Merle Haggard - What Happened? Lyrics

It used to be Andy and Barney Fife
Now it's Howard Stern and the brothel life
Too much crap can drive the world insane
Everybody's singing the jailhouse blues
Don't believe a word of the evening news

Truth that stood for years is down the drain
Trailer parks with a building code
Cul-de-sacs and the country road
High tech bars with bad karaoke sound
Uncle Sam gets your money spent
Pay your ties, can't pay your rent
Foreign cars selling big in American town

What happened, does anybody know?
What happened, where did America go?
Everything Walmart all the time
No more mom and pop, five and dime
What happened, where did America go?
Where did America go?

How did we ever go so wrong
Did we get too high, did we sleep too long
Why did we raise the price of gasoline
I remember the morning the towers fell
I fell back asleep and dreamed of hell
I guess I thought it was all part of my dream

What happened, does anybody know?
What happened, where did America go?
Everything Walmart all the time
No more mom and pop, five and dime
What happened, where did America go?
Where did America go?

Where'd it go boys?
Hey, hey, I'm gonna preach
I miss America

The Hag made country music country music

  2. Z.... C....

Referring to 'Pancho & Lefty' as 'Poncho Lefty' really bothered me.

  3. W.... L....

One of the best country singers of all times and now his sons are a lengend to follow. They are a copy of their dad so beautiful

  4. b.... d....

if we are here we dont need to understand what happened to merle , we just wanted to hear a good story

  5. b.... d....

had only one pop hit, who can guess what the song was?

  6. F.... G....

  7. D.... ....

  8. B.... ....

  9. a.... ....

My dear old dad loved this music . I was brought up listening to it every night as we sat in his little caravan on the old stone land that belonged to Shanks and Mcewan where he worked in the steelworks as a bulldozer driver . God knows how we got through those hard days but we did . I miss my dad . But I never let a day pass without listening to these old favourites. And dear old mother loved the music she would often play Jim Reeves songs and sit quietly crying . I keep their memories alive by playing their songs .

  10. R.... F....

  13. D.... F....

    Hag is the king!!!!

  14. n.... a....

Wow great tribute thanks for cheering me up😎

  15. W.... ....

My grandfather who later became Sheriff of Kern County had arrested Merle Haggard when he ran to Red Simpson’s house after the nightclub robbery.

Was fortunate to see Merle in hometown before he passed a half a decade ago

  16. M.... G....

Country trash. A boy named Merle. 😍

  17. J.... H....

6:33 Jude law and Benicio del toro? Or these gummies are awesome.

  18. J.... W....

Merle Haggard was a great man. He might be gone but he's not forgotten We Love You Mario or if you're at.

  19. R.... B....

It seems to me that David Allen Coe was the true outlaw. He spent 20 years of his life incarcerated, starting at age 9!

    R.... B....

Robert Brandywine he was also a member of the Outlaws MC

    R.... B....

    Johnny paycheck

    R.... B....

@David Ferrell Reading his bio on Wikipedia it sounds like he was pretty much a professional singer starting at age nine. His main brush with the law was shooting a guy in the head that he claimed was an act of self-defense. This was at age 47. Even his big hit "Take this Job and Shove it" was written by David Allan Coe.

    R.... B....

I love DAC, I love all his music and his life style but he’s one hell of a man.

  20. D.... P....

I knew a guitarist that played with Merle in the late 1980's and into the 1990's, Clint Strong...red caterpillars.

  21. I.... S....

Good riddance to a Dirt bag.

    I.... S....

Why was he a dirt bag.

  22. M.... F....

    When I die,
    Where ever I go
    Pay my tab
    Look around
    Hope to see
    My Farther
    Merle Haggard
    And Me

    AMEND,
    Michael House

  23. A.... D....

Wow didn’t know Merle had a Rat Terrier, our beloved Rattie of 16 years was put down on November 13th, 2019, it was horrible, stayed with him until the end, in both me and my wife’s arms! R I P Checkers! 😭😭😭😭

  24. A.... D....

My Father passed away when I was 10 years old, so, I can empathize with Merle, I know what it was like to lose your Father at a young age.

  25. A.... D....

Man does Merle resemble his Father!! Hag, a true Legend, me and a friend went to see his concert , Another True legend, Tammy Wynette opened for him, my friend went looking for Merle’s tour bus, and met him, had coffee with him, lucky bastard , I should have went with him, so I could meet the Hag, dammit!!!

  26. A.... D....

R I P Hag, poet of the common man, his doctor warned him not to go on tour, but he did. Hard to believe that he was incarcerated in San Quentin!

    A.... D....

I can’t believe a movie hasn’t been made about his life, the entire story is almost too good to be true. He was in San Quentin when Johnny Cash played, and his record was much more extensive than showed here.

  27. d.... b....

All of you who thumbs down this video can kiss my country ass! Merle was a legend before he died. A musical genius that most people could never comprehend. I knew and loved him my whole life. Thank you for posting

  28. E.... R....

"The warden led a prisoner, down the hallway to his doom, I stood up, to say goodbye like all the rest and I heard him tell the warden, just 'fore he reached my cell, let my guitar playing friend do my request..." Song is so beautifully sad it still pulls at my heartstrings no matter how many times I've hear it.

  29. T.... B....

    A life’s LEGEND 🌹👍🇦🇺

  30. K.... ....

In California Now - You Would NOT Even Be Arrested For What Merle Did - Let Alone Serve Any Time !

  31. t.... ....

    "Pancho Lefty" ............ seriously?

  32. F.... ....

I got to see Johnny Cash but I'm kicking myself in the rear for not going to see Merle Haggard 15 years ago. I said I'll catch him on the next concert, next thing I know he's dead. Merle played here locally. I messed up!

