Merle Haggard - Seashores Of Old Mexico Lyrics

We left out of Tucson with no destination in mind
We were runnin' from trouble and the jail-term the Judge had in mind
And the border meant freedom, a new life and romance
And that's why we thought we should go
And start our life over on the seashores of old Mexico

Our first night in Juarez we lost all the money we had
One bad señorita made use of two innocent lads
But we must keep on runnin' it's too late to turn back
And we're wanted in Tucson we know
And things'll blow over on the seashores of old Mexico

Two Mexican farmers en route to a town I can't say
Let us ride on the back of a flatbed half-loaded with hay
Down through Durango, Colima, Almiera
Then in the Manzanillos
Where we slept in the sunshine on the seashores of old Mexico

After one long siesta we came wide awake in the night
We was startled by someone who shadowed the pale ole moonlight
Our new-found companion, one young señorita
Who offered a broken hello
To the gringo she found on the seashores of old Mexico

She spoke of Sonora and swore that she'd never return
For her Mexican husband she really had no great concern
But she loved the gringo, my red hair and lingo
And that's all that I needed to know
Yeah, we found what we needed on the seashores of old Mexico

It's ok. You're here now and there's no turning back once you've discovered The Mighty Merle Haggard

    L.... E....

The guy was a legend and under appreciated. I was fortunate enough to see him perform live once.

  27. T.... G....

Merle just rolls that voice on the table and then kinda slides it up and down the scale and then drops it off the end of the table. Just as smooth and easy as melted butter

  28. R.... R....

    Merle wrote this !!!!!!

  29. R.... W....

Best there ever was and ever will be.  Mighty Merle.  One of a kind.

    R.... W....

Roger Williams, good name BTW. I live in this neck of the woods. It is awesome, so to speak. Merle is a badass sumbitch.

  30. J.... N....

Written by him but better by Hank Snow..

    J.... N....

    You Mean George Straight

    J.... N....

NO, this song has been written by :

    The Seashores of Old Mexico
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaWriter(s)

    Tony Brown, George Strait
"The Seashores of Old Mexico" is a country music song written by Merle Haggard. It was recorded by Hank Snow in 1971, Freddy Weller in 1972, Haggard himself in 1974, and in 1987 Haggard and Willie Nelson recut the song as a duet. Snow's version was a Top Ten hit in Canada, peaking at #6 on the RPM Top Country Tracks charts.
George Strait recorded a version, released as the last single, from his 2005 album Somewhere Down in Texas. Strait's version peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in 2006.

So this song is better by Hank snow. the proof is that hank snow's version has been a top ten in Canada peaked at #6 ;)

  31. T.... B....

Should have known I love both versions

  32. F.... ....

The Greatest! Thanks for all those memories!

  33. J.... K....

Merle was the BEST! We will miss him, but his music will live on forever! He wrote and
sang some great songs! Janelle in Houston

    J.... K....

    Keep posting Janelle.

    J.... K....

Janelle Klintworth What a beautiful name!

  34. B.... ....

This song makes me cry, I do not know exactly why. Both this and George's equally.

Yet another reason to miss Merle.

    B.... ....

It makes you cry because it is art at the highest level. There will never ever be another Merle Haggard, best there ever was or ever will be.

    B.... ....

    @Roger Williams you're so right

  35. j.... ....

Merle should have received at least as much "news-play" for his contributions to music as Prince has....

    j.... ....

+jeepstaff I shared a few of his songs on my FB, Got 0 likes. I guess people my age (26) don't really appreciate good music.
Nowadays I spend most of my bedtimes kneeling, praying for God let us enjoy Willie Nelson a little longer.

  36. G.... C....

I called in again today and got drunk. You've always kept me good company, Merle. Fuck it huh? Maybe I'll end up in Mexico one day. Some spirits just gotta be free.

  37. C.... D....

Never knew he WROTE this!! Only knew of the George Strait video. Makes sense now that this would be a Merle song.. Love it.

    C.... D....

Sam hunt break in small town

    C.... D....

Charlotte Dickson he didn't write it. Hank Snow did.

