Melanie - California Dreamin' Lyrics

All the leaves are brown and the sky is grey
I've been for a walk on a winter's day
I'd be safe and warm if I was in L.A
California dreamin' on such a winter's day

Stopped into a church I passed along the way
Well I got down on my knees and I pretend to pray
You know the preacher lights the coals, he knows I'm gonna stay
California dreamin' on such a winter's day

All the leaves are brown and the sky is grey
I've been for a walk on a winter's day
I'd be safe and warm if I was in L.A
California dreamin' on such a winter's day
California dreamin' on such a winter's day
California dreamin' on such a winter's day

She has a real haunting English sensibility to her vocals, like Sandy Denny, and some others...

My dearest honey Melanie, I really love you. thank you for making my life as beautiful as you are...

  8. S.... C....

One of my favorite tunes and this version rocks<3...Light & Love...

  9. S.... B....

Melanie should really put out an album of cover songs.

  10. S.... B....

Everytime she covers a classic, she makes it her own by putting her special touch, ironically she came up from the same village coffeehouses that John Phillips & the others came from, so basically it's a tribute to old friends.

  11. T.... ....

    Holy shit..... Wow!!!!!!!

  12. S.... C....

A very good version of a great song! She would be great to see live. I doubt she tours Texas much. Hopefully I am wrong.

  13. k.... d....

I think, she made it, as in eternal queen of excellence - perfection - vocal majesty and inflections
This is genuine talent - without the ego - or super fame.
Perhaps she is a performers gifted performer.

  14. D.... S....

sitting tantra-style staring at the candle...sharing secrets ---only we understand...m.y.t...march 07/2019...

  15. D.... S....

Now I know where Adele got the inspiration for "Skyfall".

  16. S.... ....

How comes that everyone is an expert and feels the need to criticise? We all should better just listen to this great music...

    S.... ....

    precies, enjoy her voice.

  17. S.... C....

Perhaps she had some talent. Then she got old and fat.

  18. J.... V....

I am an admirer of Melanie since my teen age, first tune I heard of her I hear was "Bobo's Party" , still have the vinyl single and lot of LP vinyl. She is not so well known in France, only with "Oh Happy Days" and " Look what they done to my song" ....This is really a pity, I bought her last CD's directly from USA, because impossible to find it in France. I like her for now 50 years and I will like her till the end.

  19. M.... A....

The Best love song, love Mélanie Kafka .Je vous aime mademoiselle .

    beautiful talent, beautiful woman.

  34. P.... G....

    Wonderful voice. Greatly under-rated...

  35. J.... O....

I like Melanie but this cover is terrible.

  36. R.... L....

Melanie puts her Soul into her music, Love her so much it hurts.

  37. B.... T....

Melanie and Kate Bush must be soul mates , they both manage to rip out feelings of melancholy, ethereal pain, and love spirit at the same time. This is music from the heart. The intro to lay down with the Edwin Hawkins singers, still rings clear all these years later, Magic!!!! Ruby Tuesday is outstanding !!!

  38. B.... C....

You can really hear something of Stevie Nicks in the way the vowels are shaped, and of course that shuddering vibrato. But her voice feels much steadier and easier, and of course less nasal, than Stevie's. Love this

  39. L.... M....

Not Good! Cover! Just Know This Lady has Her Own Voice! Beautiful Voice! Want to Hear Her ,Her Own !
    Words!

  40. V.... D....

    Superbe j adore Véronique 😍😍😍😍😍

  41. V.... D....

    Sublime j adore Véronique

  42. w.... o....

Was that Leon on piano? Melanie's searing voice leaves an indelible imprint on the soul.

  43. H.... G....

Pathetically predictable, to a singers ear.

  44. N.... B....

WOW. Just heard this version. As far as I'm concerned she owns it.

  45. m.... ....

Who is playing the piano ?

    m.... ....

Hay, I think it's Melanie herself.

  46. A.... R....

    Wow! :-o

  47. W.... S....

I loved here Music Then and now❤️

  48. l.... ....

LOVE her voice. So beautiful & soulful... 💜

  49. J.... V....

  50. R.... S....

Melanie makes all her covers, her own.  Her version of California Dreaming is the example that proves the rule.

  51. N.... J....

She sure did jazzy it up a little don't ya think? Her voice sultry and sexy as hell and slowed down the tempo and our Ms. Melaine gives us a one woman show like no other! She owns this and makes it her own as every good artist can so! Is Melanie playing the piano? Quite a talented artist -- and her soul resonates out to ya on a California Dreamin' on such a winter's day!

  52. H.... H....

    Melanious..

  53. d.... R....

    haunting and gorgeous...like Melanie

  54. l.... d....

beautiful , god girl you can sing , love your music and spirit , thank you Melanie for the beautiful and sweeeeeeet music peace and love baby.

