Melanie - Mr. Tambourine Man Lyrics

Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning, I'll come followin' you

Though I know that evenin's empire has returned into sand
Vanished from my hand
Left me blindly here to stand but still not sleeping
My weariness amazes me, I'm branded on my feet
I have no one to meet
And the ancient empty street's too dead for dreaming

Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning, I'll come followin' you

Take me on a trip upon your magic swirlin' ship
My senses have been stripped, my hands can't feel to grip
My toes too numb to step
Wait only for my boot heels to be wanderin'
I'm ready to go anywhere, I'm ready for to fade
Into my own parade, cast your dancing spell my way
I promise to go under it

Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning, I'll come followin' you

Though you might hear laughin', spinnin', swingin' madly across the sun
It's not aimed at anyone, it's just escapin' on the run
And but for the sky there are no fences facin'
And if you hear vague traces of skippin' reels of rhyme
To your tambourine in time, it's just a ragged clown behind
I wouldn't pay it any mind, it's just a shadow you're seein' that he's chasing

Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning, I'll come followin' you

Then take me disappearin' through the smoke rings of my mind
Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves
The haunted, frightened trees, out to the windy beach
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free
Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands
With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves
Let me forget about today until tomorrow

Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning, I'll come followin' you

Melanie Mr. Tambourine Man Comments

This must be what Dylan heard in his head while he wrote this song. This is how the song was meant to be interpreted and sung... heart-wrenching, tender and vulnerable.

  2. D.... R....

  3. F.... E....

She helps you to overcome the Greta Tunafish-nightmare... in a wonderful way

  4. M.... R....

Obviously must thank Bob Dylan for the beautiful lyrics. I also thank The Byrds and Melanie Safka for their undeniably beautiful versions. Personally i like the Byrds version (1965 released) because of the sweet 1960's memories their version returns to me. Peace.

  5. E.... h....

You make me breath again. Thanks for sharin'

Dylan is the greatest poet, but Melanie brings that poetry to life in a way that no one else does. Thank you Bob Dylan for the poetry but thank you most of all to Melanie for giving it life

  19. S.... B....

Picture yourself in the desert, perhaps on a Native American reservation around a campfire, & that's what this song sounds like.

  20. S.... B....

I wonder how she does Beatle songs.

  21. S.... B....

Melanie puts her stamp on an already established song & makes it her own. A true songbird. 🐦🎼

omg wow ! takes me back to the sixties . im getting on a bit now , but oh, that incredible voice , and incredible interpretation is fantastic , makes you want to shed a tear , and i did ! love you Melanie x

  30. J.... S....

This has to be the most beautiful yet very poignant version of this great classic. Remember hearing first off the album way back - it's lost none of it's impact despite the passing of the years. In fact the whole of this album was something else. In my view she is unique in the pop world.

  31. J.... M....

    What a bloody pathetic voice.

    J.... M....

You fucking nailed it there, John!

Pathos as in 'a quality that evokes pity or sadness. From the Greek word for "suffering " '.

I hope that's what you meant.

  32. G.... V....

I love Melanie's version of this classic Dylan song. I wish she would have sung all the verses though as her version is so haunting.

  33. F.... K....

Hey Melanie I love listening you singing!

  34. R.... R....

I know tha it's been posted a long time ago. but I like to make comment in respect an d honor to the great Melanie Safka, I have been listening to her songs for many years since I was a very young boy, back on the early 70's. this my favorite version from her. I qualified this rendition as good as the great Bob Dylan. I know that the birds took it to top many years ago, but is her version that really touches me. Melanie has a soul and a sentimental way to interpret any song she sings and reaches million of people's hearts including me. way to go Melanie keep up your work.

  35. a.... w....

love this saw her live brilliant!

  36. S.... L....

I want to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free.

  37. L.... A....

Melanie broke down the music, and allowed the slow release of all it's mystery and pleasure

  38. T.... P....

    THE bEST!

  39. P.... G....

A strong and sensitive interpretation of Dylan's poetic classic...

  40. C.... S....

    These covers are amazing !!!!

  41. f.... ....

I come back to this every now and then for the best of reasons. I once had a girlfriend from 1978 to 1983. She would eventually die of cystic fibrosis, but not before we shared great times at the small town radio station I worked at and elsewhere. I used to make her cassettes because she really liked, as she told it, "all those records you played that I've never heard before." So after she died, I visited her mother a few times and she gave me a few of the cassettes back with some other mementos. On the cassette with this song on it, she had circled "Mr Tambourine Man." I'll never know completely why, but Melanie's voice and her voice were very similar, so this still cuts through me like a knife, but it is such a sweet sorrow. A sweet sorrow that will outlive us both.

    f.... ....

    Thanks for sharing this, fek2000.

  45. B.... H....

    My favourite album and track

  46. N.... B....

    This lady's voice.....!

  47. J.... J....

Help me out. Why do some think that this is "the best" cover of this song. This girl sounds like she is giving a speech not singing a song. I prefer the versions where the artist actually sings the song. I'm certainly not critizing her. Just need help with a divergent point of view.

  48. J.... B....

    oh my god....so beautiful

  49. B.... N....

Sends shivers down my spine every time I hear it - wonderful.

  50. M.... G....

I'm seeing her in Ann Arbor, MI on Friday!

    m.... s....

Pooped herself next to me in 76 on a airplane. Didn't seem to care. Ginger smell you know what I mean. Big girl at time. Back door like the Mersey tunnel. Never felt it exit. Scruffy mare. Comments please. Do you think that is ok. Sweet corn the lot....

  94. J.... O....

Now at 71, I look back at those hippy days and  don't really know how most of us got through them. I talk to fifty year olds and tell them I think they are lucky to have missed 1964-1974. Just me thinking.

    J.... O....

64 & 74? Ali won Liston & Foreman. Tough years for the states!

    J.... O....

Tough times for the whole world as well. Melanie, Baez, and Janis got us through. Cheers.
