Men Without Hats - Sideways Lyrics

Step inside, the reason why
We look together then we find
Come inside, the world's a ball
We rise above it as we fall

Everybody's open air, so love me
Love me, love me where?
A million things and one to fly
Say life's a witch and then you smile

Took a trip inside your heart
Has seen much better days
Before we hit the high
Here's to you, sideways

The moon is warm, the river's high
And love, forever never dies
Check inside yourself and see
That life is what you want to be

Took a trip inside your heart
Has seen much better days
And before we hit the right one
Here's to you sideways

Here's lookin' at you sideways
Sideways, dreamin' of you sideways, sideways

Had a dream where everybody
Looked like someone else
The farthest I could get from
Was the closest to myself

Tonight I'll dream tomorrow's
Going to be that better day
And in the morning, I'll remember you
Sideways, sideways

Sideways, here's lookin' at you sideways
Sideways, I'm dreaming of you sideways
Gonna give it to you sideways

Men Without Hats Sideways Comments
  1. s.... ....

Sad that they felt like they needed to ditch the synths once the 90s rolled around.

  2. J.... T....

    Mucshsysmvslcsys1991sysyeashsysyahsys

  3. s.... ....

Prefer them with synths, no doubt.

  4. t.... ....

    A perfect song.

  5. j.... ....

I had to special order this as an import to the USA. Looked it up in a paper catalog. Love love love this album.

  6. b.... j....

But, he does have a HAT.

    b.... j....

I was just thinking about his hat and how my entire life is a lie.

However, if he is the only one with a hat, the band name is still valid as it is men with out hats not man without hat. lol

  7. A.... M....

I was shocked when this record came out. What happened to the MWH I knew? Quickly grew to like it, and still do decades later. Great melody, and Ivan's magnificent voice.

  8. D.... ....

If they had released this after nevermind broke the barrier they probably would've had a longer career

    D.... ....

They did have a long carreer. First EP was in 1980 and there last album was released in 2012 (36 years apart). That being "Love in the Age of War". One of their best in my opinion.

  9. d.... h....

got to see them when this came out.little bar called Kiplings in london .HAD ATHE CHANCE TO SIT AND TALK WITH THEM AFTER.great show and Great guys

  10. P.... F....

    Love this song!

  11. A.... D....

This must have been when Ivan Doroschuk started messing with people, considering he is in fact wearing a hat.

    A.... D....

I figured the hats were to hide hair loss.

  12. J.... Q....

Never understood why this album wasn't a monster. In the Meadow, Sideways, Nadine, rock on. I have subsequently read that the dickheads at the record label wanted more mindless pop like Safety Dance, which was cute, but not something to revisit forever. Too bad. I still play this one regularly since I bought it way the Hell back when it was released.

    J.... Q....

Probably because the singing sucks so.bad?

  13. Y.... R....

I love Nirvana sooo much, but what a fucking rip off

  14. d.... ....

Sounds more like She hates me/ Puddle of Mud than Teen Spirit

    d.... ....

Which was really similar to Suicidal Tendencies "I Saw Your Mommy." Youtube it.

    d.... ....

    @seasofluck yep its almost identical.

  15. D.... C....

Guys don't blame Nirvana. Kurt intentionally wrote Smells Like Teen Spirit as a parody of this song. He never intended for the song to be a hit. Come as you are was his intended stairway to stardom. But the unexpected happened and that was the reason Kurt hated Smells like teen spirit with passion. Anyway, Nice song.

    D.... C....

Devjyoti Chakraborty I thought kurt hated the song because he wanted to sing about youthful rebellion, but only found out after he released the song that Teen Spirit was actually a deodorant

    D.... C....

Strange. I read somewhere Kurt got the idea of the song because a girl wrote on his locker, " Kurt smells like teen spirit." which at that time was a famous deo brand.

    D.... C....

Devjyoti Chakraborty I guess there must be multiple reasons for him disliking his own song.

  16. G.... B....

I heard this song before Nirvana's big hit.. when I heard Nirvana for the first time I was like..wow.. they totally ripped off Men without Hats. hahaha.. and they totally did.

  17. s.... b....

I remember this video playing in the summer of '91 on MUCH. I was thinking: What the hell are MWH playing guitars for? I soon warmed up to it though.

