McLachlan, Sarah - Song For A Winter's Night Lyrics

[Written and first sung by Gordon Lightfoot in 1975]

The lamp is burnin' low upon my table top
The snow is softly fallin'
The air is still within the silence of my room
I hear your voice softly callin'

If I could only have you near
To breathe a sigh or two
I would be happy just to hold the hands I love
Upon this winter night with you

The smoke is rising in the shadows overhead
My glass is almost empty
I read again between the lines upon the page
The words of love you sent me

If I could know within my heart
That you were lonely too
I would be happy just to hold the hands I love
Upon this winter night with you

The fire is dying now, my lamp is growing dim
The shades of night are liftin'
The mornin' light steals across my windowpane
Where webs of snow are driftin'

If I could only have you near
To breathe a sigh or two
I would be happy just to hold the hands I love
And to be once again with with you
To be once again with with you

I lost my significant other last Feb 6th at 919am. I played this song when he was alive but not sure he heard it. I mostly sang it in my head he had had cancer for over 2 years and We thought he was doing great on his treatments. but then on Jan 2nd of last year he had a seizure, and took him to hospital and they did a brain scan the kidney cancer had spread to his brain. not good. So he went on anti seizure pills and a steroid. and he couldn't drive. he started radiation 5 days later, the tumor had grown in his scull and none operable. that sucked. the radiation treatments made him so tired he slept when he came home for hours. I had to all the house chores cooking cleaning laundry etc. He did help when he was able. he had developed hives from his new cancer drug and was allergic to it so they took him off it after 2 weeks thank goodness!! he became very weak one day and he went to a friends house and I told him not to he was so stubborn and went he sat most of the day no energy. he came home and collapsed and I made a quick supper he ate good. I just let him sleep after food and went about my cat chores and dishes. the next day in the morning he said he thought he had a kidney infection so took him to the ER and they admitted him in 4 hours to a room up stairs in the hospital the brain tumor was giving him a very high fever and the chills. so they turned down the heat and put ice packs on him and gave him tylenol. I hated to see him shiver so much but there really was nothing they could do but try to get the fever down. it finally came down after almost 3 days. on the 4 or 5th day he aged 10 years over night he wasn't my handsome man anymore he was so weak from that horrible brain tumor!!! They said a dr would come and talk to me and my mom and then to richard. not good news and tumor was taking him and the cancer in his lungs was spreading and it's in his lymphnodes. so in other words he's going to die!! They released him to me on hospice on Feb 2nd 2018 he came home to die in my care and he had a bath by hospice and they went into disoriented stage and that was very humbling to see he would play with me and his blankets and finaly that night he went to sleep but on occasion would open his eyes to listen to the voices up above him in heaven.
He was getting ready to pass away but he hung on with oxygen I put on his with the rattling in his lungs is normal and I gave his drugs to keep him comfy and calm. he was in no pain anywhere!! I slept beside him in my recliner and I had to give him his drugs every 2 to 3 hrs did that for 3 days. Finally on the morning of Feb 6th last year he was so quiet in the morning and my cat layed at his feet I think he knew something was happening to Richard and sure enough an hour later he died so peacefully with me in the room just about gone and I looked at his belly and he turned his head slightly to the left and he took 2 shallow breaths and was gone. For some reason I just couldn't look at his face his eyes were shut anyways he died in his sleep. he was a very very private man and they like to go when no people are around. that's my Richard so very private!! He has been cremated and is on my bed he will be burried with me when I die but he may get burried long before me in a small town where my mom grew up in in Nebraska. we had 24 great years together and I wanted to have one last winter night with him but he got sick to fast and that darn tumor I just couldn't do anything to him just hold his hands and kiss him. he could hear me he would moan when I talked to him about his meds. had to reposition his head. god I miss him so very much and my life will never ever be the same without my dear sweet Richard. I did a tribute to him and us in christmas ornaments and I love my little tree with them on it and the lights on!! and I had a banner made for him he did a horse clubs websight and they made a banner for me to have in him memory!!. He knows I am coming up to heaven some day and now I can't wait to get there!!! Richard's up there waiting for me!! then we will be together forever for eternity!!! I and he always loved to walk in the snow in a local park that's why this song means to much and makes me cry it really hits home and he was from Iowa and also lived in Wyoming and he cross country skied. he loved to hunt also and he loved to scoop snow when he wasn't to sick from chemo. he was a big man and had a very broad back and strong legs well up until the chemo pills got into him that went away. he did wat he could do and had to take high blood pressure pills also. that took a lot out of him but we finally got to a gym on a cancer program and that helped a lot!! love you my sweet sweet Richard and I will look for you in heaven!! you will be gone 2 years next month Feb 6th at 9 19 am 2019!! Keep looking for me up there!!

I have Lightfoot's first album and many others. I am just relearning this song and found this great cover. The comments below prove that you can't please everybody. They of course are entitled to dislike it as it is just a matter of taste. Sarah and Gord make Canada proud.

  10. TaterTotsandChocolate

I listen to this and her version of "river" every year. November 1. I'm starting early this year.

  11. mzmiller52

Great, but prefer Ellen Greene's version with the chorus in Washington.

  12. Jen321

Bad spirits disappear. Phony people disappear. Erase from my mind. Energy is being replenished, amen

  13. Jen321

    Excellent storyteller.

  14. Susan Bailey

Second best to Lightfoot's beautiful. Who hasn't loved and lost, and how do you get past, "I read again between the lines upon each page, the words of love you sent me." Heart-rending, for anyone who has lived that. Beautiful at Christmas or all through the year. Gordon paints such pictures in my mind, always has. Sarah does it justice.

    Susan Bailey

Not sure what your comment means, but Lightfoot wrote it, Sarah covered it. Both are great.

  15. Vanessa West

    I love this song!

  16. mobycat

WHy do people think this song has *anything* to do with Christmas? Because it was put on a soundtrack to a Christmas movie?

    mobycat

Uh... her work is NOT copyright-free. Not sure why you think that's the case.

    mobycat

No clue who that is. But if he truly believes that, he ought to get the basics of copyright law correct.

  17. marco brenni

a beautiful cover: your voice is wonderful and very emotional

  18. Cindy

This song is 50 years old. Listen to Gordon Lightfoot’s version from his Gord’s Gold album. Great music is great forever

  19. Kristin Wagar

Gordon Lightfoot"s wrote and sang this song on the album Gord's Gold and it has not been done better yet. Sarah's version is just strange.

  27. Daenerys

This song gives me so much nostalgia because at Christmas my mum would always play this album on our CD stereo system. Can't believe this song is 22 years old.

    mobycat

Try 50 years old. This *version* is 22 years old (or it was when you wrote your comment. :D )

  28. Portia Lazar

    This is a Beautiful song!

  29. Terry

    😍😍😍

  30. Crown Z's Place

How can you people say that this is a crapy cover. Man I get it, no one on here has been thinking of some one that they've lost or longed for in the winter time? Wow, I'm a rare breed. Some just haven't lived long enough, or suffered. Sad really. Anyway the song's the bomb.

    Laura Powell

Yeah it is the bomb by Gordon Lightfoot she moans a lot of her stuff , this included .

  31. Shauna