  33. A.... H....

I saw him in concert. Good show.

  34. G.... D....

Love me some Merle, God Bless you my friend,

  35. J.... A....

  37. F.... ....

I miss Merle, but I am glad he is not here to see what country music has become.

  38. L.... H....

He is up there with Johnny Cash and Hank Williams. They were the best.

  39. P.... 7....

Had privilege of seeing the man in concert a few times. Became a fan in 1967 and held him as my favorite country singer. Friend of mine had a bumper sticker of Merle for president and Willie for VP. We always laughed about it.

  40. 2.... C....

How can you go to negative 5 million dollars in the year 1980! ? Holy shit that must be one fukd up train ride to hell and back. 🤯 I have a true autographed picture of him from the 1990s to Coyotes in Louisville Kentucky.

  41. R.... M....

He was a handsome looking guy

  42. R.... M....

Merle Haggard should have went to Dr. Lederman no cutting, no bleeding, no chemotherapy he's the only doctor that does this in America! His Phone numbers is 212 Choices he is at 38th and Broadway in Manhattan! He treats cancer from head to toe anywhere in the body, from brain cancer to toe cancer with no surgery and no hospital! He is on WOR AM every night at midnight! He sees people from all over the world he's been doing this over 30 years! He treating my ex-girlfriend of throat cancer and got rid and he treated President Carter of brain cancer and got rid of it!

  43. C.... ....

Never forget me and My Dad listening to Merle Haggard on The "Country K" in South Florida growing up. My dad was just a good ole country boy at heart and loved that generation of Country Music singers. Looking back - they are true legends. Miss them and Miss My Dad especially today on Christmas Day 2019.

  44. R.... C....

In the 60s and 70s we kids used to make fun of my dad’s music, like Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Loretta, Patsy, Cline. We didn’t think it was “cool”. But secretly we liked it.

  45. p.... ....

Man I got extreme existential dread at the end of this.

  46. T.... W....

My dog would whop these pussy ass rappers

  47. A.... C....

Merle did not escape WITH Rabbit and was NOT captured soon after! Read his book that’s NOT what he says! He says he could have gone with him easily but Rabbit told him he shouldn’t because he could go somewhere with his talent and would eventually get out.... let’s get our Merle facts straight please!

  48. D.... F....

  62. f.... ....

Those singer songwriters will have their music reborn soon. We're currently going through a resurgence of Rock & Roll and in time it will backtrack to country. Merle's music will be rediscovered.

  63. W.... C....

Good video and biography only problem I have is that there Is over 200 people that dislike the video screw them.

  68. w.... ....

Has tickets to hear him in Jonesboro, Ark but he cancelled and died less than two weeks later. I'm mainly into Indie rock, but I'm a huge Merle Haggard fan, except for that Okie song.

  69. O.... L....

Pardon me while I get drunk because my wife left me because I am a drunk. They do not make them like this anymore.

  70. e.... ....

Haggard was known for celebrating failure. His songs were mostly about failure and always sounded like whining.

  71. J.... W....

    He got the old

  72. J.... K....

I don't always listen to country, but when I do Merle Haggard is bumped and my neighbors hear it too.

    Love 💖 voice 🙏🏾

  80. C.... N....

I find it odd that you talk about his wives but mention one word about his children. Why is that?

  81. D.... G....

I watched this preform in Beaumont Texas, and the place was packed..We ALL loved this man and he will be missed.. Texas

  82. R.... L....

    He’s feeding the earth worms.

    R.... L....

    And so shall you

  83. R.... W....

Left out a couple real country songs. But OK.

  84. P.... T....

Always loved country-western music (I got my reasons). I could die in peace, relax or simply go to sleep, listening to merle haggard, Charlie pride, Tammy wynette, hawshawk Hawkins, etc, wouldn't matter if they were singing one of their own songs, or a mother-goose nursery rhyme. Can't stand this crap coming out today, since the mid-80's. 'Young country'? Give me a break.

  85. e.... s....

He reminds me so much of Georgia Florida line, said no one ever

    e.... s....

  88. K.... ....

Branded Man and Sing Me Back Home, the two greatest prison songs of all time! Folsom Prison Blues by Johnny Cash and I'm The only Hell (Mama Ever Raised) by Johnny Paycheck are a close tie for third. Damn I miss ole Merle Haggard, like the George Jones song goes Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes? No one, Merle was one of a kind RIP.

  89. M.... P....

    Do Waylon Jennings

  90. J.... P....

    always my hero

  91. C.... G....

My grandpa is similar to Merle his family moved from Oklahoma to California during the dust bowl, homeless

  92. T.... H....

Interesting that when they touch upon the lost drinking-druug years they zoom in at 7:35 with a picture of Ohio's own Johnny Paycheck sitting with Merle. Paycheck was a true artist, and underrated. RIP Lefty.

  93. A.... P....

I remember Prince and Merle died about the same time. Rolling Stone and all the big publications just talked about how wonderful Prince was and never mentioned Merle, who had more talent in his little finger than Prince had in his whole body.

  94. C.... ....

I wonder what happen to Kenny Roger, I can't find from you video.

  95. M.... L....

I pray someday l can shake his hand and thank him for his music

  96. J.... B....

  98. n.... ....

The song Wishing All These Old Things Were New by Merle is right up there with Johnny Cash cover of Hurt

  99. E.... W....

Rest In Peace Mr. Merle Haggard.

  100. D.... W....

Much respect to this man and from what I hear from every bonfire I visit and friends who visit mine his songs will always be played and loved
