Miller, Roger - Where Have All The Average People Gone Lyrics

The people in the city call me country because of how I walk and talk and smile
Well I don't mind them laughin' in the city but the country folks all say I'm citified
The fightin' men may say that I'm a coward because I never pushed no one around
Gentle people call me troublemaker cause I'll always fight and stand my ground
Funny I don't fit where have all the average people gone
Some pious people point and call me sinner because to them I've never seen the light
Other folks think of me as a preacher I'm just doin' what I think is right
The wealthy people think that I am a hobo lean and hungry writin' mornful songs
And the poor poor people think I am a rich man but really I'm just tryin' to get along
Yes it's funny I don't fit tell me where have all the average people gone
And the government has given me a number to simplify my birth and life and death
And still my woman thinks I'm awful important
Like moon and sun and sea and sky and breath
Yes it's funny I don't fit where have all the average people gone
Funny I don't fit where have all the average people gone

These songs should still be played on radio, some of the best!

  13. s.... h....

Real talk. Wise men speak from heart. Roger does with rhyme, beat, and inspiration!!! What a treasure.

  14. m.... 1....

A great song. I grew up listening to my father's albums. More true than ever.

  15. S.... J....

    Great Song!

  16. D.... P....

It since gust ga genralized asalt

  17. m.... ....

The audio on this is all glitchy.

    m.... ....

    mastertimb it’s pretty old 😉

  18. T.... M....

Timely in the age of grade inflation, youth sport trophies awarded for showing up, and wealthy parents cheating their kids into elite universities.

  19. R.... A....

I love the background organ. Roger Miller taught me to appreciate country music like I've never did.

  20. I.... M....

This song cuts deep through me as a 26 year old man "The Government has given me a number, to simplify my birth, and life, and death. And still my woman thinks I'm awful important, like moon, and the sun, and the sea, and sky, and breath" I heard this song in the car. Most country songs I have listened to never spoke to me like this one did. Whoever wrote this is my kind of songwriter, he's direct and that makes for some strong lyricism. The songwriter I found out is Dennis Linde.

    I.... M....

listen to a song called Husbands and Wives by Roger

  21. j.... ....

I'm a big Roger Miller fan ... But, never heard this song before. Good !

  22. S.... P....

First time I've heard this song. Loved it. Thanks for posting. ♥

  23. S.... G....

I think we can all agree that Roger was a genius, however, this song was written by Dennis Linde. Dennis also wrote hundreds of other songs you've heard before, such as Bubba Shot The Jukebox, Goodbye Earl, John Deere Green, Callin' Baton Rouge, etc.

    S.... G....

Thanks for the info, I always thought it was Roger.

    S.... G....

    @docgima me too

  24. k.... ....

Really feelin this now. Age 57 in this new bizzaro world. The Sillier it is the more they hold to it as gospel.

  25. G.... F....

This is more relatable now than ever .

  26. S.... M....

I've never related to a song as much as I have to this one

  27. C.... D....

Dennis Linde wrote it but Roger made it great in the way that only he could do.

  28. C.... T....

This song gets more true and appropriate every day

  29. B.... E....

LOVED Roger Miller as a kid; first time I'd heard this tune. Hits home. One place I can tell you the average people HAVEN'T gone, and that's to Washington and the media. The average people have either lost their voice or been drowned out by the political extremists. Average people don't treat their countrymen like the enemy; average people aren't avarice people. Average people try to change the world by first taking care of their little corner of it, and treating others the way they'd like to be treated. And for that we are swept under the carpet of Pop Culture and Identity Politics, and for the most part we're labelled as "deplorables" by arrogant politicians, smug hipsters, and entertainers who are only too glad to take average people's money while showing disdain for those average people. Part of Roger Miller's appeal was his "averageness," even as he grew into stardom. His humility and good nature are awfully hard to find in the entertainment industry anymore. As much as average people.

    B.... E....

    Well said 👏

  30. S.... O....

    Love this song. 🌹

  31. C.... L....

    Beautiful song!

  32. d.... h....

Roger Miller was a genius in all respects. His lyrics are clever, his sense of humor is brilliant (watch his interviews!), and he's so very genuine and open when he wants to be. I find myself laughing and crying to his songs often.

  33. L.... D....

Funny I don't fit where have all the average people gone?Who stands up for goodness and justice?Who loves the way we should to one another? Life has changed to greed and I just pray we teach our children well before it's too late. God bless the good guys who stand up for the under dog, the poor, the needy, the sick and the lonely.beautiful song written to a t. Love everybody and never roll another man.

    L.... D....

Yeah, some people think the pledge of allegiance, as modified by Eisenhower, reads "one nation, under Dog" (dyslexic I guess) when it was originally written by a socialist agnostic, disregarding country origins, and stating that our country is not a Democracy, but a Republic... funny that.
The original Pledge of Allegiance: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
Also ironic, how divisive some people are when it comes to politics. Me? I don't care anymore.

  34. C.... ....

    Such a great song

  35. M.... ....

True to form, the man was decades ahead of his time. Pure genius.

  36. j.... ....