  55. w.... m....

Melanie is the Ultimate hippie chick 😊❤

  56. J.... N....

Still after all these years to me Melanie is the Melanie

  57. R.... D....

    love this version

  58. S.... G....

The piano is too heavy. could she do this with a guitar? That could be something even more spontaneous.

  59. R.... B....

Melanie goes magic to a song when she covers it.

  60. A.... P....

    This version is fantastic.
I agree that she can be hit and miss, but she really nails it here.

  61. G.... G....

anyone who doesn't love this version of the song has something seriously wrong with him this is extraordinary

  62. h.... ....

As far as I'm concerned she's every bit as good as Janis! Her style is haunting and true craftsmanship. No matter whose song she's singing she makes it her own! I truly think she was ahead of her time and I go down memory lane every time I hear her amazing voice! She is a true legend!!

    h.... ....

I totally agree. Melanie always made songs her own, particularly her haunting version of Mr Tambourine Man - sheer class!

    h.... ....

Listen to her version of RUBY TUESDAY. Way better than the Stones.

  63. d.... R....

    PERFECT!!

  64. S.... V....

Only heart the manas and papas version, like everyone else... This is something else. More intens - and more pretentions... What you prefer is your choise, but why is this version so unknown??

  65. A.... A....

Sorry, but this is one for the Mamas and the Papas. No offense, just my opinion. And I do respect yours. Btw, nobody does Long, Long Time like Melanie!!! Really.

  66. L.... ....

that is the best rendition of that song i have ever heard! kudos

  67. m.... m....

She's only gone and done it again ,ma

    m.... m....

    What a voice

  68. G.... ....

Until now, I was unaware of Melanie performing this song, also a lifetime favorite of mine (with gratitude also, of course, to The Mamas and the Papas. I grew up with you guys...)!

Thanks for the your effort, Eduardo.

    G.... ....

I have been a major fan since 1970 but never heard this before she is a beautiful lady I love this

  69. .... ....

    amazing.

  70. o.... ....

    I think,she is a female Joe Cocker

  71. G.... G....

This should go down in history as one of the great performances of this great classic.......

    G.... G....

Yes it is really something ! Just love it.

  72. T.... W....

    Gorgeous !
    Jazzy version with a soul.

    T.... W....

    yes exactly!!

  73. B.... N....

Porquè tenias que arruinar un tema tan bonito?

  74. C.... C....

More blues than the original. Good cut.

  75. J.... A....

I'm a Melanie fanatic. But let's face it. Melanie's vocal performances have always been all over the map. Especially in the early years when she was experimenting and trying to find her particular niche. Sometimes it was wonderful. Sometimes it was downright painful. Often it fell somewhere in-between. But whenever I think of a cut that displays Melanie as the powerful, accomplished, masterful singer she always had the potential to be, this version of California Dreamin' comes to mind. Fantastic performance.

    J.... A....

+John Andert I'm interested in seeing the "all over the map" performances. Any links or live performance suggestions to check out? Thanks!

    J.... A....

Got to agree, outstanding version by Melanie!

    J.... A....

She is one of a kind - really fantastic

  76. T.... ....

    Great...

  77. D.... H....

Look what she did to this song, Ma.

  78. G.... G....

Amazing version of a great classic Melanie rocks

  79. B.... I....

Melanie, I hope this comment reaches you. Your vocals are amazing. Your interpretation of CD succeeds the original by far.
It's not only a comment to the 60's era but also a piece of art in its own. Thank you very much.

    B.... I....

Björn Isberg I like her too but nothing beats the original version.

  80. T.... A....

    nice, very nice

    T.... A....

+Terry Anderson Thanks Terry, it's one of my favorite versions of this song

  81. J.... N....

Never understood why this girl didn´tt made it, she was so talented, she had a voice that could cut diamonds to pieces, her voice could have moved mountains and rivers...

    J.... N....

But she did "make it" - she was honored many years in a row as the best female vocalist in 1970s polls, has had many top ten hits and sold millions of records. Her heights may have dipped a lot as she aged, but she continues to write, record, and tour. The present day music/record industry only focuses on youth, yet stellar "greying" artists like her still have a loyal audience, so she indeed is still "making it", albeit on her own terms.

    J.... N....

Agree. I bought several of her LP'S back in the 70's. I still have them all. A beautiful, haunting voice that has no equal. I always loved Melanie.

    J.... N....

Didn't make it? You were not there obviously. She was big. Really big.

    J.... N....

Melanie sang "Birthday of the Sun" at the Woodstock music festival in 1969.

