I just realized that their songs really resemble DOOM 2016's OST. Both have this heavy industrial tone, which I very much enjoy.

Well, it has been some time since I first to something that caught on my attention so much.

it’s called polymetricism and meshuggah are uniquely famous for it

polymeter meaning literally more than one meter . so the drums play in 4/4 to establish a consistent beat and the guitars/bass play a repeating riff in a different meter (i think rational gaze is 15/16 off the top of my head but i’d have to check)

this has a few significant effects , let’s use a simpler polymeter to examine these in effects in closer detail . imagine i’m a guitarist and i’m playing a riff in 7/8 and to simplify it further imagine the “riff” is just meaning going up one fret per quarter note starting at the open string

so essentially my riff would be “0-1-2-3-4-5-6-0-1-2-3-4-5-6-0...” etc now that’s all well and good and if we had drums that were also playing in 7/8 the whoop de doo its a song in an unconventional meter who cares

but now look what happens when we superimpose a beat in 4/4 meter on top of it - standard 4/4 meter is composed of four beats with emphasis on the 1st & 3rd beats so “TAP-dun-tap-dun-TAP-dun-tap-dun...” etc . still with me on this ? good here’s the fun part

now let’s superimpose our 7/8 riff onto a 4/4 beat

TAP-dun-tap-dun
0-1-2-3-4-5-6-0

did you see it yet ? no ? okay well let’s look at the 7/8 riff again and this time i’ll put an exclamation point on each note if it fails on a strong beat in our 4/4 meter

now let’s extend it over x-amount of bars and watch what happens to the accents

0!-1-2-3-4!-5-6-0-1!-2-3-4-5!-6-0-1-2!-3-4-5-6!-0... etc

the riff hasn’t changed at all but since the 4/4 meter has such a dominating effect on our natural inclination toward standard rhythm the ACCENT on different elements of the riff changes as it loops over and over . this is what makes a lot of meshuggah riffs seem so “random” and “difficult to memorise” or whatever else

however we reach an impasse as after x-amount of bars in 4/4 meter the riff needs to “catch up” so that we can repeat the sequence all over again . this is done using a “buffer” motif to reset the whole cycle . taking our 7/8 example and extrapolating for a common factor with 4/4 the lowest common factor of both 7 AND 4 is 28 so at that point we will have our little “buffer” to complete the cycle (in our example this buffer will be four quarter notes long since 32 8th notes = four bars in 4/4)

every single meshuggah riff (save for a couple of very rare examples) follow this pattern and it is responsible for how seemingly inexplicably contagious and “easy to groove to” they seem to ‘somehow be’ while also being extremely complex
