Merle Haggard - No Time To Cry Lyrics
My father died a year ago today
The rooster started crowing when they carried Dad away
There beside my mother in the living room I stood
With my brothers and my sisters knowing Dad was gone for good
Well, I stayed around just long enough to lay him in the ground
Because I'm older now, I ain't got no time to cry
I've got no time to look back, I've got no time to see
The pieces of my heart that have been ripped away from me
And when the feeling starts to coming, I've learned to stop 'em fast
'Cause I don't know if I let 'em go they might not want to pass
And there's just so many people trying to get me on the phone
And there's bills to pay and songs to play and a house to make a home
And I'm older now, I ain't got no time to cry
So many things have changed so much here in my world
I remember sitting on the front yard when an ambulance went by
And just listening to those sirens I would break down and cry
But now I'm walking, I'm talking, doing just what I'm supposed to do
Working overtime to make sure I don't come unglued
'Cause I'm older now, I ain't got no time to cry
I go lay down on the sofa and I watch the evening news
There's a half a dozen tragedies from which to pick and choose
The baby that was missing was found in a ditch today
And there's bombs a'flying and people dying not so far away
I'll take a beer from the 'frigerator and go sit out in the yard
And with a cold one in my hand I'm gonna bite down and swallow hard
'Cause I'm older now, I ain't got no time to cry
It's true, I guess I'm older now, I just ain't got no time to cry
No time to cry
No time to cry
No time to cry

Another of his Best
It's a woman's lament. The songwriter Iris DeMent sang it much better.
Merle Haggard was a busy homemaker?
Want to hear and see something special? Clinton Gregory sitting on a bed with just his guitar singing this https://youtu.be/CA8JtAdl4yY
Where is our gone
im in his position
Iris is such a fine song writer!
Nice song
Made my eyes leak.
I love you Merle
Everything I own comes from dead people my fishing poles to my work ethic and my view on life. A ww2 Normandy beach landing vet and a Vietnam war marine taught me to be a man and never cry but this song breaks me and I have to cry everytime I hear it.
renots 365, You sound just like my late husband. He also landed on Normandy Beach, but never would talk about it, My son a Nam vet, drafted on his 18th. bd., came home a different kid, still would never talk about it. He lost his last kidney last year due to cancer. Oh these damn wars.
We all have our own way of grieving. I didn't cry either, should have. It's not good to hold it in.
Lord have mercy what a legend!!!! He will truly never be gone!!
I love you Mr Haggard!!!

And now Merle is gone. RIP one of a kind !!!
good friend Abe Manuel jr produced and enginered this song in merles studio in redding Calif.
he did a good job
I remember going to a Merle show & hearing this song for the first time..Back in the late 80's early 90's..it was really something to see live..No Time To Cry - 1996
I've been on the hunt for this song for years!! I couldn't remember the name of it, or who sung it, or any lyrics. I just knew how I felt when I heard it... now i have a lump in my throat and a pulling in my chest... my dad introduced this song to me as a kid... and now my daddy has passed on... I'm older now, with no time to cry R.I.P. Daddy
@Rachal Cuomo Iris Dement wrote this song. I always have a hard time getting thru this tune as I get chocked up with emotions. "I take a beer ought of the refrigerator and go sit out in the yard and with a cold one in my hand, I'm gonna bite down and swallow hard" ...pure genius!
+Burt French Iris Dement is a staggering talent, I'd put her up there with Willie Nelson for that humanity/melody synthesis that warms the heart. I'll tell you: if I'm feeling a bit dry eyed I listen to a little Iris...
I'm sorry for your loss.
In my opinion, this is one of his very best. Curb Record label execs were pushing Merle out the door and did not even promote or market this album. In fact, I am not so sure the album ever charted (the only one he created that didn't). But, this single.... This single was a diamond in the rough. I was working as a PD and MD at a progressive hot country station at the time (circa 1996) and I came across this song and played the hell out of it, even when my contemp's weren't. Now, out of that business and some 19 or so years later I am so glad I finally found the tune again, as it means a lot to me personally and others will fall in love with it (I'm confident) if they themselves get a chance to listen to this gem! Ironically, in 2001 I was the Opps Director at a radio cluster in NorCal living just down the street from Merle and I ran into him one morning as he was exiting our station and I was entering. I was able to shake his hand, as I told him that he was indeed the greatest of them all. Merle was doing a segment on our right-winged talk show (am station) and he was a bit "lit-up" from the heated debates and such and gave a quick exit with not much banter. But, he came back later in the day and sought me out and sat down to thank me for shaking his hand and for giving him a compliment. He noticed that I was just 30 and that this was not his core audience, so I think he appreciated the fan and felt it was right to come back and make good. The fact is, I never felt he was rude or aloof with me. I regard(ed) him as an Elvis figure and these figures are the types of people/stars that I assumed WOULD be a bit quiet and aloof. But, years later I would come to realize that Merle was the type of guy who could bitch at problems with society, politicians or issues and then stay "real" with those comments. He was certainly pissed at Curb Records for not publicizing his work; upset that hot country stations weren't playing his music, et al, but here I was... a 30 year old that loved his new stuff, bought his albums and supported him. So, he came back... to thank me. For this, I will always be thankful to him. He taught me a lesson with just one encounter; wonder how many great lessons others have been given by the hand of The Poet of the Common Man.
really cool story David. Thanks.
I first heard the Hagg back in 69 in a nice place called CU- CHI Vietnam. I've watched him come of age just like all of us. I'm older now and have no time to cry...
