You know Merle had one of the biggest train sets I 've ever seen

The thought that inspired me to write this next song may seem premature the title simply being no more trains to ride because if you really want to go to enough trouble you can still hop a freight across the country but there's different penalties and trespassing laws that will discourage most any young man from choosing this method of travel much over hitchhiking given the title No More trains to ride

I wasn't one of those young men who was discouraged to ride the freight trains, and started doing so about the time this album was released or shortly after. I did hitchhike in all 50 states, but I rode the rails in just shy of 40. I sang many a Haggard song with the clanging of boxcars, gondolas, cattle cars, grain cars, and an occasional empty caboose for accompaniment. Sadly, this song has more meaning today than it did when he wrote the song and true freedom is becoming a thing of the past.
