Mellencamp, John - Minutes To Memories Lyrics

On a Greyhound thirty miles beyond Jamestown
He saw the sun set on the Tennessee line
He looked at the young man who was riding beside him
He said I'm old kind of worn out inside
I worked my whole life in the steel mills of Gary
And my father before me I helped build this land
Now I'm seventy-seven and with God as my witness
I earned every dollar that passed through my hands
My family and friends are the best thing I've known
Through the eye of the needle I'll carry them home

[Chorus:]
Days turn to minutes
And minutes to memories
Life sweeps away the dreams
That we have planned
You are young and you are the future
So suck it up and tough it out
And be the best you can

The rain hit the old dog in the twilight's last gleaming
He said Son it sounds like rattling old bones
This highway is long but I know some that are longer
By sunup tomorrow I guess I'll be home
Through the hills of Kentucky 'cross the Ohio river
The old man kept talking 'bout his life and his times
He fell asleep with his head against the window
He said an honest man's pillow is his peace of mind
This world offers riches and riches will grow wings
I don't take stock in those uncertain things

[Chorus]

The old man had a vision but it was hard for me to follow
I do things my way and I pay a high price
When I think back on the old man and the bus ride
Now that I'm older I can see he was right

Another hot one out on highway eleven
This is my life it's what I've chosen to do
There are no free rides No one said it'd be easy
The old man told me this my son I'm telling it to you

[Chorus]

Mellencamp, John Minutes To Memories Comments
  1. Danny Irish

This song is the only positive memory of my real dad I have. Funny how a song can make you forget all the bullshit for 4 mins and bring out the single good memory you have of a person.

  2. Boneshadow

I miss my dad. He was the first mans man I ever met. He taught me to be a man without even teaching. I learned by example, over time.

  3. Jeffery Connell

An honest man's pillow is his peace of mind

    Liam Unruly

"Another hot one out on highway eleven, this is my life it's what I've chosen to do, there's no free rides no-one said it'd be easy, the only man told me this my son I'm tellin' it to you".

  4. Budget Water

This song could have been for my Grandfather , lost him almost 40 years age and I miss him every day. Can't listen to this song without a tear in my eye.

  5. Katherine Bennett

    Ahhh...one of my favorites.

  6. tinfoilhatter

the cow bell works! it frickin' works, kenny! , easy with that thing, kenny, hey!

  7. Tom Sillers

"Days turn to minutes and minutes to memories, life sweeps away the dreams we had planned." Bleak.

  8. Jonathan Wallace

When I was a kid, my dad had a poster in his office with quotes that I guess got him through hard times. They were mostly things that his brothers or father had said but there were a few others from famous people on it too. I distinctly remember that "suck it up and tough it out." was one of them.

    tinfoilhatter

now that i'm older, i can see he was right!

  9. hotajax

    Thanks for this man...peace...

    Sharon Humphrey

I really love this song it hits the heart

    Mic Norton

@Sharon Humphrey ..it's one of those songs that reflect good things to good people,, some stories are more ambiguous in the sense that the older person may not have been quite as honest as this old guy in this scene,, but like Jackson Browne says in Running on Empty, you don't conflict who you really are with what you may have to do to survive... obviously I'm not talking any crazy stuff like murder rape or major theft, that kind of stuff is ridiculous but the point being that, today anyway, a lot of people may have to sell cocaine or weed or something, to meet the rent obligations and keep food on the table for themselves and their kids... And there are Coke dealers who actually do have kids, I beg your pardon I do realize I'm expanding a lot on the intent of your comment which of course that Mr Mellencamp does mix an important message with a heartfelt catchy tune, so here I suppose I should shut up and leave the politics for Facebook LOL and say I agree with you...

  18. Tony Gillians

Minutes to Memories is the sweetest song by John Mellencamp.

    tinfoilhatter

that cow bell notwithstanding, it's one strong frickin' track, ain't no doubt about it!
no, i love the cowbell, heck!
i might've been tempted to use the whole chromatic collection up in der', yo!

    Liam Unruly

    "Again Tonight"

  19. Daniel Nagle

One of the underlooked great songs by John Mellencamp

    Mic Norton

One of the most existential tunes ever conceived...imo that is...

    tinfoilhatter

frickinay-right it is! you frickin' said it, ese!

    Jeff Madden

    His best, in my opinion.