    C.... D....

According to the interwebs Haggard wrote this song.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Seashores_of_Old_Mexico

    C.... D....

@Hello World. Hank Snow recorded it first but Merle wrote it and recorded it 3 years after Snow.

  39. E.... W....

I am 68 and have loved and played rock and country most of my life. I have lived through the death of my rock hero Buddy Holly, in days of youth and in the days I first picked up a guitar. The first day the music died. In my adult life, the 60s and my Army years, I loved and admired the Hagg and he gave me lots of musical inspiration. I was fortunate to have seen him perform live, two times. But today I am sad because I have witnessed another day in which the music died. There are lots of good country stars but no other, save ET, the Possum, Marty, and Conway, were on the same stage as the Hagg. All others are simply imitations of the 5 Kings.

    E.... W....

You left out Jim Reeves, lol. I saw Marty when I was 8, My brother and I grew up listening to Marty, Jim, and the other greats. I thank God my dad taught us what country living, hunting and fishing, hard work and good music was all about. I'll have to leave out ole Conway, however. He was more of a joke to us than anything else. My British grandmother called him Conway Shitty, lol. No offense, my friend. Different strokes and all that...:)

    E.... W....

Only one 👑 King and his name. Hank Williams

    E.... W....

    Gotta add Don Williams.

  40. W.... S....

I've always loved this tune. Has a little bit of Roger Miller in it.

    W.... S....

yep, the tempo and rhyming gringo and lingo, etc...

  41. m.... r....

good bye merle haggard . rest in peace

  42. S.... B....

I like this snd George's version equally

    S.... B....

Sterling Boy 99 - hag wrote it

  43. 0.... ....

As much as I love George, Merle's writing puts him another class.

    0.... ....

08shortstop the George Strait version is the first time I heard this, my dad said “that kinda sounds like a Merle Haggard song” then when the video was over I saw that Merle wrote it, until I just now searched I was unaware that Merle recorded it (though I suspected he had), and it is nothing short of awesome as expected.

    0.... ....

    08shortstop - that’s a fact

    0.... ....

A good ol californian inspires a Texan and many more that has to say something....

  44. L.... H....

Still diggin Mr. Haggard. The Seashores of Old Mexico is classic. Thank you Mr. H.

  45. D.... C....

Hank Snow did a very good rendition of this song and George Strait was very good with it too.

  46. G.... M....

up to now never knew Merle sang this, only George... love it. But also love that George stayed true... sign of respect, not shown now-a-days... god bless both great artists, both have my respect and gratitude for their influence on my life

    G.... M....

@Gord Merritt Merle is my favorite in so many ways... I can;t stand Strait... as far as this song, Hank Snow can't be beat!

    G.... M....

    Yea, he wrote it.

  47. C.... O....

Merle Haggard is the MAN and George Strait RULES. Bottom line, BOTH these men put the stamp on country music as we know it.
Just as some people say Enrique Caruso and Pavarotti were the two columns that propped up opera, then I must say Merle Haggard and George Strait are the two bookends of country music.
Each man has his unique style that resonates with country music fans. Merle started it in my book and then he passed the baton on to the man whom I consider to be the best darn country singer since, Mr. George Strait. To say George can't sing is at least to me waaay off. Not a day goes by before I head off to work that I don't start off with some Southern Gospel and A George Strait classic. I don't believe the man has recorded one bad song. Much RESPECT to both and George THANKS for keeping it country.

    C.... O....

    opinion... we all have one

    C.... O....

SHOWS WHAT YOU KNOW YOU THINK TODAYN SHITY MUSIC IS REMOTELY LIKE THE OLD THEY'ER IS A BEST

    C.... O....

Curtis Ostriker George Strait should not be compared with Merle Haggard in any way

    C.... O....

Hank Snow sang it back in the day. All great original versions.

    C.... O....

Ian Ross but you dumbass ,,, Merle wrote it !!!!!!!!!

  48. K.... M....

Sounds even better than the last time I heard it !! The guy is magic

  49. K.... M....

    Superb !!

  50. A.... ....

    lol bad memory there eyoung2289

  51. e.... ....

