Meters, The - Fire On The Bayou Lyrics

Fire on the bayou
Fire on the bayou

Down in New Orleans
In Lucky's din
He wouldn't deal y'all
For a fifth of Gin
One dude wanted
A bottle of wine
Hit that dude yes he did
For a dollar and a dime
That's why I say y'all
Light your

Fire on the bayou
Fire on the bayou
Oh hey light the fire
Fire on the bayou
Fire on the bayou

Take a little toke, huh
On your smoke
Buy yourself
A bottle of wine
Cool, cool wine y'all
Going down your throat
Don't try to tell me
Don't make you feel real fine
That's why I say y'all
Light your

Fire on the bayou
Hey light your fire
Fire on the bayou
Go do like you wanna
Fire on the bayou
Hey light your fire
Fire on the bayou
Do, do, do your thing

Fire on the bayou
Ooh Lord have mercy
Fire on the bayou
I got a nickel now
You got a dime
Let's get together y'all
Goin' have a good time
Goin' to buy a fifth
Goin' buy a joint
When you gettin' down now
You doin' things right
That's why I say

Fire on the bayou
Hey lil' mama now
Fire on the bayou
Hey light your fire
Fire on the bayou
Hey, on the bayou now
Fire on the bayou

Do it
Light your fire now
It's alright y'all
Feels so good, feels so good
On the sideline
Take your handkerchief
Take your handkerchief
And tell Leo now
Let the fool know what to do
C'mon lil' brother now
Oh do it like you wanna

    In 1976, I was 15.
One night, I went to see my very first concert : The Rolling Stones (not too bad, for a beginning).
The Meters were opening for them.
And so, this is the very first band I saw on stage.
What is funny ? I don't lsten too much to the Rolling Stones anymore, but I still do with the Meters.
    What a groove, man...

    r.... g....

    @Talkin Bout Nawlins True !

    r.... g....

@ralph gull I think thats cool you got to see that. The Stones were huge fans of NOLA music but def a dumb idea having those guys as the opening act. .Nobody can follow any of them Neville boys.Same thing happened with zz top and Albert King and Grand Funk Railroad and Freddie King....bad idea lol

    r.... g....

@Talkin Bout Nawlins Amazing band, indeed. What is interesting when you analyze their music is that each part is VERY simple and what's incredible, the beat is not straight at all.

    r.... g....

@ralph gull Very true.Lots of music folks and its mostly the school taught ones cant wrap their head around playing behind the beat. They think its just sloppy playing.lol We caught the Masters of Funk with Leo and Purdie at the Joy Theater then the next night The Funky Meters at Tipitinas during Halloween a couple of years ago. Both those bands are killin it.Like you said, very simple but tasty as hell.I talked to George Porter Jr during their break, he said he had been on the road with Paul Simon.

    r.... g....

@Talkin Bout Nawlins Yes, it's a matter of taste, as you say. For instance, in another genre, here it's amazingly simple, but with very good taste : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceNvbYZ2p8o

This Is true funk. Not pop funk, rock funk. THIS IS THE FUNK. THE REAL DEAL

    J.... D....

Yes it is. I hope you get my response. For me this is the most natural funkiest tun ever recorded. I exclude the Neville Bros Version which is OK but not Funky and crackling with spirit and sin together like this .

13 idiots are braindead morons.Cmon,Leo now!

    T.... R....

It's unfortunately far more than 13 in this sad world... but then you meet (musically) some good men like The Meters and anyone influenced by them (RHCP before they lost their fire) - and the world seems less lonely!

Graham Wiles They are nominated this year!.....about time!

    G.... W....

They are celebrated in nola at least... KINGS

  41. P.... H....

Now I see where Steve Miller got the "Fly like an eagle " riff.

    P.... H....

@Talkin Bout Nawlins When somebody drops "fanboy" into convo I'm out🙄🙃

    P.... H....

@Trucker Kev The Paid Tourist Somebody called me a Kinky Friedman "fanboy".I thought it meant I knew a lot about Kinky. I had no idea that was bad lol I guess I need to get on the internet more.Meant no disrepect.

    P.... H....

@Talkin Bout Nawlins no Fanboys just basically people who are obsessed with a certain artist that they live and breathe everything revolves around anytime you ask them a question that's all the way answer is always yes and they reference something about them.. a beatlemaniac is pretty much another example of what a fanboy would be or fangirl it's just a beatlemaniacs have their own kind of name like a deadhead.. personally I don't like the term when I don't know somebody. the only thing I was commenting about with Steve was the fact that how he recycles his riffs more than once. and I cited examples of the tunes where you can definitely hear him taking his own riff and reusing it again.
especially the Fly Like an Eagle roof if one does pull up my Dark hour featuring pay unaccredited Paul McCartney using the name Paul Ramon in 1969 you will clearly hear the Fly Like an Eagle riff like I'll be damned lol..
but his question explained exactly what I answered and cited..he said this is where Steve Miller got the Fly Like an Eagle Riff! Nope this song from The meters dropped in 73/74 Fly Like an Eagle came out 76.. but like I told him and apparently nobody bothered to listen: look up my Dark hour 1969 Steve and Paul McCartney awesome heavy fuzz guitar and there is the Fly Like an Eagle riff that will make you just laugh

    P.... H....

@Trucker Kev The Paid Tourist Whew Om glad to find out thats what that meant because I only have a man crush on Kinky. Not really lol I did know about the the stuff with Miller and Sir Paul. Its been so long but if I remember right the rumor was the Ramones used the name because of Paul.

    P.... H....

I doubt Steve Miller ever heard that song. That lick is a muscle memory noodling kind of riff that you come up with in standard tuning. Not a lot of options left, folks!

