Milsap, Ronnie - She Even Woke Me Up To Say Goodbye Lyrics

Mornings come and, Lord, my mind is achin', yes it is
Sunshine standing quietly at my door
Just like the dawn, my heart is silently breaking
With my tears it goes tumbling to the floor

Once again the whole town will be talking, yes they will
Lord I've seen the pity that's in their eyes
They could never understand it's her sorrow, it's not a man
And no matter what they say, we know she tried

Baby's packed her soft things and she's left me, she's left me, she's left me
And I know she didn't mean to make me cry
It's not her heart, Lord, it's her mind she didn't mean to be unkind
Why she even woke me up to say goodbye
It's not her heart, Lord, it's her mind she didn't mean to be unkind
Why she even woke me up to say goodbye

Goodbye, baby

I remember hearing this song in the early 70s. It took me a while to find the vinyl album. Somewhere along the way, I lost the vinyl album, but later I found the CD. This, and the title cut, A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME, are among my favorite songs by Ronnie.

You can feel the pain in his voice.

I have the Warner Brothers 45 of this. An underrated classic and a key record between his R&B career and his successful run as a country artist of note.

One of the greatest songs ever written and nobody sang it better than Ronnie Milsap. I had the honor of playing this song when I was on the air at KTOM Radio in 1976.

Millsappmania, thank you for posting this song!! I had it on a hit songs by various artists 8 track in the mid-seventies and this was the best song on the tape. I've been searching for this tune by RM for several years. While the song has been recorded by numerous artists, inc the writer Mickey Newbury, for me Ronnie's version is the definitive one with his soul and raw emotion unmatched in other versions. I also really like the instruments and arrangement. Once again thanks! John
