McGuire, Barry - Greenback Dollar Lyrics

Well some people say that I'm a no 'count. Others say I'm no good
I'm just a natural-born travelin' man, doin' what I think I should
Doin' what I think I should

And I don't care about a greenback dollar, spend it as fast as I can
For a wailin' song and a good guitar, the only things that I understand
Oh yeah, the only things that I understand

When I was a little baby, my momma told me, "Son,
Go where you will and grow to be a man. Yeah sing what has to be sung
I want you do what has to be done"

I don't care about a greenback dollar, spend it as fast as I can
For a wailin' song and a good guitar, the only things that I understand
Oh yeah, the only things that I understand

Well now, now that I'm a grown man, I've traveled here and there
You know a bottle of brandy and a good guitar are the only things I care
The only things I care

I don't care about a greenback dollar, spend it as fast as I can
For a wailin' song and a good guitar, the only things that I understand
Hear me now, the only things that I understand

    Always love a 12-string guitar!

On a Kingston Trio retrospective DVD Barry said that he got together with Hoyt Axton in a laundromat and showed this song to him. Ken Ramsey had started the song and that is where Barry had first heard the unfinished song. Barry said that he and Hoyt put some verses together for this song and finished it. So I always give credit to Barry McGuire for getting this song out there to where the Kingston Trio eventually had a monster hit with it. Thanks, Ken, Hoyt, and Barry.
