It's a Mandolin of some sort, A style. Larger than a normal Mandolin though. 

It's called a mandola. This one is made by a great company called Gold Tone.

I have no idea what this song means. Reading the lyrics did nothing. Am I that un-poetic or is this meant to not make sense?

With worship songs I think they always mean different things to different people- this song means a lot to me at the moment, especially the 'find your way back home' and 'you don't have to stand alone' lines, because that's how I feel about my faith at the moment, that I'm beginning to come home and rely on God more. So lyrics affect and touch people differently, or sometimes a song just doesn't touch someone and that's okay, its not that it doesn't make sense or that you're not poetic :)

In addition to the the imagery of the early church, this song calls to mind the path that many believers take. Initially, they are enthusiastic and unafraid of any consequences, but as the years pound away they become timid or start to question things. Pushing against the pillars certainly calls to mind sampson and serves as a reminder that God still wants us to do His work and the final part reminds the listner that if they have been hiding "in the woods" that they need to come home to God, and that those who seek to do you harms (demons? sin?) will find you if you do not.

I don't detect anything here that would qualify as heresy here; it's too vagaue.

There's a lot of references to Samson in this as well: pushing against pillars, lighting foxes tails ablaze, getting smoked out of hiding. I think John's referring to the strength everyone feels as a child: being young and unafraid. Before we all were forced to grow up, become insecure about ourselves, and develop inhibitions. I think he's wondering if he can go back to being young and unafraid, even though he's older and wise to the world: "You gotta find your way back home". That's what it means to me anyway. The inner kid in me loves this song.
