Me First And The Gimme Gimmes - Sunday Morning Coming Down Lyrics
Well I woke up Sunday morning,
With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad,
So I had one more for dessert
Then I fumbled in my closet through my clothes,
An' I washed my face and combed my hair,
Stumbled down the stairs to meet the day
I'd smoked my mind the night before,
With cigarettes and songs that I'd been pickin'
But I lit my first and watched a small kid,
Playing with a can that he was kicking
And I walked across the street,
'n caught the Sunday smell of someone's fried chicken
And it took me back to somethin',
On the Sunday morning sidewalk,
Wishing, Lord, that I was stoned.
'Cos there's something in a Sunday,
That makes a body feel alone.
And there's nothin' short of dyin',
Half as lonesome as the sound,
On the sleepin' city sidewalks:
Sunday mornin' comin' down
In the park I saw a daddy,
With a laughin' little girl that he was swingin'
And I stopped behind a Sunday school,
And listened to the songs that they were singin'
I headed down the street,
And somewhere far away a lonely bell was ringin'
And it echoed through the canyons,
Like the disappearing dreams of yesterday
On the Sunday morning sidewalk,
I'm Wishing, Lord, that I was stoned
'Cos there's something in a Sunday,
That makes a body feel alone
And there's nothin' short of dyin',
Half as lonesome as the sound,
On the sleepin' city sidewalk:
Sunday mornin' comin' down
On the sleepin' city sidewalk:
Sunday mornin' comin' down

On a Sunday morning sidewalk, I'm wishing Lord that I was stoned
esto s bueno.
Talk about a great song to wake up to after a really drunken St Pat's day.
Still can't get over the great guitar work during the choruses. Awesome song, fantastic cover!
I can't stop clicking on these songs. Everytime I say ok, this will be the last one, I say, oh look, there's a version of....
coffeecoffee25 thats been the last two days for me
same here
I have to disagree. The Dynamics between the 1st and 2nd guitar are spot on. At least to my ears anyway.......
Johnny!!
i fucking hate sundays ...
I was born on Sunday and I also hate sunday. It's a very lonely day. I lot of shops and stores are closed that day.
Kris Kristoferson . And you are right!
first of all, this is a kris kristofferson song, cash was covering it himself. anyway, i'm a MF&TGGs fan from the start, but i think this is one of their rare misses. the vocals are fine, but the little reggae thing clashes against the melancholy mood of the song. regular slow/fast punk arrangement woulda been better.
dude...I don't hear double picking and kettle drums
@R.B. Holliday Yeah dude really has no idea what he's saying. This is an amazing cover, one of their best.
AD: Cash Vinyl its Red! Buy it now
great punk version from my favourite Cash sung track, Still Cash makes me first and fat mike look like his bitch.
Awesome Cover.
Agreed; probably the Gimme's finest moment. Awesome vocal from Spike.
Love this rendition.
Heard this on the Tom and Dan Podcast, a Mediocre Time. love it.
lord i'm wishing i was stoned.
is it sunday already?
Excellent rendition of an excellent song.
@analog67 legend has it that he couldn't get anyone to look twice at it and so Kris said fuck it hired a private helicopter and landed on johnny's yard to give hime the lyrics. Don't know how true it is but its a great story. And like they said in The Man That Shot Liberty Valance "When legend becomes fact, print the legend"
SLR Whitestarr borrowed the first few lines of lyrics for their song, 99 Bottles
first sentence of this song is the best hangover line there is.
@topher2327 Exactly, so when I say "in my opinion" don't fucking tell me no.
@Grave187RIP13 Really......grow up. We all have opinions.
@Grave187RIP13 ummmm no
@analog67 Never said it was a JC original. I said it gives him a run for his money.
@Grave187RIP13 - It's actually a Kristofferson song, he wrote and recorded it....Johnny Cash did cover it though.
The original is my favorite song ever.
It's funny that the lyrics fit the punk rock theme of lonely dissociation
This is great. But, the best cover of this that I've heard, IMHO, is by the Mother Hips. Waaaaay different than this, for sure. But I like 'em both.
@MickeRamone Yup
@kalegrimm thanx dean wormer
@crbdudeman Yeah but JC played it.
@Grave187RIP13 Kris Kristofferson a run for his money
I think Kris Kristofferson wrote this song?
@abondonallhope Singer is Spike Slawson From Swinning Utters. I fuckin' love this band, even if they are a little campy. That's kind the point, right. Also, this is a fucking killer kick-ass song, love the Johnny version. "I'm wishing lord that I was stoned"
this maybe the best one they did. rocket man and me and julio are good also
Best cover band in the universe.
i dedicate this song to myself hell who hasnt smoked our mind the night befvoe and been picking songs either playinfg on guitar or listening to music etc.
@lisababy85 yeah, you know just a matter of opinion for some people...
These people are awful. They should be digging ditches
For sure. But all around its a greate song.
There are different ways to do different songs. I just really like me first and the gimme gimmes sound and style. But its not like theye really even give a fuck. They do covers of songs that they like just because they like to do them. But yeah man I feel ya.
Haha and Im glad there are still people on youtube who know what they are talking about.
This song was written by kris kristofferson, Johnny Cash just coverd it.
Haha I love how they do that.
i totally agree
This sounds a lot like the Clash's Police and Thieves. Especially the guitar and bass
hockeyrocks5757 I got police and thieves stuck in my head hearing this song .
it's sort of a tradition for this band...every cover of "x" song they do, they include a reference, riff, verse or something from an unrelated punk song
I think the song is a bit of a miss. I've got MF&TGG's first 3 albums and have seen 'em live, but their style doesn't fit depressing music, imo. I like Cash and Kristofferson alot, and this song is a dirge, wheras the guitar on the verses of this version is almost reggae style (happy music for the most part) which doesn't work. Nice try tho.
Damn, in my opinion this actually gives Johnny Cash a run for his money.
This the Gimmes finest moment.
