Midnight Oil - Shipyards Of New Zealand Lyrics

Thought one day I'd make my fortune
Like the ancient cavalcades
From the shipyards of New Zealand
Chasing history I left home
Moving west into the sunset
Became the sunset of our lives
I was factory made and settled
Safe from storm and broken earth

There's so much to do every day
Dreams keep on disappearing
We cling to the walls of our heart
Keeps us from coming undone

Now danger lurks behind the spreader
And Charlton Heston casts the first stone
User interference birthmarks
Clever, not very wise

Let the lamplights keep on shining now
While those searchlights in skies they are turning
We climb to the top of the heap
I wish I could fly

I can't get lost
I can't get confused
Something's misplaced
Maybe for good

Red Sails was banned in the USA when it was released . Thankful we can buy it now . So much is same no change. Powerful album great for playing while watching TV news with the sound off

The loops in the second half of the track are well before their time.

    e.... ....

"Well before their time as we be in and chime

There is a bootleg of this titled "Cliché - Shaves from New Zealand" It's great check it out.

Sorry but that was horrendous IMHO. Cheesy lite EDM beats don't suit the mood of the music or Peter Garrett's vocals at all. I bet they didn't get permission from Midnight Oil to use that sample either. They basically just took the entire song, pitched it up, and slapped an awful, utterly generic beat on it.

Senator Sir Garrett and the Rotten Frog Shits. Jeez. This track really signalled the end of their era. Great work lay ahead in Oils lore, but wasn;t it?

After going to Japan to record this album, the band members all agreed it was the most difficult one to produce and create. Out of trouble and strife to complete this came greatness that has never truly been recognized, since none of their greatest of hits came from this album.

Those lyrics are not what he's saying man...he' saying:

    I can't get lost
    I can't get confused
    Something's misplaced
    Maybe for good

Like somebody facing a mirror trying over and over to convince themselves that they didn't just waste their lives. That they didn't just fall into the same trap their parents and friends had.

Powerful material the likes of which we don't see much anymore. Introspection on a level that most people never want to face.

    @Conflict Magazine,
    Hear! HEAR!! :)

This album was so damn apocalyptic. Still as powerful and dark as the day it came out.

    What a fucking great album.

I think you mean "there are no hard feelings between us..." or something like that. "No love lost between such n such" means that they hate each other, hence "no love lost" because there is no love in the first place. Therefore when 2 brothers who have that sibling rivalry thing always fight you say "there's no love lost between them" meaning, they do not love each other, therefore when they fight they do not suddenly start hating each other because they always have.

I love the obscure references to HG Wells and Charlton Heston on this album. Very esoteric

awww... How nice it is for the oils to sing a song for us kiwis. See, there is no love lost between us and the aussies.
