Joe Jackson didn't think his son Marlon could sing so they used singers other than the Jacksons to sing background vocals to Michael or Jermaine's lead vocal tracks. A common practice in the music industry if you weren't a self contained band.

I feel bad for what happened to them though. They should’ve been more honest upfront about them miming studio singers... they might’ve had better luck that way.
