mewithoutYou - Bear's Vision Of St. Agnes Lyrics

Barren rocks and sand, Bear & Fox held hands,
held like a timber hitch, held candles to the sun
Both faint and fading fast, they walked on, windward
kept time with a pocketmouse, mouths kept mostly shut
Thought broke the silence like a bone

[FOX:]
[half-moaning] “you’ve worn me like an albatross,
I’ve only slowed you down.
You could’ve long traded in your braided crown by now
you could’ve found that Anabaptist girl you always used to go on about
As we rode in circles on our bicycles;

we walked on balance beams
the audience cheered for us
We burned like fevers under carriage hats
hid behind Venetian masks
In our human costumes
We stood like statues once in shepherd’s check
we’ll both be decked in herringbone,
wrapped border drab around already broken ironstone”

[BEAR:]
“But I’ve seen these cliffs before,
St. Agnes brought her palm branch to the hospital
looked upward lest the charm had fled
from my brother’s breathing bed
And when he died I shut his dogtooth violet eyes:
He looked just like me
climb on down and see
they laid him on the rocks below
there’ll be enough to fill your cup for days;
I’ll stay up here and rest.
[aside] We’ll fly in straight lines as from carronades
we’ll crash like tidal waves, decimate the islands
As our hollowed lumber falls like water, ends where I start
In that tattered rag shop back in Asbury Park

Look how soon my hands won’t move
but if you’ll improve, we’ll all improve
Sixty feet and my feet won’t move
but if you’ll improve, we’ll all improve
Forty feet, my legs won’t move
but as you improve, we all improve
Fill our den with acorn mast,
I’ll wake before the salmon pass
Ten foot more and nothing moves”

You've worn me like an albatross.
    I've only slowed you down.

  2. 3.... ....

If anyone doesn't understand, Fox and Bear are starving to death (Both faint and fading fast) and Bear throws himself from the top of the cliff so that Fox can eat him and continue on (he lies and says it's his brother's body "they laid him on the rocks below
there'll be enough to fill your cup for days;")

Yet it makes me cry....I think of losing my soul mate, How i was willing to give my very life for her, yet when I was down she walked away and also lost herself. The song is beautiful and I love it, Take nothing for granted my friends. God bless you all.

I love their sound, but I'm a simpleton when it comes to lyrics of substance. I wish my mind could interpret and be all complicated...

    T.... T....

The beauty of good songwriting (and good writing in general) is that it can be open-ended enough for the listener to draw their own conclusions on what the song means.

I guess what I'm trying to say is to not put too much weight on trying to decipher the songs, and focus more on how the lyrics relate to YOU and your experiences :D

Agree with Julian Boyd - I've listened to this track (and many other MWY songs) and depending on my current state of mind, the meaning changes.

This is when I realised the true power of MWY on my life.

anyone knows what are the chords in the beginning of the song (the trumpet part)? pleaseee

  5. L.... S....

Does anyone know what the deal is with the official, theatrical versions of Ten Stories' lyrics? They vary just slightly from the actual song lyrics. Are there recordings of those versions anywhere? Or more accurate lyrics?

  6. C.... ....

This makes me cry. It's so moving. I don't even understand it all, but the parts I relate to just make me feel small and it's so relatable.

  7. N.... M....

it reminds me a lot of the end of the film The Plague Dogs...

  8. J.... K....

Theres a lot of hidden lyrics from silencer in this song.

  9. m.... ....

    that would explain A LOT.

  10. R.... ....

Okay, I understand now, you're absolutely right. I went back and listened to "Fox's Dream of the Log Flume" and towards the end of the song it explains that Fox has a premonition of the events told in this song sort of. But that still leaves me wondering what kind of relationship Fox and Bear had. Where they lovers?

  11. R.... ....

;-; okay thank you. That's pretty dark and inspiring at the same time. I appreciate that!

  12. R.... ....

Can someone please explain this song? The Fox and the Bear escaped together headed towards Yellowstone.. that's all I understood from the first song. I understand that Fox and Bear were good friends but Bear lost me when he began to tell about his brother and the island. They died, right? But how, who, what, when and where? xD I need detaisl!!

Hey I'm constantly favoriting, liking, rating, and adding Indie music to my playlists so subscribe to me for Indie music!

Not exactly. The singer/lyricist has strong connections with Sufism/Islam, Baha'i Faith, Taoism, etc.

I wouldn't say anything as simple as "they are a Christian band" -- considering not all the members are Christians, and Aaron Weiss is a wonderfully complex individual, spiritually speaking.

  15. j.... ....

its a christain song mwithotyou i a cristain bnd

  16. R.... S....

if ANYONE can find the Buddhist source for this song/story, I beg of you...message or reply to me.

  17. J.... F....

    was this real ????
like the story of Mary the hung elephant ?

  18. M.... W....

Ending is so damn sad, but it's great, I wonder if the references to sixty, forty, ten feet are in reference to bear approaching the cliff to throw himself off, or how many feet before he hits the ground?

  19. R.... D....

Beautiful song. The story of the bear and fox is so well told, the ending can make you nearly tear up.

  20. d.... e....

This song has a pull on my heart no words can describe...

    d.... e....

Does it still bro because it pulls on mine

  21. m.... ....

    Masterful.
