Men At Work - Still Life Lyrics

There's a picture in the hall, I know
And it's from a time when feelings showed
Though I hold it close before my eyes
My heart refuses to see

Loving you could have been, oh so easy
But there is something you don't understand
Through the times when two were one completely
There was another in this well laid plan

This corridor seems to stretch for years ahead
But patient hearts cannot match times steady tread
Is this the threshold of a fantasy?
Is there still life at all?

Loving you could have been, oh so easy
But there is something you don't understand
Through the times when two were one completely
There was another in this well laid plan
Best laid plan of ours

Watering the garden, some comfort for the twilight years
Still, life never lingers, it marches past our veil of tears
A moment's all we've got, to have and to hold
Don't slip, don't blink, don't turn your head

With a photographic memory
I could live in a time that used to be
Is this the threshold of a fantasy?
Is there still life at all?

Loving you could have been, oh so easy
But there is something you don't understand
Through the times when I was won completely
There was another in this well laid plan

Loving you could have been, oh so easy
But there is something you don't understand
There was a time when I was won completely
Our emotions they got out of hand

"Is this the threshold of a fantasy? Is there still life at all?" As a fourteen year old listening to this album for the first time back in '85, that blew me away.

Like others have said, this song is probably one of their best songs partially because it's so different than the other tunes that have that care-free quality. "Still Life" is indeed thoughtful and brings out that yearning all of us at some point in our lives have: Missed opportunities for the kind of love that lasts.

Great band , I love their songs a lot tbh

this album was so under-rated. This song is by far one of their best. It's so sad and beautiful.

This feels like it has a heavy influence from The Police but with MAW's personal touch. It was certainly a different direction for them to go compared to their previous releases. Perhaps this was them trying to fill a gap considering The Police separated just a year earlier?

Greg was such a handsome aussie, and what a voice. A talented musician as a whole😍. Esta bella canción, junto con " I can see it in your eyes" y "overkilled", tiene la letra más profunda de MAW , excelentes músicos.

I don't know but this song in particular has taken me to so many places in my mind. Every time I listen to it I just forget about everyting that bothers me. It makes me go to a place where I feel relaxed and free completely. Also I write poetry and the lyrics of this song inspired to write many many poems dedicated to girls I like, love or pretend. Love it, really.

I might prefer and love the first two albums, but this album has great moments.

Two Hearts was pretty much the death of Men At Work from their 4 year run together. At this point, Jerry Spieser the drummer and John Rees quit the band, and Ron Strykert quit along the recordings of Two Hearts. This kinda lacks the happy-go music from Business As Usual and Cargo, sounding really dark but yet it sounds like they fully matured from their origins. Some of the tracks do have a bit of the early MAW charm, but just with entirely different lyrics and the meaning. Still Life is a shining example of the different tone from the first two albumns previously released before.

I really miss Men at Work, they were the greatest. Although their run was quiet short for a Band, they managed to change the world of music with 2 Albums (Business as usual, Cargo), a thing only few managed to do.

I can't agree more. Bands and artists evolve. This record is my favorite of all of them, because it delves much deeper than the others. Rather like watching the evolution of Talk Talk. Mark (God rest him, and no fair, dude) took that band in a direction the popular culture couldn't digest. Same thing here.

Would I have liked more Men at Work? Sure. Would I trade more for this? Probably not.

Yeah Greg and Collin remained. But they seperated after this and began making solo projects. Collin went on to making solo albums.

Greg went on to helping writing songs and using his Saxophone skills to help bands.

    RIP GREG
