I had to special order this as an import to the USA. Looked it up in a paper catalog. Love love love this album.

But, he does have a HAT.

I was just thinking about his hat and how my entire life is a lie.

However, if he is the only one with a hat, the band name is still valid as it is men with out hats not man without hat. lol

I was shocked when this record came out. What happened to the MWH I knew? Quickly grew to like it, and still do decades later. Great melody, and Ivan's magnificent voice.

If they had released this after nevermind broke the barrier they probably would've had a longer career

They did have a long carreer. First EP was in 1980 and there last album was released in 2012 (36 years apart). That being "Love in the Age of War". One of their best in my opinion.

This must have been when Ivan Doroschuk started messing with people, considering he is in fact wearing a hat.

I figured the hats were to hide hair loss.

Never understood why this album wasn't a monster. In the Meadow, Sideways, Nadine, rock on. I have subsequently read that the dickheads at the record label wanted more mindless pop like Safety Dance, which was cute, but not something to revisit forever. Too bad. I still play this one regularly since I bought it way the Hell back when it was released.

Guys don't blame Nirvana. Kurt intentionally wrote Smells Like Teen Spirit as a parody of this song. He never intended for the song to be a hit. Come as you are was his intended stairway to stardom. But the unexpected happened and that was the reason Kurt hated Smells like teen spirit with passion. Anyway, Nice song.

Strange. I read somewhere Kurt got the idea of the song because a girl wrote on his locker, " Kurt smells like teen spirit." which at that time was a famous deo brand.

I heard this song before Nirvana's big hit.. when I heard Nirvana for the first time I was like..wow.. they totally ripped off Men without Hats. hahaha.. and they totally did.

I remember this video playing in the summer of '91 on MUCH. I was thinking: What the hell are MWH playing guitars for? I soon warmed up to it though.

I remember when this came out, so fuckin good, reminds me of Screaming Trees and Nirvana

They should have played like this from the start.....

Early 1990s TISM (the Australia the Lucky Cunt EP) and Merril Bainbridge (especially her song "Julie") owe a lot to the sound of this album. The album itself owes a lot to mid-1980s REM (e.g. "The One I Love").

Oh my God! I keep telling people how awesome that cover is and nobody's heard of it.

I loved this song then, still love it 25 years later. The most interesting bands are always those who take risks and challenge themselves. The "Sideways" album was a record the public didn't get, but that's their failing, not the band's.

The album sounds like something TISM or REM could've made. I reckon it would have gone down well with the Aussie indie rock crowd.

The only MWH stuff the band still own is Rhythm of Youth and Folk of the 80's part 3. Everything they did between 1987 and 1995 is owned by Polygram or whatever they're called now. This is why they had to re-record Pop Goes the World during the Love in the Age of War sessions.

Yep- he stole it- watered it down- then did the world a favor... .

Not bad, but not very memorable. It's weird, the lead singer actually sounds like he'd be a perfect fit for the grunge era, but it's pretty obvious the Safety Dance and Pop Goes The World had already defined them.

Grunge: worse than diarrhea whereas Men Without Hats were (and are again) a great band. Big difference.

sounds more like “i saw your mommy” by suicidal tendencies... and by association that “she fuckin hates me” song that took the riff from the suicidal song. but with the rhythm of smells like teen spirit.

I have literally never seen any Men Without Hats album in a store over here except Rythm Of Youth

To everyone wondering why this got no play and only a handful of Canadians know about it is because it had minimal if any release in the USA, only Sook-yin Lee had balls enough to give it the Much Approval (back when a VG actually had some say in their set). No idea if it even crossed the pond. So yeah, no wonder the Men packed it in right afterwards...

that was the 90's everybody sounded the same.but NOBODY sounds like Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin. by the time the 80's and 90's came along there wasn't much left. cause bands of the 60's and 70's did it all. this is still a cool tune though. gonna give it to you sideways.thats great

Ivan Doroschuk had helped Voivod with keyboards and production on their 1989 masterpiece, "Nothingface".

Sideways is the only MWH album I don't have, and now I know why! I'm glad they temporarily stopped after this before it got any worse. Thankfully they redeemed themselves later when they went back to the good synth sound with NHBTP. I'm looking forward to the next album!

Nirvana may have stolen the guitar part from this song. But the bass lines during the verses of Teen Spirit were ripped from the Pixies song Gauge Away. The Nirvana guys practically admited it in several interviews.

@TroySavary Probably because they are different chord progressions. This is E, A, F#, B and Teen Spirit is E, A, G, C. They're played with a similar rhythm, but they're both so basic that you could hardly call it stealing.

@Will316316 No, they were both written around the same time (in 1991). Unless this one was written in January while SLTS was written in December, or vice versa, it's hard to say who ripped the other one off (unless they *gasp* didn't, lol)

SLTS was written in early 1991. This song was written in either 1989 or 1990.

In fact, the first pressing of Sideways was mastered on 27 March 1991, around the time SLTS first began to be performed live.
