McLean, Don - Circus Song Lyrics

Cotton candy, two for a quarter
See if the fat man can guess your weight
A big stuffed tiger is what I bought her
And I'm going home 'cause it's late

Roller coasters make me dizzy
And cotton candy makes me sick
I wish I had some Bromo fizzy
Now that would do the trick

Everyone knows that the clowns aren't happy
And everyone knows that the people don't care
I wish I could laugh at the way that they're acting
But I'm so sick, I just don't dare to

High wire dancers kick and balance
White silk horses step in time
The tattooed man displays his talents
I'm not the talented kind

I always go to the circus on Sunday
And there I can laugh at the people I see
But when I leave home in the morning on Monday
Everybody laughs at me

I make other people nervous
I guess that's why they laugh at me
But to me my life is a three-ring circus
And I can see it for free

Have you seen my wife Elvira?
She can tame a lion, you know
Well, I once had a bushy mane
But that was so damn long ago

Tight-collared clowns in plastic buildings
Have happy families as their fate
Happy jobs and happy clubs
And happy people they hate

Everyone's juggling and everyone's acting
With smiles of grease paint three feet wide
Everyone's caught on a carousel pony
And one time around is a lifetime ride

    Best song ever!!

  3. A.... ....

Circus is metaphor for a Church in this song. Clown's are symbolic for people who go to Church - Don McLean was surrounded by Churchgoers throughout his childhood

  4. a.... c....

don mc clean  is best composer  of pop music in  the xx century . Bob dylan ist the second  though more prolific .

    A wonderful song..

  8. E.... D....

Don's career was never over... "strummin' my pain with his fingers... killing me softly...". People may search for a reason 'for ending his career'... the real die-hard-fans (like me) still love to see him at work (last year, 2015, Turnhout, Belgium). This 'circus song' is one of my favorites... the music and the lyrics should be on the top-10000000 of all-times... but what's music and poetry this times ? I know and I agree with your arguments... music is what moves you...
Anyway, I like all of you who'll appreciate this song...
Don has more in petto; listen to all his songs as much you can... and enjoy them.
Understand these songs... you will understand the world.
(a suggestment: try to understand the Broadway Musical HAIR".)

    E.... D....

I'm a die-hard-fan. It's hard to take that I can't find here anyone loves him.

  9. g.... ....

Just discovered this song. Don Mclean told a story where Bob Dylan once told him that this song was an inspiration.

  10. H.... ....

once has a bushy mane... loooong ago...LOL

  11. M.... T....

I bought the album on vinyl back in 1970 along with American pie, just recently took it out after a few years of it being hidden away in my collection, what a beautiful album, brings back so many memories of the 70's. What a guy Don is, this song, as with most of his work, paints a beautiful picture in my mind.

  12. K.... ....

"Oh my, what a shame, there is no one to blame,,,"

  13. A.... R....

8565 views for a Mclean song, and 294,468,762 views for a Rihanna song !!! what has gone into you people !!?

  14. R.... P....

This album is a masterpiece. Two of the greatest albums ever made are both titled "Tapestry" (The other being Carole King's) Neither are as well known as they should be.

    R.... P....

Don's Tapestry came out before Carole King's. Both were great albums.

  15. R.... A....

Mcclean the most talented of the pop generation

  16. R.... A....

Mc clean is the most talented guy of that generation

  17. S.... B....

Thanks for this one, not heard it for ages !!

  18. S.... D....

don mclean has the unique ability to make me cry

  19. Z.... C....

i wish this was know at least by 75,000 people... sigh this may sound like its about the circus trust me its a lot more personal then it sounds

  20. C.... G....

Don said in an interview that he didn't know how he wrote his songs, that they came from somewhere but he wasn't sure where. That makes him even more amazing to me.

  21. Z.... C....

it was easy to tell don didn't like the carnies he mentioned them in several songs

  22. S.... ....

Don rocks... This is definitely one of the songs that would be on my life's soundtrack.

  23. C.... G....

Another amazing song from my favorite singer-songwriter, although it makes me happy and sad at the same time. Don's guitar playing is simply beautiful. Many thanks for uploading this!
