Melissa Etheridge - This War Is Over Lyrics

Take off my shield
Carry my sword
I won't need it anymore
Find me a sky
Give me my wings
Frozen and broken but free

Tell them I'm all right
I'm coming home
Tell them I'm all right
I am alone
This war is over
I'm coming home

Take off my shame
Bury it low
I won't need it anymore
Find me the sun
Give me it whole
Melt all the chains in my soul

Tell them I'm all right
I'm coming home
Tell them I'm all right
I am alone
This war is over
I'm coming home

Take off my pain
Carry me slow
I won't fight here anymore
Tell them I'm all right
I'm coming home
Tell them I'm all right
I am alone
This war is over
I'm coming home

The beauty of music is that it lends itself to the interpretation of each listener.

  3. l.... d....

anyone know who plays that nice lead guitar? and is that a fretless bass?

  4. L.... K....

A beautiful tearful song. My shame will be buried or burned soon

    L.... K....

What do you mean. Is it WORDS of song or you crying out

  5. N.... S....

    One of her best.

  6. J.... C....

Whay a gteat song yes ots a war with. A song writer. What a suprise in relation to garbage music. Great song i undetstand

  7. N.... S....

People here have stated that this song means different things, and not just the Irish situation. I think each of us hears it from our own life’s experiences and that determines how we “see” it. I think it is perfect for Brad Pitt’s character’s death at the end of the movie, or the struggles in Ireland and elsewhere, or the very private battles we all face.

  8. T.... G....

War is never over because mankind long ago lost the war against his own greed. War just continues from generation to generation, only the age and the uniforms change. This proves evolution is a load of Bollocks, as mankind just can't evolve to a higher state on his own or by random chance.

    T.... G....

The song is THIS war is over, meaning of course his war, as he dies.

  9. A.... R....

Heaven holds the faithful departed .

  10. A.... R....

Thank you for this SUPERB masterpiece of a song . Love and applaud from India 😇

  11. N.... C....

Just finished the movie and met this song.

  12. D.... F....

To my Viet Nam war veteran brothers who survived . This war never ended . Ya think about the guysall the time , and you never forget them either. It lives in the back of your mind. It's been 40 years now.We might hide our pain with smiles , but we're still dying inside . War is Hell .

    D.... F....

Dennis. I lost friends in that war, and after all these many years when I ask why we were there, the only answer I ever hear is "fighting communism." If you want some real answers, look up "The Golden Triangle" and the CIA's involvement in the opium trade.

  13. B.... M....

I am considering killing myself. In my last correspondence to this world, I am going to ask this song be played at my funeral.

    B.... M....

Please do not do something so drastic. I feel, like you, that this should be my final song since my children have abandoned me, but I keep hanging on, hoping, they might remember me someday.

    B.... M....

I hope you are both still here

  14. T.... M....

I just finished watching "The Devil's Own" came on at 3:19am-5:15am on Starz and because of that film I came here to listen to that song and in the process read many of your comments (it's funny how one thing leads to another). Sorry for those who have lost and to those who are losing, but know that you are not really alone and we all share this place together. Peace found those you've lost, it will find you, me and the rest too. Good morning, good afternoon and good night to all, where ever you are.

    T.... M....

Same to you...wherever you are....and wherever life takes you.

War, such a waste. It is very hard for me to go to the Wall. I'm almost 73 now, and soon my war will be over too. Only the Dead will see the end of war.....Plato! This song will be played at my funeral. Semper Fi 'til I Die!!!!!!!!!!

    6.... ....

+61MARINES67 i will hit the wall soon. the closer it gets the more i want to live; yet i am tired.

    6.... ....

+Linda Kloss My only concern about the end is those I will leave behind.  I have led a full life.

    6.... ....

    Amen to that

    6.... ....

I went to the Wall to honor the first boy who ever kissed me, so long ago. It was heartbreaking to see his name etched there. Bless you for serving.

    Mucho. Gratis. TYVM. B3

  20. s.... y....

Gracias a la app Shazam he descubierto a esta artista! :)

  21. M.... T....

me being a 15 year old I cant really express accurately how I feel about this song with out sounding like a fool but I just want to say that this song is very pleasant to listen to.

    M.... T....

that was well spoken, thank you for the advice sir

  22. L.... ....

So many comments about how touching, moving this song is, how it induces weeping. The reason, musically speaking, is simply the emphasis at a key juncture on the lowered seventh degree of the scale, played as a four-three suspension over the subdominant. In fact, the lowered seventh degree is a synecdoche for the subdominant of the subdominant, even more intensely evocative of wistfulness. . . .

    L.... ....

