Me First And The Gimme Gimmes - The Boxer Lyrics

I am just a poor boy though my story's seldom told
I have squandered my resistance for a pocketful of mumbles
Such are promises

All lies and jest
Still the man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest

When I left my home and family
I was no more than a boy
In the company of strangers
In the quiet of the railway station, running scared

Laying low seeking out the poorer quarters where the ragged people go
Looking for the places only they would know

[Chorus:]
La la li
La la la la li la li
La la li
La la la la la la li la la la li

Asking only workman's wages I come looking for a job
But I get no offers
Just a come-on from some bitch on Seventh Avenue

I do declare there were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there, la la la la la la la

[Chorus]

And I'm laying out my winter clothes and wishing I was gone
Going home
Where the New York City winters aren't bleeding me
Leading me going home

In the clearing stands a boxer
And a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders
Of every glove that laid him down or cut him
'Til he cried out in his anger and his shame
I am leaving, I am leaving
But the fighter still remains
La la la la la la la la la la

[Chorus x2]

Yeay! Yeay! Yeay! Ow!

Awesome! I'm so bad at hearing lyrics, but somehow I understand everything Spike sings. Maybe because we're both from Pittsburgh?!?! Lol

That decision for a change in tempo for the very last part just perfectly rounds up one of the best cover versions ever. Epic!
(And if you ask me, they are way more darn true to the original than I'd ever thought possible!)

I think both the original and the rock cover are good because they are both awesome. The original song plays out more like a emotional story of loss. The cover on the other hand plays out as this epic song of battle.

  5. D.... B....

    laaaaaaaaaiiiiiii !!!!!!

  6. d.... ....

This song is perfect to listen to while reading "The Golem and the Jinni". It fits so well I'm sure neither Simon & Garfunkel nor Me First had any idea of it.

  7. A.... ....

An insult to the proper original version.

    A.... ....

    Lol slayed.

    A.... ....

    AvroYork you're an idiot

    A.... ....

We can fight if you wanna keep talking mess about Simon and Garfunkel.

    A.... ....

punk rock baby, your disgust is properly noted and greatly appreciated! Your past is bullshit and your future is evil.

    A.... ....

Marty, you look like me when I was younger. I think I´m you in another time.

  8. D.... R....

I love it how they breathe life into drab songs by Simon & Garfunkel, John Denver and others

  9. S.... B....
