Mercury, Freddie - Goin' Back Lyrics

Going back
think I'm going back
To the things I learnt so well in my youth
I think I'm returning to
Those days when I was young enough to know the truth
Now there are no games
To only pass the time
No more colouring books
No Christmas bells to chime
But thinking young and growing older is no sin
And I can't play the game of life to win
I can recall a time
When I wasn't ashamed to reach out to a friend
And now I think I've got
A lot more than just my toys to lend
Now there's more to do
Than watch my sailboat glide
And every day can be
My magic carpet ride
And I can play hide and seek with my fears
And live my days instead of counting my years
Then everyone debates
The true reality
I'd rather see the world
The way it used to be
A little bit of freedom's all we lack
So catch me if you can
I'm going back

I’m going back to heaven when my life is all over as it’s a promise of God’s love for me and his Son who died unselfishly for all. This song hits me a different way.

  13. f.... ....

    Freddie you are simply amazing.

  14. M.... ....

Does no one here know this is a song by the Byrds from the 60's? Done beautifully but original is beautiful too.

  20. M.... P....

    I love this song..

  21. I.... J....

this song gives me the feels. i'm still a teenager, but it makes me feel like an adult thinking back about my life. something about the melody makes me feel very nostalgic. it's a good feeling. i love this song. so simple, so pretty.

  22. A.... C....

    oh beautiful 😍😍😍😍😍

  23. K.... Q....

어떻게 사람 목소리가 이렇게 아름답지 진짜 천사인가 보다...

  24. W.... V....

I love all the songs ... but this one is my favorite!

  25. A.... P....

    💛👑🎶🎶

  26. D.... F....

Such a beautiful song by Dusty Springfield originally but Freddie makes it so much better of course with his angelic voice. Mother Love of course and yourself when life was simpler...takes you back.

  27. B.... A....

    Beautiful song and voice. <3

  28. K.... ....

He was a god that he had an Alias named Larry Lurex that's so badass I hate being born in the 90s

  29. S.... V....

    Is this a beatles?

  30. D.... S....

I heard the original Dusty version of this yesterday, so looked it up on here and stumbled on this version. The passion and emotion in Freddie's voice gives the lyrics their true sound. There are very few songs that touch me on a personal level, but this reduced me to tears. We have but one life, do what makes you happy and don't waste a day. If only Freddie knew at the time.

    D.... S....

Same. I prefer Freddie's version to Dusty's as Freddie's expression of the song gives it more layers. Dusty's is good but filled with sadness only, a bit one dimension.

  31. G.... G....

    Freddie 😘

  32. N.... A....

Such a lovely song and a beautiful voice. This has moved me to tears. Probably because I 've only just discovered it via Instagram. Dear Freddie, I love you and miss you more than words can say

  33. A.... ....

  34. K.... D....

I love his cover of this song.

  35. M.... ....

Freddie`s voice here is so young and pure, and the lyrics are so good, thanks to Carol King who made this song :)

  36. A.... N....

The Larry Lurex EP was ridiculously underrated. The cover version of Beach Boys' "I Can Hear Music" was excellent. But his version of Carole King's "Going Back" steals the show.

    A.... N....

Could you share how many songs are contained in that EP?

  37. D.... D....

    Wow. Mother Love.

  38. A.... M....

Dusty's version of "Goin' Back" was recorded on June 15, 1966 at Philips Studios, Stanhope Place, London, with musical accompaniment by Peter Knight and production by Johnny Franz. It was released as a single on July 1, 1966, reaching number 10 in the UK Singles Chart, but was not released as a single in the U.S.

  39. c.... a....

I cannot put in words how much this man has impacted my life! As always I LOVE and MISS you more than you can ever imagine! RIP Freddy you will always be the best! And truly "my love"

  40. N.... ....

This is the best cover of this song. But how can you go wrong with Freddie?? Easily the GOAT!

  41. f.... 9....

If u listen carefully to the lyrics. This song is about India and zanzibar. Mostly about India where he talks about his youth. And the sail boat to zanzibar, on which he used to sail more often for 12 years.

    f.... 9....

This song wasn't written by Freddie.

  42. D.... ....

Is that what freddie called himself?

    D.... ....

This was when Queen was taking advantage of free studio time to test and "break in" new recording equipment, the catch was it was late at night during off hours. But the guys still often rubbed elbows with other big names and the band agreed to do this song but did not want to do a cover under the band name Queen, so Freddie picked this name as a light nod to Gary Glitter, which he did not react kindly to. But there was no malice intended.

  43. A.... H....

He sounds like a kid in this how was this 1973

  44. f.... 9....

I can tell that this song is about India and his young days during his youth in India where he was educated and learnt piano.

  45. F.... ....

    what year is this song?

