Midler, Bette - Lullaby In Blue Lyrics

I know that I'm no saint.
My head is in the clouds.
They called you a mistake,
but I still, I still say your name out loud.

They called me a stupid girl,
just like my mom.
Too many men passed through my arms.
At seventeen I looked into your eyes,
knew I could never comfort your cries.
Every April still reminds me of you.
The child I never knew.
My lullaby in blue.

It all goes by so fast.
How lovely you must be.
Why you've reached the age at last
that I was when your daddy lived with me.

How I wish we could meet somewhere,
talk it through.
There is so much I would say to you.
There are others, I'm not alone.
A younger brother you've never known,
and a baby girl who so reminds me of you.
The child I never knew.
My lullaby in blue.

As the years go by,
try not to think of us sadly.
Believe it if you can,
I wanna see you so badly.
On your birthday, Mama's thinking of you.
The child I never knew.
My lullaby in blue.
My lullaby in blue.
My lullaby . . .

I lost a baby in April when I was 22. I never got to know him.. this song touches my heart.

  2. L.... ....

Oh, I was expecting lyrics... must of read that wrong. ...

This beautiful "poem" is rendered with enormous tenderness, regret, sadness (well, verging on sentimentality, but short of) by Ms. Midler, and I never could really grasp whether the song is about abortion or giving the child away. I now believe it is the latter...As an abandoned child myself, it took me DECADES to find compassion for my mother, yet I am sincere when I say that the song has helped me humanize the woman who abandoned me (a slightly different story, since "from a distance" she was always "present" in my life, while here the Mother longs to re-connect with the child she gave away.....yet Bette offers us the window (well, she and the words) towards an understanding that ultimately, in so many of these cases the woman is nothing but an innocent......

I first heard this song about 20 years ago. It was after I became a birth mom and placed my son for adoption. This song, I listen to every year on that childs birthday. Thank you for posting this.

How curious that you would decide to reveal a "FACT" simply and no more.....WHAT FOR?!..... You listen to it every year....we will assume that, as Bette sings, you listen to it with enormous regret...I am sorry if I intrude----I am an abandoned child.....

What would have been my half sister, born in April, died at age 2 in car accident. Mom survived, husband and daughter passed. Re married, had another girl. I was the mistake. Sad, but true. My mom still regrets having me as I was born with fetal alcohol syndrome. She still abuses me. Forgive her for she's sick.

No one is a mistake, if wanted and loved.

My sister had a baby girl a year out of high school in 1970.  She was swept away to family in New England until Lia was born.  Her seven brothers in Florida were never supposed to know.  She was born March 20, 1971 and put up for adoption through Catholic Charities in Boston, Ma.  I long  for her everyday. She will always be a branch in our family tree.

and so my eyes , they overflow...let it rain , let it pour , let it go...for I know this , yes I know ...it is grace ....  Phil K.

Perhaps her finest song and performance in the last twenty years. Sublime.

  13. G.... P....

This song was written by Adam Cohen...Leonard Cohen's son! One of his first songs he wrote when he was just 22!

  14. J.... M....

I love this song..... It's a very touching song........ It makes sense to me because my father is not in the picture and never was... he doesn't know me at all..... LOVE U BETTE

  15. M.... R....

One of her best in a long time.

  16. J.... M....

One of her very best songs. With so many songs, you have to hear them a few times until you really "get it". Not with her. She gets you so emotionally involved on that first listen, with songs like this one. I also love "To Comfort You", "Millworker", and "Hello in There" from her. She has a way with ballads. Doesn't have to overpower them to get the emotion across.

  17. g.... ....

"The child I never knew"...lord, the emotions.

  18. N.... H....

This was Bette's favorite song from the album, Bathhouse Betty

  19. s.... ....

    beautiful..wowww ty

  20. M.... M....

She sang this lovely song on the David Letterman Show, but still, i got no radio play. Maybe the theme of teenage pregnancy was too REAL for pop radio.
Another gem from this album is "Boxing," a surprisingly tender ballad presented to Bette by the young piano-rocker Ben Folds.

this song still can get me crying..my cousin had to give up her daughter when she was 17..to this day she wonders where she is and what she looks and sounds like..she never wanted to give her up

  26. L.... J....

This is one of my favorite songs ever.....reminds me of my older sister who died as a baby before I was ever born, but I still miss her and hope to meet her one day somehow....My mom cries every time she hears it. We love you Kimberly...we will all be together someday. <3

  27. A.... ....

I love this song. The first time I heard it, I was at a Heritage camp for Korean Adoptees, and I was 16. I was adopted at 19 months from South Korea. My birth mom took care of me for the first 18 months of my life, and then couldn't do it anymore. Every song in this lyric reminds me of her...I was born in April.... I've never met her. But I'd like to... Just to tell her I'm ok..that I'm happy, and that I forgive her for making the hardest sacrifice in order to give me a better life.