+Lexicop2 I have no idea what you just said but it sounded good. All I can say about music is my ears know what I like to hear and my heart knows what I love.

    L.... ....

Lexicop2, Do you read your sheet music when you are on the toilet? Get a life.

  23. t.... w....

Brad Pitt was really good in this . Harrison Ford was a little long in the tooth to try and pull some of the stunts, like at the end when he ran and jumped on the boat. Good song

    t.... w....

Are you kidding me? That jump was legend :)

  24. h.... j....

agreed Bo Byers... but one can also refer to global issues that never resolve.. soldiers dying for the same the same the same over and over again.. so in a spiritual sense.. when are we going to evolve????

  25. B.... B....

This song has nothing to do with fighting in actual wars between countries and to see it that way is to miss its profound point. It's about one's personal journey in life and fighting that internal war with one's self; trying to extract one's self from the chains of ego. Exteranl wars between countries are only the result of the human condition which is at war with itself and externalizes the conflict rather than fighting the real war...which is with the self...most never do it singularly and humans certainly don't do it collectively...only through actual war and of course, it never works.

    B.... B....

    Such a wonderful statement.

    B.... B....

Bo, You left out the fact that many of us participated in Viet Nam and can relate to both view points...

    B.... B....

Russ, I agree.  While there is that which speaks of everyone's personal journey through life, One can not, must not, forget the soldier.  Semper Fi.

    B.... B....

Mr. Byers: Your remark is a total bunch of lofty words that adds up to a bunch of pseudo-philosophical B.S. I have watched this movie many times, and you missed the entire soul of this character ("trying to extract one's self from the chains of ego"). And furthermore, unrelated to the situation in this movie, most wars are started by corrupt governments and always over seizing the natural resources of another country for $$$$$$ and power. They send our youth to fight rich old men's battles, persuading them through propaganda and lies of patriotism and benefits to the poor kids, promising them educational training, a steady salary and retirement benefits. Then they treat the returning vets like garbage. Many die horrific deaths, and many return with crippled bodies, mental problems and end up homeless on the streets. When will this atrocity ever end?

    This song breaks my heart.

    B.... B....

You left out the war over freewill the God given divine and aultimate democracy. The very thing Satan desires to remove from the human condition, so he can enslave mankind in this world and the next. We fight not just wars of this earth but those principaliits of the air. Taken from the New Testiments.

  26. n.... u....

Such a powerful song. It can be used for those currently fighting a war over seas, on homeland and personal wars. I dedicate this to all fighting and struggling to survive. The video is of course for the movie but I will use it as my goodbye to this cruel world when it is my time. It sums up all the time spent fighting a loosing and seemingly endless battle..

  27. A.... G....

love this song respect all the soldiers doesn't matter which country they belong to, sometimes or many times they fight for the wrong cause wrong country wrong leader but still they dont ask questions jst keep fighting without them the world would be static

I lost my big brother this morning, he died in a car wreck around mid morning. I've chosen this song to sing at his funeral because this was his favorite song and it just fits him completely. R.I.P. Brian I'll miss you greatly.

  37. 6.... ....

For those of us that had the opportunity to go to war and lose people you served with literally next to you this song has a special meaning. They were true heroes and valiant warriors. They went home, their war was over. It has been 45 years sinsce combat and this song brings back those haunting memories. Hate the war, respect the warriors.

Hauntingly beautiful, very fitting for the ending of that film. I had forgotten how much I like that song, and the entire album for that matter! Thanks for posting!

  43. R.... M....

    Love it.

  44. l.... d....

i would like to dedicate this song to all the brave souls at occupy wall street, who are standing up against tyranny and the evil that has taken over the world, also to the brave men and women in the military who are dying right now overseas fighting for our country, and dying because of big corporations, banks, and evil men

  45. S.... S....

I have also selected this as my memorial song to take me to the next journey...Life has been a battle, and, when the time comes, I pray there is a heaven and I will get to see my Parents, Brothers, Grandparents, Uncles, Aunts and the rest of my family and friends. I, too have battled hard and although I sometimes felt like giving up, I didn't, I battled onward...seems some folks have a fabulous life and then there are others who constantly struggle to remain a good and true person.
    Love to all.

    S.... S....

    I have the same thought.

  46. s.... ....

I have selected this song to say it all upon my death. For all the ups and downs, its been a fight and when the time comes, I will be going home, the war will be over. No other song can explain what a constant battle my life has been, I have never given up, but damn, I must admit I will be glad to stop fighting.

  47. b.... ....

This is my favorite song by Melissa. I am suprised there arent any more comments. You feel and see this song. Its not just about one particular war but some very personal wars that a person cant even talk about. And surviving, defeating, and overcoming.
