Merle Haggard - Green, Green Grass Of Home Lyrics

The old hometown looks the same as I step down from the train
And there to meet me is my mama and papa
Down the lane I look and there runs Mary hair of gold and lips like cherries
It's good to touch the green, green grass of home.

The old house is still standing though the paint is cracked and dry
There's the old oak tree that I used to play on
Down the lane I walk with my sweet Mary hair of gold and lips like cherries
It's so good to touch the green, green grass of home.

Yes they'll all come to meet me arms a reached smiling sweetly
It's so good to touch the green, green grass of home.

Then I awake and look around me at the four grey walls that surround me
And I realized that I was only dreaming
For there's a guard and there's that sad old padre
Arm in arm we'll walk at daybreak
And again I'll touch the green, green grass of home.

Yes, they'll all come to see me in the shade of that old oak tree
As they lay me neath the green, green grass of home...

You tube sucks. It's got to many ads,,it cuts off videos that your watching while your watching them and then if that ain't bad enough they want you to pay more money a month to get rid of all that crap. They claim that they have to run ads because that's what pays to keep the app going. WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP...every time you pay your phone bill , your paying to keep the app going. Come on you tube , quit trying to RIP people off and lieing to them. WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP!!!!!

  31. S.... ....

@Sherry Lipscomb Porter's version was great, still this is a Curly Putnam song. They played this version at my Pa's burial service, never seen so many grown men cry.

  32. A.... B....

Yes, Merle has passed through the proverbial veil, but he is still very much with us too! He had been given a marvelous gift, and his spirit will live on through his family, friends, music and fans! It might be that some unknown kid will discover the treasures of Haggard 10-25-50-100-years from now to learn from Merle's legacy. We were blessed to have him as long as we did. I have introduced Merle and his music to many people that claimed they didn't like Country Music, they recanted their claim and have been won over through "Mighty Merle's" musical treasures and his legacy. Yes, we were saddened by his passing, but you need to remember, that Merle lives on through his music! Adios, mi compadre!

  33. f.... s....

I think the first time i heard Merle sing was in the 80s but I'm nearly 81 years old and my memory isn't what it use to be. But when I heard that voice I thought that's the best voice I've ever heard. And kids, I go back to when Roy Akuff was the head honcho on the opry. And I never heard a better voice! The only thing close to him was Tompall Glaser and the Glaser bros. You Are missed Merle Haggard!!! RIP

    Harrry Martinez

  66. J.... B....

Well, way better than Presley or Jones. Go with the original.

    J.... B....

It's not actually the original though.......Not saying that in a bad way or anything but just pointing it out.

    J.... B....

Porter Wagoner was first! Love em both

    J.... B....

Sherry Lipscomb No, Kris Kristofferson wrote the song and sang it first.

    J.... B....

Definitely not a Kristofferson song; it was written by Curly Putman. But who really cares whose is the "best" version (whatever that could even mean)? Just appreciate greatness and timelessness.

    J.... B....

Adam Young I don't even know how my comment ended up on this video. This comment was for a video of why me, Lord.

  67. M.... M....

    Very good diction.

    M.... M....

Thank you for lightening this up a little. Between Merle''s recent passing and this truly sad song, I was ready to cry.

  68. T.... S....

    nice selection Donny boonman

  69. E.... M....

I love. All the country music

  70. N.... K....

    Precioso.

  71. K.... M....

This version is the Dog Bollocks !!

    K.... M....

@Keith Meyers Keith shut up and fuck up :) don't listen and kickoff from this song if you don't like :) that make sense ? :P

    K.... M....

@TheGlenmanusskinhead I think you misunderstood my comments where I come from to say something is the Dogs Bollocks means it is the greatest

    K.... M....

    @Keith Meyers ok now i get you :p ... thats cool .......

    K.... M....

Very funny for a Brit to read this exchange ! As humour goes, not far from the dog's b*llocks ! But, yes, I think it would be impossible for any singer to equal. It's as if he lives it as he sings it.

As he does with When my Blue Moon Turns to Gold, which is essentially less profound; though rather different, when you have a personal experience it resonates with, as he sings everything as if he means it, effortlessly.

    K.... M....

With his own experience of  San Quentin, no wonder it's 'a bit special'.

  72. R.... H....

Best version of Curly Putnam's song i heard

    R.... H....

    What about Tom Jonse's version

  73. m.... ....

Brings a tear to my old eyes!!

  74. H.... ....

I think every singer did this song in the 70's...yet I never got sick of it..Elvis, Tom Jones & Merle's versions are my favorites

  75. D.... M....

Merle is also a perty good picker, too.

  76. d.... e....

this is a pretty song sang by merle

  77. L.... L....

very nice voice. perfect for this song.

  78. M.... ....

Sorry I never saw him live.

  79. S.... T....

Absolutely Brilliant cover! Superb!! Please have a listen to own cover version. Thank you, Steve.

  80. R.... ....

    nice picture at the end

  81. B.... ....

my young cousin walked around singing this and then hung himself...pay attention to children...sometimes they're trying to send you a message. i wasn't old enough to remember him but know a child who's hope is almost gone...so sad

  82. b.... w....

precious, I feel priviledged to be alive and here this, and, soon enough all of us will be under thet tree

  83. m.... m....

@FungusMossGnosis too bad, "they" didn't cancel that outrageous and criminal war... what the fuck were we fighting for... we lost, and life goes on except for those hundreds of thousands that were slaughtered, scared and maimed in yet another monumental expression of human stupidity... bless Joan (who sings it much better, btw,) and her 'peacenik' hubby!

  84. k.... g....

Merle my hero has mesmerized me since I was an 8 yr old girl. Reminds me of my Dad! Love the soul touching, heart wrenching music. Love the man. Thank you Merle for being in my life!

  85. Z.... D....

    @MrBigfan007

    Porter was '65.
Baez had the '69 version. That was on her "David's Album" lp, all songs she dedicated to her war-resisting hubby, who was sent to prison for his peacenik mouth. She tells that on her Smother's Brothers appearance in 1969, before they were cancelled for their peacenik mouths.

  86. n.... ....

That is a drinking song.. cry in your beer stuff.

  87. M.... ....

@kirk379 Quite right. Not too sentimental, not too dramatic, done just the right way.

  88. Z.... K....

what a great, powerful song. thankyou Merle
