McKennitt, Loreena - The Gates Of Istanbul Lyrics

See there, past that far-off hill
A tower held in the sky
Hear there, in that dark blue night
The music calling us home

See there, in that far-off field
Flowers turned to the sky
Feel there, in that dark blue night
The music calling us home

Stars may always guide our way,
From desert sands where winds blow harsh and long
But here's where our hearts will pray
And all our loves will slumber with a song

Stars may always guide our way,
From desert sands where the winds blow harsh and long
But here's where our hearts will pray
And all our loves will slumber with a song

So now, if our hearts be true
And like a pool of truth reflect the sun
We will find right honour there
And keep us safe and lead us from all harm

Then come love, let us dance all night
Until birds they waken at the dawn
Then come love, let us sing all night
And all our loves will slumber with a song

Then come love, let us dance all night
Until birds they waken at the dawn
Then come love, let us sing all night
And all our loves will slumber with a song

    Necip Fazıl Kısakürek

    Ana Sayfa İstanbul Rehberi İstanbul Şiirleri

    Ruhumu eritip de kalıpta dondurmuşlar;
    Onu İstanbul diye toprağa kondurmuşlar.
    İçimde tüten bir şey; hava, renk, eda, iklim;
    O benim, zaman, mekan aşıp geçmiş sevgilim.
    Çiçeği altın yaldız, suyu telli pulludur;
    Ay ve güneş ezelden iki İstanbulludur.
    Denizle toprak, yalnız onda ermiş visale,
    Ve kavuşmuş rüyalar, onda, onda misale.

    İstanbul benim canım;
    Vatanım da vatanım...
    İstanbul,
    İstanbul...

    Tarihin gözleri var, surlarda delik delik;
    Servi, endamlı servi, ahirete perdelik...
    Bulutta şaha kalkmış Fatih`ten kalma kır at;
    Pırlantadan kubbeler, belki bir milyar kırat...
    Şahadet parmağıdır göğe doğru minare;
    Her nakışta o mana: Öleceğiz ne çare? ..
    Hayattan canlı ölüm, günahtan baskın rahmet;
    Beyoğlu tepinirken ağlar Karacaahmet...

    O manayı bul da bul!
    İlle İstanbul`da bul!
    İstanbul,
    İstanbul...

    Boğaz gümüş bir mangal, kaynatır serinliği;
    Çamlıca`da, yerdedir göklerin derinliği.
    Oynak sular yalının alt katına misafir;
    Yeni dünyadan mahzun, resimde eski sefir.
    Her akşam camlarında yangın çıkan Üsküdar,
    Perili ahşap konak, koca bir şehir kadar...
    Bir ses, bilemem tanbur gibi mi, ud gibi mi?
    Cumbalı odalarda inletir ` Katibim`i...

    Kadını keskin bıçak,
    Taze kan gibi sıcak.
    İstanbul,
    İstanbul...

    Yedi tepe üstünde zaman bir gergef işler!
    Yedi renk, yedi sesten sayısız belirişler...
    Eyüp öksüz, Kadıköy süslü, Moda kurumlu,
    Adada rüzgar, uçan eteklerden sorumlu.
    Her şafak Hisarlarda oklar çıkar yayından
    Hala çığlıklar gelir Topkapı Sarayından.
    Ana gibi yar olmaz, İstanbul gibi diyar;
    Güleni şöyle dursun, ağlayanı bahtiyar...

    Gecesi sünbül kokan
    Türkçesi bülbül kokan,
    İstanbul,
    İstanbul...

    I met Loreena McKennitt a year ago. She was at a function commemorating the Battle of Britain as she is an Honorary Colonel in the Canadian Air Force. I was at the venue the day before the event and only found out during the ceremony that she was there the day before. I was so upset I didn't notice her. I did meet her after the ceremony the following day and wanted to tell her that both of my children were born hearing the sound of her voice. I was so emotional when I met her I couldn't speak for fear of bursting into tears. I simply said I love your music and gave her a hug. The power of music....

    musical roses

    I'd be the same way if I ever met her. She might be shocked to know that her music would often be played at BDSM clubs.

    This song could be perfect for a Game of Thrones episode -or maybe the instrumental version (which doesn't exist) during closing credits- I don't know but I always associate this kind of music to the show, especially with Daenerys and her army travelling through the deserts and conquering new cities. . .Awesome composition Loreena, I still waiting new material!

    Bonn Afide

    You're supposed to associate it (GOT) with the Near East. I think that might have been GRRM's intention. He is covering Western Civilization. Jon is set in Western Europe, while Dany is set in Egypt/Middle East/Byzantium. Valyria might be associated with Greco-Roman culture. Yi Ti is Asia/China. Sothoryos is Africa south of the Sahara.

    I'm born in Greece and still live there (of course). I still have memories of me father playing Greek/Turkish folk music (rebetiko) at home, whenever we'd invite friends, and this party went on until 5 o'clock in the morning.
    As a young girl, I was really inclined to that music, because of me father. He had samples of about 30 GB length songs on his computer from all around the world. But above all, he made me fall in love with Eastern music, and Loreena of course. She's ,y greatest inspiration into music

    Actually Classical Ottoman music has Byzantine origins.I mean culture and civilization is like a snow ball that groves up by rolling.Every old nation gives its culture as a heritage to the new one.And the new civilization uses and develops the old one.That's why it's very useless and pointless to discuss Constantinapole or Istanbul.Meanwhile Kisses and greetings from Turkey ISTANBUL :)))))))

    Mary Halloumis,your ancesters already tried that sweety.ask them how it ended.

    gul alatas

    @giwta peppe if you study a little bit history,u knew that turks were in that area long before Byzantine and Troy.as a race,turks goes back 15 thousand years in that area along with Anatolia which was an ancient name of Turkey.you guys have to stop pissing compatition and get use to with the facts that lands are ours.and we dont tolerate invasions from anyone.ask your ancestor how it ende for them when they tried that in Turkey and Cyprus.Byzantium was barely called a civilization because of its' size and didnt leave much behind compare with ottoman empire.names falls along with cities and countries.America doesnt call America too.in reality,that land called Polinasia and belongs to native indians.Scotland was a home for vikings..but time past and names changed.in some lands,owners changed.thats the fact of the life.if you guys have a trouble about getting along with the reality,i call it pathetic.get back to the real world for your own sake.

  96. RESPEKT

    Before the Turks conquered Constantinople and named it Istanbul, the crusades invaded, plundered and ruined the city. Read Umberto Eco`s Baudolino, you will learn it from a western writer himself, maybe it will ease your pain to lose it to Turks and it is certainly better hearing it from him than to hear from a Turkish woman who knows more than you about your history. Get an education, it is the best cure for your hatred  against the Turks!

    john mcewen

    It s a bit more complicated than that. The Crusaders were invited by a Byzantine fact to take Constantinople. As it was many crusaders refused to join the attack on the city. history is never that simple. By the Ottomans showed up the city was only a ghost of what it had been. It is always what ifs. The entire Muslim expansion would have probably failed if the Persians and Byzantines had not fought each other into the ground.

    Mind Kitchen

    Turks didn't name it Istanbul. Istanbul is way older and actual version is : "Is tin poli" means "Going to Citycentre" in romaic language.