In 1970 she had a Top 10 hit with "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)." A powerful cover of The Rolling Stones' "Ruby Tuesday", and "Peace Will Come (According to Plan)" likewise did well. In 1971 she scored her greatest smash success with the cute, catchy and funny "Brand New Key"; the song peaked at #1 on the Billboard charts for three weeks, sold over three million copies, was featured on the soundtrack of the film Boogie Nights (1997) and has been covered by such artists as Deana Carter, Cher, Rasputina and The Dollyrots (the British comedy folk group The Wurzels had a 1976 #1 UK hit with a parody version of "Brand New Key" called "Combine Harvester".) The follow-up songs "Ring the Living Bell" and "The Nickel Song" were also successful. Melanie was awarded Billboard's #1 Top Female Vocalist in 1972. She had her last Top 40 hit with "Bitter Bad" in 1973. She won a Primetime Emmy Award in 1989 for writing the lyrics to the song "The First Time I Loved Forever" for the TV series Beauty and the Beast (1987).

  82. s.... ....

May be that a better tribute to Mama's and Papa's, i own DID.. I consider sacre this song, and i get 4/4 beat in my blood (but this song, notwistanding all, could be also performed in dissimilar rhythm as for José Feliciano.. but as for casual derivation, not pertinent..).
SO, I HAVE CREATE A GREAT SONG THAT COULD BE IN SAME WAY, RECOLLECTED TO THIS GREAT BEST MAXIMUM SONG.. My song is named "I Open My Eyes And .." (Text 1a : i open the eyes and/ i look for around me/ who don't live anymore/ here, close to me...).. I say it as great melodic author by what i created (i don't feel myself, at now, secondary to what did J. Phillips, the max author,.. i have written 350 songs by notation, many at the melodic top emotive sentimental feeling, all by myself..). Naturally, i say it by musical construction in style.. As for all my best songs, i have not uploaded it.. (.. they belong to my close sentiments ...).. Bye !

    s.... ....

    +sadlymusic huh?

    s.... ....

Melanie - California Dreaming  (MAR lopez Shared on Google+ · 19 minutes ago)

  84. k.... ....

To be honest, I like her voice more when she was younger. After she was 23 or 25 there crept in some artificialness imo.

    k.... ....

+kleermaker1000 Couldn't disagree more. Here earliest recordings are all over the map. Some good, some horrific. And quite often very affected. But she was young and experimenting, which is exactly what a young artist should do. I think she really started to hit here stride with Gather Me and did some of her very best singing from Gather Me through the 80s.

  85. R.... D....

This woman copied the style of Buffy Sainte-Marie. I know because I saw Melanie in concert in 1972. I was there.

    R.... D....

@Ronald Dunwoody You know? You KNOW? How does "I was there" carry your pronouncement out of the humble realm of mere opinion, and elevate it to fact?
I suggest you reconsider your use of the word "know". As Inigo famously said, "I do not think it means what you think it means."

    R.... D....

    @ssppeellll What?

    R.... D....

@Ronald Dunwoody You stated your opinion as fact. You are mis-using the word 'know.' You THINK she copied BSM.
And your having seen her in concert in no way whatsoever gives your opinion more creedence or validity. You don't suddenly become an infallible expert.
Stating one's opinion as fact is detrimental to the pursuit of truth. Its effect is insidious and pervasive. Stating one's opinion as fact is also an act of utter arrogance.

    R.... D....

    +ssppeellll word !

    R.... D....

+ssppeellll Actually, Robert Johnson's response to my comment got me to re-visit this thread. I would edit my previous post to change the word "think". A better choice here would be "feel" or "opine".
Also, I would suggest to the original commenter, who said, "I know because ... I was there" that I'll bet there are other people who were there who would disagree with you. They would have different opinions. Which of you would have the authority to speak your opinions as undeniable fact then?

  86. M.... N....

She was just an opportunist taking advantage of the times to make money and secure some fame. I watched an interview she did a few years ago and now, I won't listen to her music.

    M.... N....

@j miller I wouldn't say that. This woman rose to fame on two ridiculous novelty songs.

    M.... N....

@Ronald Dunwoody R'nR Hall of Fame is just a stupid museum, nothing else and it's definitely not a measure of someone's talent. When it comes to Melanie she isn't the greatest musician in the world for sure and she was famous 50 years ago but today only small group of people know for her and listen her which is evident in small number of you tube views compared to other bands and singers from that era like The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin etc.

    M.... N....

@Ronald Dunwoody RnR is ridiculous in itself and not to be taken seriously. She is a fine, totally confident, unique performer who paid her dues. She captures a particular aspect of the time as an archetype. I know, because I was there.

    M.... N....

    @Mark Nauman If you won't listen to her music anymore why would you Youtube her music? Was it because you felt an overwhelming necessity to post a comment on a video so people would see it and think it was relevant, even though it's only your opinion? (;

    M.... N....

+Ronald Dunwoody Maybe you should stick to what you know, which looking at your YouTube page seems to be an obsession with bra's.
