Midler, Bette - Am I Blue Lyrics

I'm just a woman, a lonely woman,
waiting on the weary shore.
I'm just a woman who's only human,
one you should feel sorry for.

Well, I woke up this morning a long about dawn.
Without a warning I found that he was gone.
Why did he do it? How could he do it?
He'd never done it before.

Am I blue. Am I blue.
Ain't these tears in these eyes tellin' you?
Oh, am I blue? Well, I bet you would be, too,
if each plan with your man done fell through.

There was a time I was his only one.
but now I'm the sad and lonely one.

Was I gay 'til today?
But now that man is gone,
he's gone and we are through.
Am I blue.

There was a time I was his only one.
But now, a, now, now, now, I'm the sad and lonely one.
Oh god, I'm lonely.

But I remember, oh, I remember when I was gay.
That was up until today,
'cause now that man is gone, he's gone and we are through.
Am I, am I, well, would you believe it if I told you I'm blue?

This is one of my all time favourites.

Oh Bette you are better than sad songs but you are amazing for sad songs. I love and have loved you forever.

  7. M.... A....

I learned of this song from the Justice League animated series when Batman sang it for Circe. I've heard each version on youtube, from the original Ethel Waters to Willie Nelson, Billie Holiday, Cher, and even Diane Lane in 'The Cotton Club', and I have to say that Bette Midler is my favorite. The slow Jazz piano just compliments here vocal rang so well, but most importantly, her emotional content. Damn! You just know she accessed some real emotion when she sang this. I never thought I would like a Bette Midler song. Life is full of surprises.

    Dick Hyman, piano.

  9. o.... s....

    She's too breathy.....

  10. C.... B....

When I would play her version of "Drinking Again", she'd confess at the parties she hosted, I remember her telling me how she never had an instance of being 'sick'. Plainly years later, she instructed me of her realm of sophisticated elegance. One must eat 'toast' and a lot of them maybe with gravy. ;-)

  11. C.... B....

I think that she sang this song so much more movingly than any other!

  12. m.... ....

Those first 2 albums are incredible. Barry knew how to bring out her best and Joel dorn. Wish Ellen greene's album from the same time would be released. She couldn't sing like this ever again.

l have adored Bette's début LP, "The Divine Miss M." since l purchased it at 21 -- and now, 44 years later, and in only two days, Bette set a record for ticket sales --
$9 million -- for her up coming Broadway production of "Hello, Dolly."

  14. T.... N....

All my Best to your Cousin in harm's way in Afghanistan. I hope and pray that all is well for him, and for you and the rest of his Family. Better Days ahead for all of you. Nemo

  15. B.... ....

She sang this when she was just 26 yrs. old on her debut album. This alone is enough to buy the Divine Miss M, but there's so much more. A classic.

  16. R.... M....

Ah.... Ms. Bette - sounds like you got the feeling down here... but can't imagine any guy you'd let get clse to you... sure'n he'd never "get gone..."   Nice piece piece of work, Gor;!  XOXOXOXO

  17. d.... r....

    `I` love you Bett.

  18. t.... l....

Cant get much bluer than that....

  19. G.... M....

Thanks, Scout, for reminding me of the divine Miss M. One of my first albums. Used to blast Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy sometimes to get the troops up and go find some good times.

  20. V.... G....

Greg, I totally agree about those two songs. When I was a teenager, I bought "The Divine Miss M" for "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy", but, when I'm walkin' down the street, drunk and sad, I'm singing THIS.

    V.... G....

Good for you Vince ! That would lessen a lot of our Male -Female problems that are going on now. I do the exact same thing(except I don't drink), but that is neither here nor there. Listening to some good "BLUES" seems to make you feel better when you sober up( i used to drink,so I do know where you're coming from ! GOOD MAN !!

  21. B.... B....

  27. V.... ....

@greg40258 I just read your comment and saw your remark on "Hello In There." I found the song posted by BerlinDirk2, listened to it and this line jumped out at me, "we lost Davie in the Korean war, I still don't know what for, don't matter anymore". I've been searching for this song after a friend told me that he lost his uncle in the Korean war, I wanted to hear it again, but couldn't remember it's title or who sang it....a delightful surprise!

  28. C.... S....

years ago when my and partner and I were first together, he walked into the garage where I was doing a project and saw me crying. I had a programmed the cd player for certain songs, This was one and so was Hello In There. He asked me what was wrong. I answered "just listening to music". I still listen to the same songs, but these days I can get through with out crying. LOL