  46. K.... Q....

    Very Sad...😢😢😢

  47. R.... ....

I swear I was born in the wrong decade. Instead of 2004 I wish I was born in 1964 so I would've been a teen when Freddie and Queen were in their prime ☹️

  48. T.... C....

    So cute

  49. I.... C....

Mother love is clearly inspired by this song.. Mother love was really the end of everything... First and last 😭

  50. I.... C....

What an idea Brian had to make Queen s first song with their last..

  51. I.... C....

Even though this song was the very beginning of everything it fits well with his last song, Mother love... makes me cry 😭

  52. I.... C....

Over the years ending with Mother love...

  53. I.... C....

First song he ever recorded omg 😭😭😭😭😭😭

  54. M.... V....

    Su voz es única!

  55. D.... D....

    1972....
    2019...!!!

  56. L.... D....

I hope these “new songs” keep rolling out. Freddy is still here for us that relish the memory and youthful world he represented. This has been a magical year so far starting with his movie release......

  57. J.... ....

    Goin' Back
    I Can Hear Music
    Time
    In My Defense
    The Great Pretender

*He can make the greatest songs better*

  58. c.... X....

    Ok. Im crying.

  59. J.... T....

I love this version of Goin' back

  60. D.... D....

Когда в 1995 году вышел Made in Heaven... Я даже не подозревал, что в финале Mother Love будет вставка этой прекрасной песни... Я даже не знал о ее существовании. Потом долгие и долгие поиски...

    I Effing LOVE you Mr.Mercury.🎤

    FREDDIE 💞🎶👨🏻

*Goin' Back:* I'm think I'm going back to things I learned so well in my youth ..

*Mother Love:* I think I'm going back to the things I learned so well in my youth ..

  63. T.... S....

I love this recording so much. His voice is still raw and unrefined and there's a sort of innocence to it. Makes it somehow one of my favorite vocals of his. <3

  64. M.... Y....

I used to listen to mother love wondering what is the song in the end...and....am i the only one who got a.sad feeling when listened to it....freedie the young man with a cute voice....oh god....i wanna cry

  65. M.... A....

Jestem fanem zespołu od 30 lat tylko ten kto został nim teraz albo pod wpływem filmu może twierdzić że to kontynuacja jakiegokolwiek utworu jestem z czasów gdy info o zespole się zdobywalo

  66. C.... C....

...I can't play the game of life to win... :"(

  67. N.... W....

    Gerry goffin made a masterpiece

  68. M.... W....

Holy shit. That’s where the bit in mother love came from... nope I’m totally not crying right now.

  69. N.... ....

So so beautiful. Makes me cry to hear his voice

@william bulsara, "Going Back" was originally written and released by Dusty Springfield as you correctly say, in the '60's.

Freddie recorded this in 1973 along with Brian, Roger & John, as the B-side to "I Can Hear Music" (originally a Beach Boys hit from 1969), which was performed by Freddie, Brian & Roger! This single was released by EMI under the pseudonym of "Larry Lurex". I can remember hearing it on Radio Luxemburg - the pirate radio station and remember thinking what a great voice "Larry" had!!

Both these tracks (and 6 others) are available on a CD I discovered at a car boot(!) by Milestone Records: released 1995.ref: CD/MS 1001, also features "Mad the Swine", written by Freddie, Brian & Roger in 1973 which became the remixed B-side of "Headlong" years later!

This CD was released under the title of "Queen in Nuce" - odd title! It was distributed by: Fonac Srl - via Remigia9/13 40058 S. LAZZARO DI SAVENA (Bo) ( sounds Italian?)

On the CD back cover, under Milestone Records, is the name Cosmic Communications Phone & Fax: + 39 376 438058/Fax: 39 45 8012683

5 of the tracks are written by Brian & Tim Staffell!

Hope all this info helps all you Queen fans out there, track this cd down.

Final note: " I Can Hear Music" is a FAB version of a great song!

    Happy Hunting!

NB: Just played this CD on my PC - and the May/Staffel tracks come up with the artist as Smile! Wow!! Never noticed that before!

Freddie's name wasn't on this song. He used a pseudonym (fake artist's name/stage name) Larry Lurex .

  73. N.... D....

I love this song! It reminds me of Millworker by Bette Midler. Is it just me?

  81. K.... D....

    He sang like an angel...
    Now he is one...

  82. B.... ....

One of the best songs written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin. There are also excellent versions by Dusty Springfield and The Byrds.

  83. C.... T....

Compare this to Mother Love, his last vocal recording. Crazy how much his voice changed.

  84. D.... A....

The meaning and time period for this song is what is gut wrenching! I can't listen to it without it feeling like my heart has stopped.

  90. J.... P....

Nice version from the early years. It's an homage to Dusty Springfield who Freddy Mercury cherished. Listen to Dusty's version which is the definitive one.

  91. S.... J....

Damn, I just realised that Young Freddie's voice sounds like Louis Tomlinson's

  92. G.... G....