  42. S.... H....

URRRRRRGH! My face is screwed in the most grotesque manner. Dirty.

  43. A.... B....

I hate when people say nawlins

    A.... B....

you folks are really silly ..no one in New Orleans says nawlins ....I lived the city for half of my life ..SCOTTY H you must be from St Bernard parish you Yat ..it's NOLA.....

    A.... B....

    abarnes....yes thank you

    A.... B....

Of course I'm from St. Bernard, there's only one parish that's referred to as "da parish"

    A.... B....

    NOLA BABY !

  44. J.... S....

Whitney Houston, Cissy Houston doing backgrounds

    J.... S....

    J.... S....

I apologize it was on the Aaron Neville version that a young whitney and mom did the backing vocals

    J.... S....

@Jamaal Shelton  Neville's interesting, I'll have to listen to that.thx

  45. B.... Y....

Back in the day , Nawlins had a section of town called Fat City & the Funk was thick down yonder sha'...

  46. B.... D....

Best and Funkiest Version in terms of sound. .Let us acknowledge the Haitian Influence of New Orleans Music. http://wwno.org/post/haiti-new-orleans-feeling-mutual

  47. s.... ....

I have a sneaking suspicion Steve Miller lifted this riff for 'Fly like an Eagle'. They are identical. The Meters song 'Fire on the bayou', came out at least a year before Miller's song did.

    s.... ....

I've said it before but I'll say it again on your post no Steve Miller Fly Like an Eagle rif came straight from Steve Miller song!! check out 1969 my Dark Hour featuring Paul McCartney who called himself Paul Ramon listen very carefully the space cowboy has been known to recycle his wrists more than once and hell they are your own so why not steal from them lol.

  48. s.... ....

Leo is my favorite guitarist ever!

  49. M.... O....

Zigaboo Modeliste!! the best drummer ever.

    M.... O....

he should have done more than back up beat then, literally nothing special!!

    M.... O....

@Brandon Barnes Actually his sycopation is tight as fuck, he does change it up subtlety and does have a few fills. Probably easier to recognize if you actually played though.

Certainly not the greatest ever but still really fucking good!

  50. M.... B....

Thats cuz George is a badass

  51. P.... P....

    their best song

  52. P.... e....

    funk music = happiness

  53. b.... ....

Let me tell you working with LEO ,This guitar player on some gigs with ETTA JAMES Made the gigs that much funkier. LEO NOCENTELLI Is a wild and funny guy

  54. H.... ....

I wasted my whole goddamn life. This has pretty much made me believe that funk has a place, and its in the now. May the funk be with me from now on.

  55. T.... ....

George Porter is still doing the funk in the big easy.

  56. D.... B....

got the heart and soul one more performance at a new orleans festival would be amazing

  60. j.... l....

    bien parecido a hey pocket

  61. 5.... ....

That intro better than most whole songs out today.

  62. s.... ....

    Tighter than a dolphin's butt.

  63. O.... M....

Tighter than the G string on Chaka Khans butt.

  64. L.... ....

Danced to this on Bourbon during Mardi Gras last year :) Good feelings, man! Good feelings!

  65. n.... ....

@wtrad that's where the funkification starts

  66. z.... ....

@runsouth2PANIC yes george can play the hell out of that bass.

  67. r.... ....

@LJH70122 YEAH YOU RIGHT! Monday nights @ the Maple Leaf people. Pure Nola flavor. I used to live four blocks from Tip's. Best two years of my life. GPJ has a bday celebration every year @ Howlin Wolf. Fried chicken, birthday cake and pure funk are provided.

  68. r.... ....

George Porter Jr. brings the thunder and is still funkifying lives as the hardest working bass around. Funkify your life....

  69. R.... ....

    Great funky stuff!

  70. d.... ....

Man keep quit and enjoy the groove..you just can't sit motionless.
Just makes you wanne move and groove and get down

  71. l.... ....

@LJH70122 no doubt about that brother

  72. K.... Z....

@LJH70122 Halloween weekend? Sounds as though I had best start thinking about reserving a flight from San Diego to New Orleans!

  73. L.... H....

All you people who are wishing for this music to make a comeback should come to New Orleans , where it has never left. The Meters are playing Voodo Fest Halloween weekend and then there's the Neville Brothers , Ivan Neville's Dumpsta Phunk , and a bunch of other people not named Neville playing funk locally as well. Even our marching bands are funky. That's where the brass bands come from. We even have country funk bands like the Honey Island swamp band.

  74. L.... H....

@wtrad That's because George Porter , Jr. is the best bass player on the planet earth.

  75. C.... G....

The Meters make me want Gumbo...

  76. m.... ....

I turned the radio on and suddenly I heard a cheap trance electro mixed with pop singers...common make funk come back

  77. T.... ....

Soul Asylum's Dave Pirner said in an interview of few years ago on Minnesota Public Radio that when he first heard this song, he knew he had to get into making music... Twenty something years ago, he's won a Grammy and has moved to New Orleans and continues to jam.... I found out about these guy's from tht interview. Glad I tuned in, these guys rock!!!

    T.... ....

TheTissueguy that's funny, why did Dave Pirner choose to play rock, then? Probably because he couldn't groove.

  78. 1.... ....

@ThePoeticWhiz George Porter - funkiest bassist this side of Larry Graham

  79. C.... N....

This is some dirty ass shit

  80. 6.... ....

I would love to see this music make a come back and replace rap this stuff makes your soul feel so good your feet cant stay still !

  81. m.... ....

this is one of those songs you know how it goes and can hum the melody, but you don' t know any of the words so it haunts you till you finally figure it out.

  82. S.... ....

    Awesome track

  83. m.... ....

    funk 101

  84. G.... ....
