Mellencamp, John - Love And Happiness Lyrics

Well, we're droppin' our bombs
In the southern hemisphere
And people are starving
That live right here
And they're tearing down walls
In the name of peace
And they're killing each other
In the Middle East

[Chorus:]
But love and happiness
Have forgotten our names
And there's no value left
In love and happiness

They raise the price of oil
And they censor our mouths
If you are a young couple today
Forget buying a house
And we wage or wars
In the neighborhoods
We kill the young to feed the old
And man that ain't no good

[Chorus]

So, if you sell arms
Or you run dope
You got respect
And you got hope
But the rest of us die
On your battle fields
With wounds that fester and bleed
But never heal

[Chorus]

I really like the live version of this they did on MTV

  10. s.... ....

    Pretty heavy for JCM🤘 I dig it👍

  11. M.... M....

Yes. I agree this is a fantastic record. I remember buying the CD at Tower Records in 1991 and enjoyed all the songs on the Album. Yes, Grunge was on it's way when "Whenever We Wanted" by JCM was released, but I still liked his album. It took awhile for me to accept the change in rock music in 1991-1992, but eventually I grew to like an extremely different sound in a band called Nirvana. However, I still remain a JCM fan.

  12. P.... M....

    Good song. Typical rock.

  13. J.... M....

I discovered J.M. and Tom Petty at the same time. 1992. I was 20 and neither of them were very well-known here in Spain. But Whenever we wanted and Into the great wide open sounded great to me and they are still. I tried to get more good records from both artists and I got lots from Petty but I can´t say the same about Mellencamp. This is the only record I really like but it´s so good that I know I´ll keep on listening till the end of my bloody life.

    J.... M....

Get Mellencamps Rain On The Scarecrow album. Classic.

    J.... M....

Keep on rocking in the free world !!!

  14. E.... B....

    Best song he ever did.

  15. T.... ....

Poor Kenny Arnoff. If he hadn’t of gone bald by the time he was 23, he would of been as big as Tommy Lee.
    Life is so unfair. 😪

  16. d.... r....

Lonesome Jubilee is still my fave - every track

    d.... r....

Lonesome Jubilee was best tour in my opinion. Even though John would disagree. He says best stuff is his latest...I went to Sad Clowns and Hill Billies.Nothing like old days but He is still the best ever! I think he is one of greatest songwriters to ever live.

  17. d.... r....

Saw JM at Wembley Arena in 1992 - CLASS. Loved the geezer from the early 80's. Genious X

  18. T.... R....

    THAT IS RIGHT MAN

  21. E.... ....

That right-channel guitar is the fucking truth.

  22. C.... 2....

Saw him in concert for this tour. did a great job and the drummer gets a heck of a workout. But every word means just as much today as it did back then maybe even more. Not a thing has changed.

  23. A.... ....

    Killer Riff!

  24. F.... F....

just read months old comments, oh well, off to watch "Rain On the Scarecrow"

  25. F.... F....

damn what a great song - great video with John avoiding Close Ups and letting his drummer go crazy

  26. S.... D....

Love John, a man with meaning !

  27. R.... G....

This song on Scarecrow, Rumbleseat, came out around the same time that "nukin' hot rumba", Mt. St. Helena, exploded. 'cause "ma is a nukin' "...right?
How I know this is because I wrote a poem about it! And though it's scads and scads of years later? I still have it...funny.

  28. L.... A....

The intro smashes into your mental senses like a car that runs through a red light in there lane after you've started through your green light to go forward.....

  29. D.... N....

METAL ROCK ROCK ROCK ROCK!!!!!!!!!! WE'RE SO FUCKED, WE'RE SHIT OUT OF LUCK!!!!!!

  30. M.... N....

So sorry. I abide my time. Let us raise peace now.

  36. D.... H....

    My fave John song!!

  37. J.... M....

Andy page ,I think in my opinion the trumpet solo is digested with the rest of the song and put into perspective it sounds to me like someone screaming the nation the people that's the trumpet solo

  38. B.... ....

    liberal kook but great song.

    B.... ....

+BXXification gotta reply to ya stupid fascist hitler lover right wing dumb got my truck wit my rebel flag kkk fool ya are,and i bet ya have less than a 6th grade education

    B.... ....

I don't think about politics when listening to rock and roll. period

  39. A.... Y....

This guy is timeless and ageless. I saw him at the Sony centre in Toronto and he was absolutely amazing.

  40. b.... ....

John ditched his mullet when he hooked with Elaine Irwin.

    b.... ....

+bucky468 what the hell does that mean,, hair cuts change in all of us fool,,as time moves on,,we lose what once we had,,it is inevitable

  41. O.... O....

He's a liberal fuck progressive but such a remarkable talent..... Amazing

    O.... O....

