Merle Haggard - I Threw Away The Rose Lyrics

Once I lived the life of wine and roses
And I drank a lot back then for one concern
Success for me lay just around the corner
I thought my social friends would help me make the turn

But now I'm paying for the days of wine and roses
A victim of the drunken life I chose
Now all my social friends look down their noses
'Cause I kept the wine and threw away the rose

I stood by and watched the bottle take control of me
The turn I made was not the one I'd planned
And I watched my social standings slip away from me
While I watched the bottle slowly take command

And now I'm paying for the days of wine and roses
A victim of the drunken life I chose
Now all my social friends look down their noses
'Cause I kept the wine and threw away the rose
'Cause I kept the wine and threw away the rose

I love this song. It reminds me of my father. He kept the wine and threw away the rose throughout my childhood. When I listen to this song I can recall locking my drunk father outside on Christmas Eve and watching him rambling words I was too young to understand.

  32. r.... p....

I don't know, but could that be Roy Nichols taking a cue from Don Rich, and playing his Telecaster through a Leslie cab?

  33. H.... L....

there will be gifted singers come along as they always have but there will never be another Merle Haggard or George Jones they lived it and wrote and sung and felt it and made you feel it cause most of us are facing battles and troubles daily and can relate it's amazing the smoothness and just pure greatness in his voice n yet so humble. his son Ben is a very good upcoming singer he will be a good star in his own rite but he's not his dad and as he shouldn't be he's got his own talent gene passed down and using it nicely best to all the Haggard kids for their futures

    H.... L....

I agree with you the brothers are good but they'll never be a Merle Haggard

  34. J.... K....

GREAT SONG! Merle was the BEST country artist of all time! Still listen to his music! Janelle in Houston

  35. V.... M....

I listen to Merle every day and I love this song. I miss just knowing he's not on this earth. I hope he rests in peace. I also miss Bonnie Owens and I listen to her everyday also. I have listened to them for years and never get tired of their music. I hope she rests in peace also.

    V.... M....

I wish I could have been Bonnie Owens and then with Merle his whole life I love both of them

  38. a.... l....

Good song! R.I.P. You will be missed very much. Had a lot of great music! 🌹😥

  39. Y.... T....

One of my favorite songs by Merle. Especially this version.

  40. w.... J....

I used to listen to this when I was young. My dad had this LP. We couldn't get TV very good, it was black and white, and there were only 3 channels anyway, not counting PBS which I still do not watch. Music has always been bigger than TV. We listened to the Louisiana Hayride and Grand Ole Opry Sat nights on the radio. No FM only AM, but the signals came form long distances then, especially at night. Merle, George, Lefty, and Porter Wagner plus Tammy, Loretta, and Patsy kept us singing. They still do.

  41. r.... p....

This song seems to be the one that's the hardest to find on any of the numerous Merle Haggard compilation albums, i.e. Merle's greatest hits, the best of Merle, etc.

    r.... p....

You're right, I looked far and wide for a copy of this song on CD, and none of the compilations seem to contain it. And, I think it's one of his best, go figure.

    r.... p....

Do you use Amazon? If so, search "Merle Haggard - Branded Man." They have a compilation album from 2003 on cd for 5 dollars. If you want the actual album though, there is a 2-in-1 "I'm A Lonesome Fugitive/Branded Man" cd for 25 (used- in "very good" condition) or 15 for a digital download.

  42. F.... G....

    Great song with Merle Haggard

  43. R.... H....

when I was a teenager I used to play these songs on an 8-track tape player.

    R.... H....

Ronnie Hodges I still listen to Merle on 8 tracks in my 1979 Trans Am.

  44. R.... H....

is this from the record or the cd?

  45. N.... G....

I found this song when I was looking for songs about roses and found more Merle country songs that made me a fan of him.
