Miller, Roger - The Tom Green County Fair Lyrics

You know it's funny how certain things stick with you thru the years,
Like how it fells to be ten years old at the County fair

Hotdog stand,
When you're hungry hotdogs smell so doggone grand
Hoppin' thru the sawdust, runnin' with my brothers
Head to toe we're smilin', at the Tom Greene county fair

Rodeo,
Tom Greene county fairs got one fine rodeo
The cowboys are the greatest, the clown he is so funny
You bust your britches laughing, at the Tom Greene county fair

Well a Sunday at the fair can make a memory more valuable than gold
Especially when you're ten years old

Ferris Wheel,
Just like an airplane in the sky, that's how you feel
Look down and see the people, wave your arms and holler
Everybody's laughing at the Tom Greene county fair

Night time comes,
Up there on the bandstand we see Billy Swan
Everybody's clappin', Mum and Pop are dancin'
Sawdust is a flyin', at the Tom Greene county fair

Well a Sunday at the fair can make a memory more valuable than gold
Especially when you're ten years old

Time to go,
The pickup truck it rattles down the gravel road
And all of us kids sit backwards, lookin' thru the dustcloud
At the lights and the laughter at the Tom Greene county fair

well step right up and see the three eyed malarkey brothers
smoking one big round cigar fresh from Havana,
see the one legged chicken do the footrace with a sack of....

Thank you for posting this. It is my favourite Roger Miller song. I'm standing here with tears welling up from the happy family memories that this song evokes.

Roger Miller had a rare optimism that you do not get in most people, always seemed happy! Burton Trent

I live in Tom Green County. Roger Miller wrote the song the year he headlined at the fair & rodeo here.  This song brings back all the memories of being a kid and going to the fair every year.

Writer is TOM GREEN COUNTY FAIR
    Dennis Linde

My bad...Thanks for clearing that up. I certainly want to give credit where due. I should have just stated that the song was written about the fair & rodeo where I live. I just associate the song with Roger Miller so completely, I didn't think to look to see who the actual writer was. Dennis Linde certainly captured all the feelings and emotions that take me right back to when I was just a kid going to the fair. Part of that too is the way Roger performed it. I'm not sure too many artists could take a song like this and make it as special as he did. I miss Roger Miller.

Does anyone know where to get a copy of the LP, Tom Green County Fair?   I bought one in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1971 and swapped it.  Regretted it ever since.

As a native Texan, it's nice to hear someone lauding something good about the  Lone Star state. Lately most of the stories seem to be how bad the state is.

    C.... N....

@Chris Nemec Really? Apart from Rick Perry and JR Ewing, I hear nothing but good things about Texas.

    C.... N....

Really? What about the McKinney police officer that shot an unarmed black man?

    C.... N....

We don't hear about those things in Australia. Got to love a free press.

You've done it again: You made another musical day for me when I saw this seldom heard Roger Miller song turn up on my subscriptions page. Hadn't heard it for the longest time, but I've never forgotten the fade out..."see the three-eyed Mullarkey brothers...the one-legged chicken." Thank you for bringing it to YouTube.
