tendencies was 20 bucks a head but they said they really rocked the house. I never got to see social distortion and they played here many times after they failed to show up for a gig when me and friends were waiting outside wrex a place for gigs on broadway one night they said it was a heroin overdose or piece of glass in the eye. the people I was with later became The Host and then after that they said the lead singer a very good friend died but not how or why. he was always preaching Eire as the promised land everyone was going to go there and everything would be better with cold black Guiness and sexy willing girls. oh yeah, great track. We call him Uncle Al (Jorgensen) because Uncle Charlie died not guilty in prison a few years ago.

I didn't think it was supposed to be released on the album since it's a live Skinny Puppy cover... but possibly? I'd say it has more of a chance of being included on In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up but you can just grab Necronomicon for an alternate live version.

  4. J.... V....

It was released a B-Side on Burning Inside. It was never supposed to be on any album. Not sure where you got your info but it's incorrect.

    Skinny Puppy forever

@Jhonny Cage X Rage Now do it seem fair?

Ministry covering Skinny Puppy is awesome, I still have to find if Skinny Puppy ever covered Ministry

  9. h.... ....

Guitar riff repeated over and over is so damn boring and mixed too loud, completely ruins the song.

    h.... ....

Tape or CD is what you need

To set ya'll straight: this is a Skinny Puppy song. Oghr was touring with Ministry for their Mind is a Terrible Thing To Taste tour. Mike Scaccia from Rigor Mortis played guitar, Nivek was on vocals, the rest was Al's band. Best show ever, Ian Mackaye was there, most of Revco..................I saw five bands for one ticket. It was the best show ever.

    E.... H....

Ogre was the most badass in that stage :p

    E.... H....

    Erik Houghton sounds amazing

    E.... H....

I was at the Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste shows, saw them in Hollywood at the Paladium, and when a day or 2 later to see them in ventura... Great show, 2 drummers and a drum machine, Ogre was there, but the person who did the Pailhead stuff was not Ian. Unless he happened to be at your show, but he didn't tour that one.

    E.... H....

Ho yeah I remember that Rigor Mortis guitarist. Very intense. In Montreal at some point he climbed on top of the barbwire and then made a crazy dive into the crowd. It was almost insane. :O

This many years later, Ive gotten alot older... not wearing the uniforms anymore. Still love the music and even as much hearing stories like this.
    So envious!

And this summer Ministry touring with KMFDM and Front Line Assembly... No Canadian dates for me.

  11. A.... ....

Ridiculously good track. Best live Ministry ever IMO, and if I had to tell anyone what Ministry at their best sounded like, it's this. I could listen to Thieves, Burning Inside, this, every few years and never need to hear any more Ministry. Add Pailhead's Trait to the rotation and that's enough Al Jourgensen for me.

  12. D.... S....

This is reminiscent of the music in The Breakfast Club when Bender is crawling through the ceiling. I wonder if that music inspired this song?

    D.... S....

Oghr mentioned bands like Portion Control in interviews .. if you check out their album Psycho-Bod Saves the World - its not hard to hear the influence on Oghr and SP.

  13. D.... G....

Not an unreleased track. B-side of Burning Inside 12" single. It's a Skinny Puppy with Ogre guesting on vocals

  14. D.... M....

Doesn't sound like a Ministry song. The melody, beats and lyrics are purely SP. This would have been misplaced on A Mind is a Terrible thing to taste, not at all the same. https://www.whosampled.com/cover/271322/Ministry-Smothered-Hope-Skinny-Puppy-Smothered-Hope/

  15. P.... A....

Mr. Pinkerton: You, sir, are incorrect. This live version of "Smothered Hope"was, indeed, performed by Ministry and released as a b-side on Ministry's "Burning Inside" 12" single. Al and Ogre were friends at the time (Al even introduced Ogre to heroin. What a pal!), Al had performed on and produced Skinny Puppy's "Rabies" album, so it makes perfect sense that Ministry would cover this (or any) SP song during this time period. Class dismissed, son.

    P.... A....

Not to mention Ogre was a member of Ministry at the time. He mostly did backup vocals and random instruments live but during this era he'd frequently step up and do lead vocals on this cover (as on this recording) since it was something he knew all the words to and could give Al a chance to catch his breath.

    P.... A....

#WoW ,Thank you for promoting Heroin use ,it's ruined so many lives and deprived Al from acknowledging his "With Sympathy" years ! Thank you very much for promoting the drug Cartels of South America .

    P.... A....

So ogre didn't use heroin before and Al introduce ogre to be a yunkie??

  16. m.... P....

It's a Skinny Puppy song in which I believe this was recorded and Orge performed it live onstage with Ministry being Skinny Puppy was touring during this time for the Album Ain't it Dead Yet(in which this song is off of) Not sure why Ministry would release it on their album being it's not one of their songs. My point being is that you are wrong in the description

    m.... P....

I hate when people post stuff like this in there descriptions

  17. A.... M....

This is real !! Great Stuff !!!

  18. P.... V....

classic skinny puppy. scary and dystopic. or maybe it is not imaginary.

    Skinny Puppy cover_

    S.... [....

Interesting cover considering the fact that Ogre performs this song.

  20. m.... ....

I remember my old friend Andy (RIP) had this single on vinyl. When I saw the name Smothered Hope on the B-side, being a huge Skinny Puppy fan, I was pretty psyched. Man I miss those days...

    m.... ....

May I ask Andy's last name?