I did NOT know that this was a Hag song..wow GS did a good job, but Hag is the KING; Just when you think you know alot about music..BAM just coming across this!
Or I have a bad memory. lol

    e.... ....

LOL...you are not alone...I only knew this as a King George song...then I saw the Merle wrote it...Merle is the GOAT!!

    e.... ....

I'm a bit late to the party but this is actually a Hank Snow song

    e.... ....

Hank recorded it first but Merl wrote it

  52. D.... T....

Comparing the view counts and considering royalties, I bet Hag likes George's version!

    D.... T....

It's OK, but clearly a knockoff of Merle's original... even down to the "Ha-haa!" laugh that Merle probably threw into his recording because he felt it, but that 'King' George felt the need to copy to the microsecond. Nothing against George Strait, a very good singer who has had excellent taste in choosing his material, and has had a career to envy. But the video shows George missing the point of the song... you don't see or feel a working stiff on the  lam from the law, scuffling his way to Old Mexico the best he can, like Merle wrote it and sang it... what you see and  feel is a big rancher (or a 'king') on vacation... Merle's recording (and writing) is the Mona Lisa, George's is a shiny repro on a postcard. George has had more No. 1's, made more money, all true. He can't hold a candle, though, to Merle's songwriting, singing, musicianship.

    D.... T....

@Dyersburg Tennessee Actually Merle liked Hank's version! That's what he told me anyway!

  53. C.... M....

I knew this had to be a haggard song!

  54. R.... H....

Thank. You for the information Wade. I like the way Merl sings it the best.

  55. R.... H....

Hank snow was the first to sing it but who wrote it?

    R.... H....

i believe merle actually wrote it.

    R.... H....

@Wade Wilson @RT Hicks Merle wrote it in 1968 then Hank sang it then Merle and then George Strait and other people who have sung it

  56. D.... o....

Merle Haggard didn't originally record this song. The tune was actually first recorded by Hank Snow in 1971, while Merle didn't take a stab at it until 'His 30th Album' in '74.

    D.... o....

    Very true but...Haggard wrote it.

  57. H.... ....

This is a great song written by Merle Haggard. It was recorded by Hank Snow in 1971, Freddy Weller in 1972, then Merle himself in 1974, and in 1987 Merle and Willie Nelson recut the song as a duet. Love it.

  58. J.... K....

I did not know this was originally a haggard song

    J.... K....

Then you don't know much about country music

  59. J.... C....

    NUMERO UNO MERLE.

  60. J.... ....

I can't tell for sure, but here are the guitar players for this album-

Merle Haggard Presents His 30th Album - (Aug. 1974)

    Roy Nichols – guitar, harmonica
    James Burton – guitar
    Dave Kirby – guitar
    Ronnie Reno – guitar
Norman Hamlet – pedal steel guitar, dobro

James Burton, later of Elvis' backup band. Also Glen Hardin, a piano player, is credited on this album. He also played for Elvis.

  61. P.... ....

Does anyone know who is on rhythm guitar and does those nice licks starting around 1:30? I think it's Roy Nichols but I'm not sure.

  62. R.... T....

    The best

  63. P.... P....

Just love it when Merle ,sings the songs he wrote and lived ." IN MY OPINION MERLE ,IS THE BEST AND MOST TALENTED COUNTRY SINGER EVER.!"

  64. r.... L....

GEORGE STRAIT IS GREAT,, BUT MERLE HAGGARD IS THE ALL-TIME BEST----TOTAL PACKAGE---GEORGE DIDNT WRITE HIS SONGS----MERLE WROTE THIS ONE AS WELL----MERLE LIVED HIS SONGS---GEORGE JONES IS GREAT AS WELL

  65. P.... ....

Here is the real king of this music. Few, very few, belong even in the same breath with him: Willie, Tom T, Possum (though nowhere near him as musician/songwriter)......
Everything about this song is magic: the ballad-like story, the names of Mexican towns strung together like an incantation, the arrangement that weaves in those dreamlike strings, Merle's way of blending the innocent boy of memory and the knowing man doing the remembering. Thank you for this gem.