Excuse my gross ignorance, the word "liberal" comes from "liberty" (which in essence means freedom), correct? and "progressive" comes from "progress", correct?... just trying to learn something. Thank you.

  42. D.... R....

    Virtuoso

  43. T.... S....

The lead-off track to what I consider THE BEST album in JM's catalog (Human Wheels is #2 for me). The critics hated it in '91 and the whole industry was undergoing a rather tumultuous upheaval so it's not a big surprise at it's abysmal sales figures. Kenny Aronoff kills on this album from one end to the other. The edgy tenor of the material and the conviction of the performances are what really make this an important piece of this man's remarkable career.
This ain't the "let's sit around the campfire and sing Kum-by-ya" kind of stuff...which is an encapsulated appraisal of most of his previous recordings.
Johnny grew a set and it was a ballsy move to release "Whenever we Wanted" into the market at such a point in time.
With hindsight? Sadly, it's still as relevant today as it was 23 years ago.
It is what I consider to be the most "complete" album he has ever released. Focus, vision, and solid writing from one end to the other...all killer, NO filler.
Human Wheels is close but "French Shoes" (although it stands on musicianship) still falls short on the aspect of relevance.
    Off to other tracks...Peace, out!.

    T.... S....

Terrie Ron Schock Like many it was swallowed up by Grunge

    T.... S....

    well said. fk yeah!

  46. c.... t....

I was kinda thiking that history repeats its self so songs like this will always be relivent (sp). 20 yrs from now this song will still rock

  60. A.... S....

    @StSimonMartyr Well said !

  61. B.... V....

@jazzmanee If by outdated you mean theres no hip hop in it, then yeah, its outdated. But I prefer it this way! Trumpet solo anytime over hip hop!

  62. B.... V....

Awesome song! Loved it then, love it now. Lyrics perfect still today.

  63. d.... ....

What else do you call invading and occupying 2 nations today, on LIES?

Proven Lies..we are enforing UN resolutions that pretext for which are proven lies, No WMDs, No 911 ties.

America is Broke now Gomer as a result.
We have overthrown democratic govts and installed puppet dictators, such as in Egypt, Iran, Domincan Rep., Haiti, Congo, Chile, et al.

    And there is always blowback.
JC is spot on in this song, and you need to read your Constitution.

    'Entangling Alliances with NONe"

  67. b.... ....

@jtmichaelson Well said. I miss Kenny very much in John's lineup

  68. b.... ....

This Song Rings So Very True Today as It Did In 1991. Just Listen To The Lyrics

  69. M.... M....

sane message, just louder the scream of the horns over the years

  70. P.... ....

I love Johnny's songs...but I detest this thing about us killing our young and dropping bombs on the innocent. Life and liberty and pursuit of happiness (and love) are not mutually exclusive and we have, as a country, many times asked people to die to perserve our ability to live in peace and liberty and be happy. Rock stars did not create this country or do anything to preserve it. How many have gone on USO tours in the actual combat zones over the past 10 years...way too few.

  71. J.... B....

Every sentence in this song is as relevant today as it was 20 years ago when it was first released...scary and sad at the same time...nothing has improved in the past 20 years...he should re-release this song.

  72. n.... ....

    oooohh booooy

  73. R.... C....

Love your music so many songs I like

  74. J.... M....

This song is worth the wait after those crappy adverts. Thanks once again VEVO.

  75. S.... S....

Possibly JCM most kick ass song? and even better than the Al Green track of the same name

  76. J.... B....

@jazzmanEE Don't think so...the lyrics still apply...maybe more now than they did then...

  77. b.... ....

@jazzmanEE Yes How So? Seems to fit the times in 2010 as it did in 1991

  78. b.... ....

I have always loved John Mellencamp and all his music. Kenny Aronoff is by far one of my very favorite drummers whom has played with some of the very best acts out there.

  79. A.... P....

never really "got" the trumpet solo. otherwise it's a great tune.

    A.... P....

Andy Page ditto dat..out of place... b who u r..ges not a trumpet solo guy..guitar or organ or accordian

  80. A.... P....

    @jazzmanEE How so?

  81. A.... ....

    Awesome sunglasses. Haha.

  82. W.... ....

great track, great album, without doubt my favourite Mellecamp album

  83. A.... D....

    John you are too cool.

  84. B.... ....

Easily one of Mellencamps best songs. They made a great video here as well. Too bad it was in the dying era of video as a medium. You can tell these guys love playing this song. Especially the drummer. That guy probably prays each night they'll put this in the set when they are out on the road. Just good stuff all around

  85. g.... ....

The brilliant lyrics and tune makes this one of John's best songs. just one among hundreds though ..wish he'd play UK again prefer in Scotland. loads of fans here .. GB