  18. K.... G....

I remember when this came out, so fuckin good, reminds me of Screaming Trees and Nirvana

    K.... G....

    but much better

  19. T.... S....

Is Smells Like Teen Spirit a rip-off of this?

    T.... S....

    Tom Schuszter yes

    T.... S....

This was realeased in April 91 and Teen spirit in Sept 91, so who really knows. She hates me apparently was written in 93 and it sounds just like both of the songs. co inkadinkle perhaps ????

  20. m.... f....

FUCK THE HATERS.. THIS IS BRILLIANCE.. if you don't dig this .. you are a fake MWH fan..

  21. M.... B....

    Love this tune

  22. D.... H....

Best song they had. Nice to see instruments being played particularly guitars. Nice lead with that Gibson Firebird and Wah peddle.
They should have played like this from the start.....

    D.... H....

Early 1990s TISM (the Australia the Lucky Cunt EP) and Merril Bainbridge (especially her song "Julie") owe a lot to the sound of this album. The album itself owes a lot to mid-1980s REM (e.g. "The One I Love").

  23. J.... H....

    can't handle this X_____X *ded*

  24. J.... M....

Really like this album and the cover of I am the Walrus by The Beatles on it is just brilliant

    J.... M....

Oh my God! I keep telling people how awesome that cover is and nobody's heard of it.

  25. T.... O....

I loved this song then, still love it 25 years later. The most interesting bands are always those who take risks and challenge themselves. The "Sideways" album was a record the public didn't get, but that's their failing, not the band's.

    T.... O....

The album sounds like something TISM or REM could've made. I reckon it would have gone down well with the Aussie indie rock crowd.

    T.... O....

    Me too bud

  26. B.... J....

My question is how come they have other stuff on spotify but i can't find this?

    B.... J....

Because they want people to buy their music possibly.

    B.... J....

The only MWH stuff the band still own is Rhythm of Youth and Folk of the 80's part 3. Everything they did between 1987 and 1995 is owned by Polygram or whatever they're called now. This is why they had to re-record Pop Goes the World during the Love in the Age of War sessions.

  27. d.... ....

    forgotten brilliance.

  28. A.... ....

Close your eyes and its Frank Zappa vocals

  29. A.... ....

Never mind, this also compares well to Ace of Base's "Beautiful Life," except that they managed to hang on a few more years, up until their remake of "Cruel Summer."

  30. A.... ....

    So underappreciated.

  31. B.... ....

    FUCKING LIERS

    HE IS WEARING A HAT

  32. L.... ....

Michael Langevin from Voivod on drums

  33. T.... V....

    Love it..its reminiscent or the beginning to #Nirvana's #teenspirit rip #kirk 😭😭😥😫👑🎁🎻🎸🎸💖📻📺📝🏯

    T.... V....

Yep- he stole it- watered it down- then did the world a favor... .

  34. Z.... ....

Not bad, but not very memorable. It's weird, the lead singer actually sounds like he'd be a perfect fit for the grunge era, but it's pretty obvious the Safety Dance and Pop Goes The World had already defined them.

    Z.... ....

Grunge: worse than diarrhea whereas Men Without Hats were (and are again) a great band. Big difference.

  35. E.... ....

    help me..that remind me of a big Nirvana's song..a bit!..oh yes a mulato , a mosquito an albino ..yeah!

    E.... ....

    ดูหนังกำลังภายใน

    E.... ....

but this song was recorded before the Nirvana's song, so it's the Nirvana that ripped off from Men Without Hats

    E.... ....

sounds more like “i saw your mommy” by suicidal tendencies... and by association that “she fuckin hates me” song that took the riff from the suicidal song. but with the rhythm of smells like teen spirit.

    E.... ....

@szymikon1980 yeah Cobain was like let me vaguely copy that ultra cool Canadian synth pop 2 hit wonder bands crappy attempt to actually rock! Seems logical

    E.... ....

@Jon Foster Knowing Cobain's odd tastes, what you say as a joke is not outside the realm of possibilities.

  36. A.... ....

Men Without Synths.  But hey!  This incarnation is pretty good too.   And it's a cool hat, so :-P   I see the CD at least is available (unlike Pop Goes the World).

    A.... ....

