Michael McDonald - That's Why Lyrics
Look back loneliness, you won't see me behind you
Hey now emptiness, no more leading the way
Go on desperateness, I don't need you beside me no more
Come on happiness, I can feel you gaining ground
Go on emptiness, I won't look behind me no more
I don't rule you out, I know you're there
But I'm on to you now
[Chorus:]
That's why, I won't be down very long
That's why, I'll be all right from now on
That's why, I get stronger everytime
That's why, I know this heart will survive
You know I believe all we really have is time
No use worrying, no use wondering why
'cause through it all, we're only here to laugh and cry
It's meant to be that failure only brings another way
Every heartache always has another day
Come on loneliness, I don't need to hide you no more
I don't rule you out, I know you're there
But I'm on to you now
[Chorus]

a little-known piece of trivia: Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins co-wrote What a Fool Believes together on the VERY FIRST DAY that they ever met each other... I'd be honored if some fans of Michael & Kenny would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of WHAT A FOOL BELIEVES and HEART TO HEART on my YT channel in tribute to the masters of late 70s/early 80s groove. Live acoustic with no digital editing. Thanks and peace.
Where is he now
Wish I had a nice guy like Mike to talk to and laugh with when we were young.....Amy is such a lucky lady...bless you Michael....and thank you for all the music...I like singing with you when I am in my little office area of my house...harmonizing....GRIN...bless you all...
I owned the album in 1982, the songs still resonate. Dr. Steve Gadd on Drums, along with the late great Jeff Porcaro, from my hometown

Hey now emptiness, no more leading the way
Go on desperateness, I don't need you beside me no more
Come on happiness, I can feel you gaining ground
Hey now foolishness, I might keep you around
Go on emptiness, I won't look behind me no more
I don't rule you out, I know you're there
But I'm on to you now
[Chorus:]
That's why, I won't be down very long
That's why, I'll be all right from now on
That's why, I get stronger everytime
That's why, I know this heart will survive
After you're gone
You know I believe all we really have is time
No use worrying, no use wondering why
'cause through it all, we're only here to laugh and cry
It's meant to be that failure only brings another way

Very strong similarity to PAGES' OCOE
Similar piano comps as Nielsen Pearson's If You Should Sail
Best snare drum backbeat placement in the history of drumming....right here in this song.
Porcaro...

Vincent Smith.. AHMEN BROTHER!
I think you spoke for a lot of us...
to kiev,odessa and kharkov.
It's sad in a way. This LP did not get overlooked, but in the 80's the mood of the country and much of the music business moved into something else. Reagan, the whole era was so different from what those of us who came of age in the 70's with McDonald in the soundtrack experienced. This lives, which is nice.
Well, I wasn't alive at the time, but it seems that the peak of the soft rock era only ended in 83' or 84'. This album was released on a good time yet to make enough success, before the hugely synthesized sounds of the mid 80s took over (which I also love it, but the "yacht rock" time of the late 70s-early 80s was simply amazing!)
well now it is 2018....and we have an absolute idiot in our white house...Trump..... at least Reagan had class and knew how to govern.....now we are held hostage by an administration (elected by the electoral college NOT THE VOTERS OF THIS COUNTRY) and we have to hope HOPE we will be somewhat out of that stranglhold when November 6, 2018 votes come in.....MY GOD AND GOODNESS....GET THAT MANIAC OUT OUR OUR WHITE HOUSE....AND ALL THE TRAITORS....
this was released in the autumn of '82, but it is really the culmination of the late 70s sound. As Walter said, what came afterward in '83 & onward was a totally different thing.
maraming salamat,, sir sergio
This entire album is a classic piece of work with powerful, clever and truthful lyrics. Thanks so much for sharing from one of the best albums Michael McDonald has ever produced...and he has truly put out quite a bit over the years. I just love his soulful vocals and unique style - all his own. This album takes me back to a great transitional year in my life in December 1982-April 1983. Much appreciated.
AMEN TO THAT !!!
HOPE is from God Amen...
Ummm no we are not. You are under the devil Humanism is a lie to hell.
No everyone should love this song. I'm not "religious" I have a relationship with God the Creator, and that's paramount for where one will spend eternity..I like my chances.
+TheSaleen786 Which 'god'? there are thousands!

Such an amazing track. My dad had this in his recordcollection and I was curious what type of music this was. Now I'm a fan.
