I had a dream where Metallica was playing on a bridge and they were playing this song in my dream the whole song played it was beautiful. James and Kirk were playing so soulfully. Then the clean part happened then I see Cliff stand up and nod his head and walks away. It was amazing.

This album always reminds me of listening to it on tape with my Walkman on the bus to high school.epic! In a time when early "Hip Hop" (rap) was fairly new.. many kids listened to that Not Metallica at all! This was always one of my favorite Metallica songs, from when I was listening to them as a teen in the 90's.
I always loved the bit that starts at 4:28 and goes to 6:44. That whole section sounds like it has so much emotion attached to it. I had no idea that it was about Cliff. RIP to him.

I was on a road to Copenhagen in 1991 and I started to tear up - for no apparent reason.

Later ... I realised that was the very road that took Cliff.

These days I hear the mellow part of 4:56 in my head - for no apparent reason.

The quiet moment at 04:56 is perhaps the most reflective, vulnerable, sad moment in all of thrash metal. It came upon me now and made me weep for all the things I've lost over these last 30 years...Born in 1984, this song for me represents a bridge to the old days, when metal was more emotionally complex, when America still thought she was OK.


The crescendo at 06:20 is so glorious, so pained, so raw; this is not the soul-dead gore music of Cannibal Corpse or the angry defiant music of Slayer; this is hero music, music that in the notes themselves seem to tell the story of the human triumph over darkness, of the great war between good and evil. I wouldn't mind dying while listening this very passage of music.


I can hear the Nazis rolling into Poland, and the old woman recalling the old days. I hear great human loss and history - war, pride, rage, migration, plagues, and all other manner of strife in this deeply meaningful music.
