Midler, Bette - Storybook Children Lyrics

Daybreak.
How can I ever leave this place beside you?
You were the only one I ever cried to.
The night is through.

Now it's heartache.
I got to get home before he sees it's daybreak.
Light from the sky is shining through the curtain lace.
I never really meant to stay.

And now it's daybreak.
We were just sitting and talking.
Oh, who would have thought we'd be spending the night
dreading the light of daybreak?

How can I leave this place beside you?
How can I leave you, baby, leave you?
I don't want to go.

And now it's daybreak.
We were like storybook children.
Hey, but, like all good fairytales, this one must end.
Here is the end. It's daybreak.

How can I ever leave this place beside you?
You were the only one I ever cried to.
The night is through.

Lord knows it's daybreak.
And it feels like heartbreak.
I don't want to leave you,
I don't want to leave you, I need you!
Looks like it's daybreak,
but it feels like it's heartache.
I don't want to leave you,
don't make me leave you, I need you!
Daybreak.
Sunlight shining through the lace.
I need you.
Sun is smiling on your face.
I need you.
Don't make me leave you!
Lord! . . .

Anybody know what that weird sounding banjo-like instrument is that plays softly in the background? You first hear it at the 9 second mark.

Can remember filling my car up with gas and as I started the car to leave this song I'd heard before was just coming on as I drove away listening to this wonderful song.Had no clue who it was that sang it but really wanted to known who this woman with this amazing voice was.It was the summer of 1977, or 78. Took over 3 years to discover the song bird that had held my attention waiting until she was finally revealed. The Devine Ms M. I had discovered this very rare song bird and by then so had the rest of the world. Thank You So Very Much For Sharing Your Talent With Us Bette Midler. You've given me and many others something special memories that will last until our last days.

Nice version, but I like Cheryl Lynn's much better, a bit more intense. This should have been a bigger hit, though.

I like Bette but have to admit I love Cheryl Lynn's version much better!!

Google 'Bette Midler Songs For The New Depression + buy cd' - - and you'll have your choice of venues. 'Used' on Amazon is always in "like new" condition, and much more thrifty.

I remember in 1977 calling up my then-local radio station in Erie, Pa. to ask the dopey DJs to play this song because I believed that she was one of the best belters ever. I got them to play it once and then they told me to stop calling. Two years later she hit the big time again with “The Rose” and my adoration was completely justified. I left Erie a long time ago but not Bette.

    @bidlakbks
Yes...there is not a Bette song that I do not like. I Love them all...and yes...many people think her career started with The Rose...and that is a shame.

This song isn't included as one of her "greatest hits" which could easily be a 2 CD
set. Hey..Daddy , do you like "You're Movin' Out Today", "My Mother's Eyes" and
    "Married Men".
I've heard of people walking out on her concerts because they expect every song to be like "From a Distance" or "The Rose"....they don't know how she got started
    do they?

  16. G.... A....

Love this song! One of the best on the album.