It was the average people who voted in an average but successful president whose greatest asset is that he is not a professional politician and now we are all even more hated and called deplorable by oligarchy. But finally there is hope for a US government of, by and for the average people… Good luck America…

  37. P.... M....

This is a question I go around asking myself all the time ... and it turns out Roger Miller was asking the same thing. Bob Dylan, eat your heart out. This man was a true poet with a true voice, a national treasure who thought he was 'average.' Not an ounce of narcissism or pretension in his work. He didn't try to be the 'voice of a generation' ... he didn't 'try to be' anything - he just was. Was the voice of real people of all ages, everywhere. Rest in peace, Mr. Miller, we love you.

    P.... M....

Polly Roger is great but comparein him to DYLAN GIRL PLEASE WAY OFF!!!!!!!!

    P.... M....

@Unapproved Truth BTW "Robert Zimmermann" is not a "jewish" but a "german" name like Hoffman, too. Of course Karl Marx was both and so finally your anti-Semitic "Cultural Marxism" conspiracy theory garbage proves "right" again.

    P.... M....

only an idiot would think they could compliment someone by putting someone else down. Even Roger respected Dylan

    P.... M....

That what you said is true and beautiful

    P.... M....

he was great rest in peace Roger Miller

  38. T.... G....

He had a way of being very clever with words. Miss this kind of simple, thoughtful music.

  39. D.... G....

First time I've heard this. I love guys like RogerMiller, Roy Clark, Ringo Starr since they have a sense of humor.
Nothing funny about this song - hits too close to 'home'.

  40. m.... ....

What a fantastic name and or title for a song.

  41. j.... s....

    thanks again Roger

  42. L.... M....

    cool song

  43. D.... N....

Fuck, this song connects with me. Reminds me of Supertramp's "Logical Song" and the Dee Dee-penned "Outsider" by The Ramones. The pain of never fitting in and always feeling alone /:

  44. s.... m....

He sang the past and the future...the world is still the same...if not worse.

  45. j.... g....

And people say good music came out only in the late 60s...haha so wrong they were

  46. A.... ....

A song for today. Everything is black and white, left and right.

    A.... ....

    Downright prophetic.

    A.... ....

In this Matrix world we temporally live in . You will notice how life is never fair when you are born averaged . A averaged person can be born into wealth and eventually become broke . A averaged person who was abused as a child will not receive pity . but just words like . Get over it and stop feeling sorry for yourself you bitch or you weak person. But when you are born crippled , mentally retarded with no real critical thinking, beautiful, intelligent or talented , than you have everything handed to you . where you are praised , respected and pitied . And you also get to work at what you enjoy doing. while a averaged person is forced to be a slave or is collecting government assistance that doesn't allow you to enjoy life. and that is because a average person doesnt lack commonsense like those who rule the world ..

    A.... ....

@TricisattheH omeofthecowardlylions slow down on the coffee

    A.... ....

man, what are y’all talkin bout? this song is to set aside those dualities. sit on neither side of the line without being the line that separates

    A.... ....

I been listening to the impeachment hearings for the last couple days.... this song is heartbreakingly true

  47. D.... D....

I love this man, incredible artist. total Fan

  48. t.... v....

    c.... k....

+carl kirby wish i could tell Dave THANK YOU

  52. D.... P....

    thanks christiancowboy1

  53. C.... ....

Great stuff! From a jack to a king, and the B side, parade of broken hearts, got me into country music as a kid in England.

  54. A.... W....

always a pleasure to hear somethin from the heart how i miss.......

  55. R.... ....

Where have all the Rodger millers gone? thats where
where I want to go. thank you Roger Miller!

    R.... ....

+Ronald Whitler Well, if you add some cynicism and take away the voice we do have Tom Waits.

  56. C.... W....

    Great song

  57. W.... ....

It's transcendent when, after telling us how average he is and how the government treats him as just another citizen, the last verse suddenly reminds us that even an average guy can be far from average if he wins the heart of one other average person.

    W.... ....

+Whofan1000 Very nice interpretation I believe

  58. C.... L....

I can relate to this song so much. Such a great tune. He is missed down here.

  59. K.... ....

Always loved listening to Roger Miller. This song in particular resonates with me.

Where HAVE all the average people gone?

  60. T.... ....

He was a peculiar man. He was awesome.

  61. G.... ....

Why is his name look like Roger MiLLER, everything in Milller is caps except I.
    AMAZING SONG AND PERSON!!!!

    G.... ....

50 years later & you point out a layout artist's creative skills no one else has thought about!

    G.... ....

Hahaha I guess they realised the uppercase 'i' looks a lot like lowercase 'L' and rather than just doing "ill" ( instead of "Ill"), they thought they had to do the other extreme. Hahaha funny to think. Who knows

    G.... ....

hey if you look at the length of the letters, maybe they had to capitalise them to get them to fit across the entire record. But then again why leave out "i" hahahaha

  62. D.... M....

'cause i will always fight and stand my ground.

  63. d.... d....

I grew up listining to this music. Thanks for the post. Its a joy to here now that I've figured out how to get here.

  64. l.... n....

    lol so did johnny knoxville

  65. l.... ....

The Avett Brothers cover this song and do a great job with it! Good that they are keeping this great song out there.

  66. B.... H....

This should be the quality of lyricism every songwriter aims to reach.
