McMurtry, James - Copper Canteen Lyrics

Honey don't you be yellin' at me when I'm cleaning my gun
I'll wash the blood of the tailgate when deer season's done
We got one more weekend to go
And I'd like to kill one more doe

So I'll shovel the side walk again cause you're still in a stew
And I bet the bridge tender's widow won't mind that I can't please you
She sure got the run of the men
Out here where the pickin's are thin there's not much to do

I woke up last night
In the grip of a fright
Scared to breathe for I might make a noise
But this life that we crave
So little we save
'tween the grandparent's graves and the grandchildren's toys

We grew up hard
And our children don't know what that means
We turned into our parents before we were out of our teens
Through series of Chevys and Fords
The occasional spin round the floor at the Copper Canteen

Now the bix boxes out on the bypass are shavin us thin
I guess we'll hold on a couple more years till the pension kicks in
Then we'll sell all the stock in the store
Leave only the lock on the door and wonder what then

When I wake up at night
In the grip of a fright
And you hold me so tight to your chest
And your breath on my skin
Still pulls me back in
Till I'm weigthless and then I can rest

So if Monseigneur should pull you aside as you're leavin the church
And I'm out on the ice droppin lines for the walleye and perch
Tell 'em it's not your job to bring me to the fold
And I'd rather stand out in the cold

And honey I know
The woodpile's low and you can't close the flue
So I'll split up a couple more chords 'fore the winter time's through
Hold on to your rosary beads
Leave me to my mischievous deeds like we always do

Captures the mystery and tragedy and magnificence of ordinary life like no other. Thank you, James. You are the man.

  12. W.... S....

Its so hard to make a great song about long love. He is one helluva songwriter!

  13. J.... E....

    One hell of a song.

  14. Z.... M....

"I woke up last night in the grip of a fright scared to breathe for i might make a noise, but this life that we crave, so little we save, between the grandparents graves and the grand children's toys". Good Lord, you don't get lyrics like that very often in this life. Layers of intellectual meaning; so much emotional impact.

    Z.... M....

I liked my own comment. Judge me:)

  15. J.... H....

"We grew up hard and our chldren don't know what that means, we turned into our parents before we were out of our teens"

  16. Z.... M....

Note to pop country music fans: this is what a real musician sounds like without autotune...probably been a while

  17. D.... K....

Brilliant Music ! I've been a fan ever since J Mc M released his 1st album in 1989 ! Last night (09/02/2017), I finally saw him perform 'live' with band (all great musicians) at the bar 'het manuscript' in Ostend/Belgium..! Awesome gig !!!

  18. r.... ....

In a business where so many "stars" are products of a mainstream agenda there are true musicians and songwriters..This is one of them..Had the privilege of seeing him and his exceptional band in Belfast last Monday..Thanks for posting.

  19. J.... H....

What a story teller McMurtry is!! This song is just so damn viscerally powerful as a statement abut the human condition.

  20. i.... ....

what manner of SOB clicked unlike?

    i.... ....

I believe they were expecting EDM.

  21. C.... B....

I've a heart full of joy, he is coming to Dublin (Ireland) in Jan '17, can't wait.......

  22. B.... 6....

    He's so great!!!

  23. M.... A....

A highlight of his Milwaukee 10/2/16 show. I'm from Wisconsin. He's from TX. But, somehow, he let's he know it's ok because we're all in the same boat. And he shaved lol ;)

  24. l.... ....

Raw and real, reminds me of both of my Grandpas, my Dan and my father-in-law--no whining and bustin' ass for a living, walleye, perch fishin' and deer huntin'.

  25. J.... F....

This guy hits the nail on the damn head with every song man...

  26. S.... M....

It seems like JM and I have grown up together, I can still the cowboy extra from Lonesome Dove, and that mini-series came out in 86

  27. K.... H....

I am going to see him in Denver at the bluebird theater this Friday and I can't wait. The first time I saw him I was 10 years old at a small bar in Reno. To this day he still never disappoints.

  28. t.... ....

Dude is so good. Awesome lyrics, so much talent.

  29. C.... F....

Does anyone have a tab they could share (that includes the tuning they used)? Thank you.

  30. S.... C....

Fuck yeah, beautiful son of the land, same thing's got me in tears.

  31. M.... O....

I have not been this affected since i first heard Dylan in 65!

  32. C.... J....

Does anyone know what tuning he's uses?

    C.... J....

    +Conner Jewell He's using DADGAD

    C.... J....

    @ tlevbassism ... That's what I'm thinking too ...

  33. c.... ....

    east canada ?? cash show at my camp ? : }

  34. T.... W....

Is this open G or just drop D?

    T.... W....

+Snakem Possibly double drop D? Where you drop the low and high E's both to D. Might try it later today to see if it makes sense.

    T.... W....

Its definitely drop D but he plays it in a unique way.

  35. C.... N....

He seems to know just what it is and feels like to live out here. Not many of us on the high plains, and most spend our days in a quiet desperation. What a relief to be able to put it into words so artfully and heartfelt.

  36. M.... S....

Wow!  Brutal and beautifully done at the same time.

  37. S.... H....

One damn fine song...excited to enjoy it all (again) at the winery in September.  Let us know if you'd like some hand-delivered and personally-caught lobsters.

  38. J.... M....

One of the most honest songwriters we have today.

  39. p.... e....

He has and it's as great as everyone has commented
Very very very fine and the more you listen the more you love it
    Brilliant playing

  40. T.... A....

Too soon to call this performance --- a masterpiece ?

    I think not.

  41. C.... S....

    So good.

  42. R.... W....

Complicated Game is destined to be a classic...James Mcmurtrys'best yet...he like a fine wine just gets better with age.

  43. J.... T....

Brilliant new album. One of the finest songwriters of all time.

    J.... T....

+John Terry His daddy ain't no slouch with words either.

  44. J.... J....

That 12 string is so sweet ... reminds some of us of Fred Neil and his.