I have literally never seen any Men Without Hats album in a store over here except Rythm Of Youth

  37. T.... U....

To everyone wondering why this got no play and only a handful of Canadians know about it is because it had minimal if any release in the USA, only Sook-yin Lee had balls enough to give it the Much Approval (back when a VG actually had some say in their set). No idea if it even crossed the pond. So yeah, no wonder the Men packed it in right afterwards...

    T.... U....

@MizzCerise i heard it back in the day on the old radio :) here in the uk great track !

    T.... U....

Tabitha Urukhai 90s Canadian rock was so wicked...so many bands on the road at the time playing any givin night of the week, good times!!

    T.... U....

They did make two albums after that.

  38. G.... S....

    Una gema escondida... un temazo...

  39. U.... P....

    Still love it!

  40. S.... S....

Great song, what is the debate here? I have the "tape" not CD of this and I am still in my 30r'ts. Did you hear the lead guitar there???

  41. B.... E....

that was the 90's everybody sounded the same.but NOBODY sounds like Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin. by the time the 80's and 90's came along there wasn't much left. cause bands of the 60's and 70's did it all. this is still a cool tune though. gonna give it to you sideways.thats great

  42. D.... C....

    All songs with same riff:
Foster the People - Pumped Up Kicks
    Grease - Summer Nights
Puddle of Mudd - She Hates Me
Suicidal Tendencies - I Saw Your Mommy
    Men Without Hats - Sideways
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
    Gorillaz - Rhinestone Eyes

    D.... C....

Domenico Colletti Boston - More Than a Feeling also has a similiar riff

    D.... C....

Yeah Boston too and countless others used riff, basic. I must say that the rhythm Smells Like is similar to MWOH. Possibly so basic lawsuit impossible.

  43. M.... ....

The main riff smells alot like teen spirit..if you get my drift. ahem

  44. i.... ....

BTW nice appearance of Michel langevin! ahah!

  45. i.... ....

''Puddle of Mudd - she hates me'' AND '' Éric Lapointe - Les Boys'' both took parts of that riff...

  46. i.... ....

Éric lapointe a TELLEMENT reprit ce riff pour ''Les Boys''. Hey j'te dis!

  47. M.... D....

    well said cyberhat !!!

  48. J.... F....

Finally, I know who sampled this song. Toddintheshadows made me aware of this song, and it's been bugging me ever since I heard it.

  49. K.... D....

what was that grunge band that sampled this song......... Puddle of Mudd, she hates me.....its been nagging me for years i knew i heard that rift before

  50. z.... ....

The participation of Voivod members was returning of a favour.

Ivan Doroschuk had helped Voivod with keyboards and production on their 1989 masterpiece, "Nothingface".

    z.... ....

Actually youre thinking of the amazing album Angelrat, not Nothingface. They are good friends. Ivans been seen recently sporting Voivod shirt. peace

  51. J.... B....

seems like ure the only one not liking this song:)

  52. c.... ....

    Smells like teen spirit
    And smells sooo good...
love, love, love will never ever die!

  53. s.... ....

Love the fact he's wearing a hat :) Still, love these guys. Esp. Ivan.

  54. F.... T....

That's right. "Away" from Voivod, one of Canada's music wonder...and Felix from "Idées noires" on guitar and back vocals. great lineup.

  55. S.... W....

Sideways is the only MWH album I don't have, and now I know why! I'm glad they temporarily stopped after this before it got any worse. Thankfully they redeemed themselves later when they went back to the good synth sound with NHBTP. I'm looking forward to the next album!

  56. R.... ....

how the hell did this not make it as atleast a super hit

  57. R.... ....

    simply incredible

  58. m.... ....

The riff goes all the way back to "Louie Louie".

  59. J.... F....

this song should be more famous!

  60. f.... o....

I saw your mommy and your mommy is dead.

  61. K.... T....

Each their song turns my worst day to the best one, ALWAYS!

  62. C.... ....

    Норм

  63. F.... G....

@mungent25 Also search this latin song "De musica ligera - Soda Stereo" from 1990

  64. F.... G....

@mungent25 Then listen Futurama Theme Song!

  65. d.... ....

I haven't heard this in ages, thanks for uploading it. I think it's the best song they've ever made.
But there is another great song called On Tuesday with Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull on flute, which I also haven't heard in ages.....It's not listed here,..It be great if someone could upload it.

  66. C.... ....

    That was bloody AWESOME!

