Changing direction as a band or singer can sometimes turn out well, look at Bowie he did it time after time successfully, Bob Dylan dumped his folk music fans and turned into a rock act. Me personally I can see why Midnight Oil dumped there original fans, but going down the "Save the environment" route didn't improve their music, it lost its power.
