McGraw, Tim - Number 37405 Lyrics

Oh, he listens to the countdown every Sunday morning
From a cold solitary prison cell
And the music from his radio is like freedom down a dirt road
Makes that eight by ten a brighter hell

Before he started doing all the hard time that he's doing
He was singing in them honky-tonks and dives
He dreamed of being somebody, now he's number 37405

Well she used to come and see him every other weekend
And bring him all the news from way back home
It's been two birthdays since he's kissed her,
Five seconds since he's missed her
Now the perfume on those letters ain't that strong

He's got too much time to think about the night he had too much to drink
And all his buddies, they begged him not to drive
Mr. Life of the Party is now number 37405

Old judge on the bench said, "Son, your crime's got consequences."
It's what he told him fifteen years ago
He took a life and that's a fact, he'd give his own to give it back
Today's the day he finally gets parole

He turns in them prison clothes, and stands there at the fork in the road
And mama prays and waits while he decides
And the angels close their eyes...

Listens to the birds sing on a perfect autumn morning
Just down the road rings an old church bell

Brenden Meints False. Drinking and driving can kill people. In the song, he accidentally killed someone because he was drunk.

you my friend are a fucking idiot if your dumb enough to drink and drive you should get more than jail time it should be punishable by death if you injure someone while your drunk and driving to many people are killed because of dumb fucks drinking and driving

For the families that had someone die at the hands of a drunk driver? Families that had a child that will never walk again? You gonna say the great ole system is wrong then? If you're old enough to drink, get drunk, and drive, you're old enough to know better and old enough to pay the price. Doesn't matter how old you are. 4 or 40, you hurt my boy I'm getting my payback. May not be right by the law, but it's right by me. You don't want your kids in trouble, do a better job as a parent.

Pick and choose your friends wisely these days people. does not take much for a young man or woman to get tied up in this "Great Ole' System", problem is getting out of it. Leave minors alone big boys. Pick on people your own size and let parents deal with the rest instead of draining families of money too. Costs Mom and Dad, Single Dad, Single Mom to much momey. Where do them $200+ fines go to anyway that parents have to pay for a child caught with tobacco? Crooked mayors or politicians?

Our Marine Special Ops Vet, who suffers badly from acute combat induced PTSD, did 200+ combat missions in Afghanistan. The trauma to his precious soul has manifested itself in many poor decisions, substance abuse, and 4 1/2 months confinement in the Vista, CA "vet treatment module'. The love of his life broke up with him one week before he was let out of incarceration. He suffers from depression, intense anger, and has suicidal ideations. This song takes me back to when the phone would ring and it would be the auto jail recording. Those conversations were incredibly painful as many others have been when he has discussed what he did, what he saw, what he experienced. We have millions of wonderful Americans locked behind bars because of mental health and substance abuse problems. This system does not work, it's not a deterrent, it's cruel, and hideously expensive. To those who feel the need for revenge, I understand why but that is not how an advanced, civil and compassionate society should be. It's way, way past time for us to abolish a system built on punishment and revenge and replace it with one with adequate resources to treat and rehabilitate. Pray hard for moments of peace and joy for those behind bars.
