Mellencamp, John - Taxi Dancer Lyrics
Oh yeah
Well she started out, just to be a dancer
Gonna make her livin' dancin'
In the Broadway shows
So she hitchhiked cross the country
Where your dreams are made
Your debts must be paid on time
Well she wasn't used to livin' in the city
So she took a job cleanin' up as a maid
At the Grammercy Park Hotel
And all her auditions
They didn't turn out so pretty
So she took a job dancin'
At the bar down the street as well
[Chorus:]
I'll hold you close, Taxi Dancer
And I'll listen to how your outgrew your dreams
How they faded away
I'll hold you close, Taxi Dancer
We can pretend this floor is the Broadway stage
Well I don't know how long or how far
Her fortune did take her
But I heard she sits alone drunk
In a bar downtown on 42nd Street
And sometimes an old Butch
Will slip a quarter into the jukebox
And she'll stagger to the bar
And dance with that girl for free
[Chorus]
Oh the stage, baby

What's really sad about John cougar is that from the album rain on the scarecrow on, his music went right to shit... He sold out and became a pop music singer. What a waste! He has such talent and could have kept making killer music but he didn't
That is bull shit. He couldn't be further away from a sell out pop singer.
the best album and the best song
Back when he was John Cougar . . .
Beautiful song ..by a Rockin Roll Legend..
Love early Mellencamp (cougar)
Hands down, one of the world's best rock balladeers.
Funny I know a lot of Dancers and their lives are pretty much this song
A very little known gem by John Mellencamp. I have listened to this song for many years now, it never gets old.
What a beautifully written and heartfelt song, very poetic. I love John's earliest releases the best. Thanks for sharing, Mike.
This is probably one of the best songs from John's early career, thanks Joe Allen, love you big guy. 😊💃🏼💗
the album is just the best and this song is just so mesmerising and soulful
agree !
very sad lyrics!
@MrPizza063 I think so😀
May I've this dance with you my lady?
Couger/Mellencamp's first album was an artistic gem, his best.
@Tom Markel the best
@Dimitry Raskolnikov this album is amamzing.. the piano the sax drums I have. always played it back to back so cool and still stands to this day
Dimitry Raskolnikov -i only heard him say he didnt like the name Cougar & that the song "this time" was lame also he's not a fan of videos
Wholeheartedly agree!
Wasn't his first album. Chestnut Street Incident.
John Cougar...Tom Waits ?? Beautiful song X10
Taxi dancer always reminded me of the girl that broke my heart back in 1979. I left for the oil fields of Wyoming, I was 26 years old and I always thought we would see each other some day. I have spent countless hours thinking of her over the past 38 years. I just found out she died 5 years ago. Fuck! I will always miss you Sue, my Taxi Dancer.

Your story is meaningful. Thank you for sharing. So many beautiful songs comprise the soundtrack of our lives. No room here to tell you mine. It would actually be a book with many chapters.
Yes. .we all have experienced heartaches...but thats fate...learning in life...
I'll get straight to the point here. I feel that this song is beautiful - a musical gem. Based on the lyrics, pace and performance, John Mellencamp should be so proud of providing this treat to all, albeit some time ago. To borrow from another "Key" tune of his (yes, my intermezzo): he wrote it first.
The irony is you can buy the album on the US iTunes store ... but not where I live here in Denmark ...! Love this song - sentimental favorite.
Order it from Amazon.ca or Amazon.com.
