Merle Haggard - Turnin' Off A Memory Lyrics
[Spoken:]
Let me tell you about a song
That I wrote especially for my friends with drinkin' problems
Or maybe I should say my friends with problems enough to drink
Anyway it's just an old theme of a man sittin' in a barroom
It's called I'm Turnin' Off A Memory...
[Sang:]
You can find me in dim lighted barroom
If your coldness should ever turn warm
But the chances of you ever changing
Are as slim as your two loving arms.
So I'm turnin' off a mem'ry
As quickly as time will allow
And the wine seems to help me somehow.
If I'm lucky I'll some day forget you
When the wine finally takes full control
It's not much of a future to look to
But I can't stand this pain in my soul.
So I'm turnin' off a mem'ry
As quickly as time will allow
I'm turnin' off a mem'ry
And the wine seems to help me somehow.
And the wine seems to help me somehow...

I always listen to Merle when alone and down in the dumps or just want some music, I don't listen to know one else now. Just Merle, how I miss him.
Charlie Knight - My Mom's second husband went to school with Merle Haggard in Bakersfield. Never really knew him but he had remembered being around him. Sadly, my first step Dad had past away in 1999. My Mom and I along with my baby sister went to see Merle Haggard in concert in 1980 in Bakersfield next door to his old ranch by the Kern River. I was only 14 years old at the time. Then I've seen him again in 2000 in Tulare California with Marty Stewart and Connie Smith. So I had the opportunity to see Merle twice in my life. And both times he was good. Of course back in the 1980 concert, they had a Heck of a time trying to bring him out from after an opening act. He was so drunk, he finally came out, tipped his hat and walked back behind the stage. After a few minutes he did came back out and did a very good job with his songs. Never even knew he was drunk. But the second time I've seen him in 2000, I think he was better then. Rest in Peace Merle Haggard, you're in the arms of Jesus now. I'm glad you made it home.
I've been listening since the 70's.
Theresa G I've been listening since I was born. I grew up on it and man if Merel ain't the best country singer then idk who is
In my opinion Johnny Cash is.
He is a terrific country singer and was my husband's favorite singer, he will be so missed. I love this song by him. The Greatest.
I love Merle too but in my opinion Johnny Cash is the greatest.

RIP Hag!! I hate to say it, but I've been listening to your music for 5 decades! WHEW!
Me to enjoyed all of it.Love country music can relate so much to it.
Charlotte Dickson Bill Anderson from Lakeside, Az, here, not whispering Bill, Why would you say, I hate it, you have been blessed to be able to listen to the greatest country music of all times, Merle haggard, George Strait, Eddy Arnold, Jim Reeves, Ricky Van Shelton, Vince Gill, the list goes on. This new so call country stuff Nashville's trying to cram down our throats is GARBAGE. Wake up Nashville.
Bill Andersson sorry you misunderstand. I love rhis man and all of his music!! I was just thinking of my years! I'm 60 so so much of my life has been vested in music like his!
@Bill Andersson sorry, just saw this. I love and have loved Merle's music since I was 10! Hated (just an expression!) Calculating my years, lol
Rest in Peace big guy! You were part of the best concert I've ever seen you, Conway, and George Jones.... 3 amazing men under one roof. you were the very last, lord help us, with the music we are left with.
I was so very lucky enough to see that show. I called it a dream come true.
So right
Robin Michelle FUCKING GEORGE JONES IS AS FAR FROM AMAZING AS YOU CAN GET. THAT BITCH HAD NO TALENT AT ALL WHATSOEVER IN HIS ENTIRE CAREER. LOOKS LIKE CONWAY AND MERLE WERE THE ONLY TALENTED ONES THERE THAT NIGHT. JONES IS PATHETIC. MAY HE ROT COMFORTABLY IN HELL FOR THE REST OF ETERNITY. MAY CONWAY AND MERLE REST IN HEAVEN FOR THE REST OF ETERNITY
Robin Michelle ALSO YOU SICK BITCH WE DO NOT NEED ANYBODY'S HELP WITH THE COUNTRY GENRE OF TODAY BECAUSE THERE IS NOT A DAMN FUCKING THING WRONG WITH IT OTHER THAN CHRIS SHITPELTON RASCAL FLATS KEITH URBAN DAN AND SHAY FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE HUNTER HAYES AND JON PARTY. THOSE JOKES ARE JUST AS COUNTRY AS TALENTED MERLE TALENTED CONWAY AND SHITTY GEORGE JONES BUT THEY ARE ALSO EQUALLY AS SHTTY AND AS COUNTRY AS GEORGE JONES

I mean the BEST! Janelle in Houston
cant wait to see the Hag & Kristoferson 8/2/12 - peoria illinois!!
Who is the woman in the video? She has got to be one of the most beautiful women I have ever laid eyes on! (And I'm 58 yrs old.....I've seen a lot of women!)
ONE OF HAG'S GREATEST SONGS EVER, NICE VIDEO TOO!!
This first came out on an album called "Lemme Tell You 'Bout a Song." Not sure if this is the recording from that album, which was late '60s or early '70s. Buyers have to beware of re-recordings, more so with Haggard and Jones than anybody else I can name. John Anderson also comes to mind on this subject.
Cowboy up!
Nice job. I like this one.