  67. J.... B....

All these years later, Smells Like Teen Spirit is considered one of the best songs of all time.

And yet the song Nirvana stole the riff from goes drifts in obscurity.

    J.... B....

•This song and riff is very similar to Suicidal Tendencies "I Saw Your Mommy" so Men Without Hats ripped off them if anyone
•Someone close to Kurt has said he trying to write the ultimate pop song by using the riffs from Boston's More Than a Feeling and Blue Oyster Cult's Godzilla.
•Supposedly Men Without Hats were listening to Nirvana's Bleach when writing the Sideways album
•I felt like using using bullet points today.

  68. D.... ....

Ever heard a song called "I saw your mommy" by Suicidal Tendencies? I'm sure these guys heard it, and proceeded to rip them off big time!

  69. W.... ....

why didnt the music industry inform me that men without hats made the original song?... cant they sue?... if anyone ever copies my graphic designes im sueing them for everything they got

  70. b.... ....

@Redmanjj thanks hey rickenbacker? my dad has one of those basses

  71. C.... ....

It's a shame this song wasn't released in the USA. This could've easily been there "comeback" song for the grunge era.

  72. M.... C....

It sounds like Nirvana at the beginning

  73. G.... ....

These guitars riffs are just awesome, my favorite tune of theirs without a doubt

  74. b.... ....

Hey which guy is playing bass

  75. b.... ....

I heard they have a tour coming who else thinks they should play this live it would be awesome

  76. J.... L....

TroySavary, you are completely right. When I just heard this guitar then I realise where Nirvana took the sound from.
    Wow! What a terrific sound!

  77. J.... M....

this song is cool, but where is the synthesizer? i love the fact that they were that cool new wave/synthopop band from the 80's. But hay its also cool they are willing to try new stuff

  78. b.... ....

    This isnt on itunes? Fail

  79. J.... C....

Listen to come as u are then listen to 'Eighties by Killing Joke' which was written 7 years before come as u are.

  80. S.... L....

    @TroySavary i belive you lol

  81. M.... M....

Nirvana may have stolen the guitar part from this song. But the bass lines during the verses of Teen Spirit were ripped from the Pixies song Gauge Away. The Nirvana guys practically admited it in several interviews.

  82. w.... ....

@TroySavary Probably because they are different chord progressions. This is E, A, F#, B and Teen Spirit is E, A, G, C. They're played with a similar rhythm, but they're both so basic that you could hardly call it stealing.

  83. S.... ....

@Will316316 No, they were both written around the same time (in 1991). Unless this one was written in January while SLTS was written in December, or vice versa, it's hard to say who ripped the other one off (unless they *gasp* didn't, lol)

    S.... ....

SLTS was written in early 1991. This song was written in either 1989 or 1990.

In fact, the first pressing of Sideways was mastered on 27 March 1991, around the time SLTS first began to be performed live.

  84. W.... C....

@TroySavary Smells Like Teen Spirit was written before this song

  85. J.... K....

Trying to figure out that chord progression... E, A, Bm?, ???

  86. J.... F....

    er...make that 'chapeaux'

  87. J.... F....

This tune is awesome, but ivan's hat was a big nono.....they were supposed to be the 'hommes sans chapeax'!!

  88. F.... ....

decent quality vid, pretty good group, i should get the majority of there songs and put em on my mp3 lol

  89. M.... ....

This sounds more like Oasis than Nirvana.

  90. M.... ....

one of the most under rated albums of all time. I still listen to this day, not my fav song off the LP, but it's still a good one!

  91. C.... ....

    Tune!!!

  92. b.... ....

    true but its pretty awesome!

  93. b.... ....

man why wasnt this song a bigger hit?

  94. w.... ....

haha my band in high school would play this song and everyone thought we wrote it, since no one had ever heard it :D great great great song that no one knows, I still think the G#/A/Bb/B is genius over the E/A/F#/B - so obvious yet so good

  95. K.... S....

this whole album rocks! this my favorite mwh era. different than thier 80s synth pop albums.

  96. J.... B....

    Love the lead guitarists guitar!

  97. C.... ....

I'm sure it doesn't hurt we can understand Ivan a little better than Kurt,

  98. G.... L....

awesome post! I think the right channel is a a bit murky; and of course the main question - why is Ivan wearing a HAT?!?! they'll have to change the logo....
