mewithoutYou - Tortoises All The Way Down Lyrics

Watchmen with their eyes closed, ransom and a scripture by the picture of your face
Messages the rhymes chose, blueprint for contrition in a cigarette case

Everybody knows, son
Everybody knows what you've done
Everybody knows, son
Everybody knows exactly what you've done

Charles was alive then, towering like a mountain at the silver trumpet blast
William still alive till when our altars are all emptied of his offerings to the last

Everybody knows, son
Everybody knows just what you've done
Everybody knows, son
And so again it goes you can't end what you've begun

Surely as the sun early on the east side comes
Before my sleepless eyes your features metamorphosize
Surely as the sun early on the east side comes
If only you had known how soon you'd be on your own
How suddenly they'd cast the stone

When the mouths of praise and blame start to sound the same
And you've asked they please not come back around
And yet they happen by, you can offer my reply:
"There's tortoises all the way down."

Since the night you came dressed up in your righteous name
All you claim to see doesn't mean a thing to me
Surely as the sun early on the east side comes
I know I'm not the only one

Whose blindfold-and-a-scale-ship refused to sail
And yet failed since each search for solid ground
You sing to me at night as the moving finger writes
On tortoises all the way down
You think that glass of wine could cancel half a line?
But it won't wash our words out this time
And I'm not the only one who's got nowhere to run

Cause everybody knows, son
Everybody knows just what you've done
Everybody knows, son
Everybody knows what you've done

While all hiding inside our painting-of-a-house-hung-up-inside- that same-painted-house-which-ever-implies-another-painted-house-inside lives
Serpent-in-the-sky-lives!
Servants-of-the-least-high!
Most-tortoiseless lives!
Would you meet me sometime soon, son, down by the riverside?
There's room enough in my paradise
My empty little mind

Heaviest gd ending I’ve ever heard

Flat earth reference(it’s turtles all the way down!). I think these guys know. Brother, sister album cover definitely alludes to ancient Christian/Hebrew cosmology(flat(fish) with a tower at the center(mt meru) with a local sun/moon(same size)).
Also the lyrics “the sun and the moon, are my fathers eyes.”, only makes sense once you discard heliocentric cosmology. It used to confuse the heck out of me, because we are told the sun is much bigger than the moon, so it painted a picture in my mind of a god with one large eye and one small, but that’s not correct lol :p
Peace to you all and god bless. May you find the truth if you seek it.

To be more clear, what you're saying is the equivalent of saying that "Catch for us the foxes" is a reference to running after foxes... No, while the phrase is, taken literally, about foxes, the meaning of the phrase is from a passage in Song of Solomon and is meant metaphorically. In this way, "Turtles all the way down" is a reference to a story in which one speaker believes in the World Turtle, but upon asked what is beneath THAT turtle, replies, "well, it's turtles all the way down!" So while "world turtle" pertains to mythical cosmogony, the phrase "turtles all the way down" is a reference to the story that illustrates the problem of infinite regression.

Sola712 are we here to change each other opinions on cosmology or to enjoy some good tunage!? I respect your opinion, and perspective. Sorry my connection to ancient cosmology flipped you out lol. These guys are obviously into a bit of mysticism so why would they overlook realm cosmology? 200 years ago nobody thought we were living on a spinning ball, now after all of nasas fake space bs everyone *knows* we live on a useless speck of dirt in an infinite nothingness. Obviously the creator isn’t necessary for such a creation of big bangs and accidental evolution. Why do you think there are so many atheist now a days? They’re monkeys living on a spinning ball. Life assumes no meaning at that point. From where I stand I feel that we are the center of the universe. Flat or not we could just as easily be geocentric, with a local sun and moon. Peace.

@C Vasilis I guess I commented in the first place because you were reading into things that weren't there. You misunderstood the quasi-titular line, "Tutles all the way down," to be about a flat-earth, when in actuality it's recalling a story that illustrates the seeming absurdity of infinite regression.

I see that you are a flat-earther, even though you initially said "not that that's what I believe." That explains why you initially saw a flat-earth reference where there was none.

I get your point about modern science leading more and more people to atheism... But just because the effect is to cause atheism to grow, doesn't mean the facts themselves are wrong.

    Sola712
“While all hiding inside our painting-of-a-house-hung-up-inside- that
    same-painted-house-which-ever-implies-another-painted-house-inside lives
    Serpent-in-the-sky-lives!
    Servants-of-the-least-high!”
Can be read with scientism in mind or classic cosmology. So we’re both right and we are both wrong. I’m not sure how into scripture you are but the four corners are mentioned multiple times. Why would a book written by the Holy Spirit make such an error?

    C.... V....

The "flat Earth" thing is meant to weed out the crazy and gullible people. The world isn't flat, thinking it is is a sign of mental illness. I really recommend you take a step back and look at how poisonous looking at the bible and thinking "this is all 100% literal and true" is. Because if you truly believe the fiction that is the bible, you'd be out stoning women and shit. You can't pick and choose.

Though since this song has infinite-regression themes, it's pretty funny to see religion on it, considering that's basically what religion is doing now. Regressing ever so slightly, constantly.

As someone that researches ancient cosmology this song hits me at the core.

Turtles/Tortoises represented toroidal fields and their shells display cymatic designs. Why do you think they said the earth rests on turtles and go all the way down?

Fractals, Fibonacci, pi, phi, golden ratio. The ancients knew and it seems mewithoutYou does too!

    Much love Aaron

kander I see you around, glad you’re listening to some awesome music, now if only they were tuned to 432hz ;p
    Peace and love

    M.... T....

    @dctcorey20 who is that?

    M.... T....

If only he had a compilation of just his outro music

  8. M.... B....

So beautifully dark... definitely my favorite off the album

  9. J.... J....

who the hell listen to this song?

    J.... J....

You should listen to Julia, Julia.

  10. U.... E....

This is my favorite song from this Album right now and maybe my favorite of all. The lyrics seem as if Aaron is talking directly to me. "I know I'm not the only one"

  11. C.... A....

"When the mouths of praise and blame start to sound the same". I get it, I truly get it. This song is beautiful.