  66. R.... S....

What?? Did you say George Strait, the undisputed king of country music. Cant sing?? You've lost you mind. He can sing. If he couldn't sing he wouldn't be the king.nor be so popular for as long as he has been... he's just under the Beatles and Elvis in Number one hits.

    R.... S....

I agree George Strait is great artist. I've seen in concert many times. Always great.

  67. H.... ....

More awesomeness by the Hag. Wonderful.

  68. O.... ....

    Well written ballad.

  69. g.... g....

This is the best version, followed by the willie/merle one. Now we all should bow our head's and pray for the one lost soul who hit the dislike button, surely something is wrong with his/her life.

  70. D.... B....

I prefer George's version (Of course, George is my favorite). But this version is outstanding

  71. G.... H....

it would be wonderful to hear "the girl who made me laugh made me cry"

  72. H.... ....

@oldecountry You might be surprised at how many Merle songs are out there that were made hits by other artists.

  73. G.... H....

Please post the rest of the songs in this album! The songs here are what i consider the nuggets of Merle's songs.

  74. e.... ....

love Merle and George both,,,but I do prefer George's version.

  75. S.... ....

@Bamaboompa It wouldn't be intersting to hear Kenny to put a spin on anything, especially a song from someone like Merle, who is so far superior to him.

  76. m.... ....

Of the three listings for this song, merle's is the best.

  77. B.... ....

Even when George covered it in 87(?), both versions have that "country pop" sound when country was moving to the mainstream. As a c/w dj at the time, it's not a criticism, just a statement of fact. I wouldn't mind hearing it as more c/w less pop with "strangs" instead of strings.
It would be interesting to hear K Chesney put a spin on it.

  78. G.... H....

@oldecountry Thanks a bunch for posting this song! Please post the rest in the album I missed 'em all. Thanks again.

  79. b.... ....

@bigwhiskers hey big dipshit, stay off Haggard vids cuz you are a nonentity, I flipped over to your pathetic page.....a barbara streisand video? Just one. Trim the whiskers out yer ears fool

  80. j.... ....

@bigwhiskers strait does not even sing most of the time. he just talks his way through a song...they call it a strait talk.

  81. S.... ....

Merle Haggard's version of 'The Seashores of Old Mexico' (from Hag's 'Merle Haggard Presents His 30th Album' - released Aug 1974) was recorded July 16 1969. Roy Nichols & James Burton played guitar on it & also Jerry Reed added in...The next day Hag recorded 'Okie From Muskogee' (all 3 guitarists were also on 'Okie' )..Freddy Weller recorded "The Seashores..." early 1971 for his Apr 1971 album 'The Promised Land'. Hank Snow recorded "The Seashores..." July 1971 and released it in Sept 1971..srj

  82. K.... M....

@bigwhiskers-What do you mean by merles voice being weak? I like both merle and george so i cant really understand what the hell you're talking about.

  83. j.... ....

@johnrunion the record company pulls the strings on strait. merle is the best singer in country music history. strait can not compare. most songs now he just talks his way through it. they call it 'strait talk.'

  84. j.... ....

merle is the man! merle is the real deal. george strait is pre-fabricated. merle writes much/most of his own material. strait just calls in dean dillon, etc. usually. also, remember dean dillon attempted a career as a singer first. during that phase dillon was called the next merle haggard. dillon's recording career did not work out. next stop a hit writing song writer for others. merle haggard is a true musical visionary. the hag does things his way.

    j.... ....

    You're so right

  85. W.... ....

I remember hearing my Dad play this album when I was no more than four years old. I cut my teeth on his Merle Haggard records......love him to this day.

  86. R.... M....

I had this on 8 track when I was a kid. Great stuff!

  87. M.... O....

Thought this was a new song. George is the man but Merle can tell it like he lived it.

  88. g.... ....

Great version . . . I've been looking for this for a long time . . . I agree it sounds better then with Willie, George Straight's take on it is good, but it's Merle's song after all . . .

  89. c.... ....

Best version ever , the Hagg was really something back then and still is in my book
