McCall, C. W. - Mountains On My Mind Lyrics

Rollin' down the runway
Thinkin' 'bout the one-way of my life
With another cup of coffee
And another lonesome city far behind

This old 747 will be flyin' over Heaven
One more time
And the tears begin to fallin'
When I think about the mountains on my mind

But now the skies above are sunny
And it's time to say it's funny
How I never thought I'd ever fly this high
But maybe someday when it's over
When I'm just a little older
I can go back to the mountains on my mind

Flyin' through the night time
To a far off city skyline in the dawn
And a thousand lights below me
Are like fireflies tryin' to tell me that I'm wrong

So I try to find a reason
To forget the changin' seasons in my mind
But the winds of time are blowin'
And I've gotta go on knowin' that I tried

'Cause now I hear a different drummer
And I've used up all my summers
Chasin' rainbows that I really didn't wanna find
But maybe someday when it's over
When I'm just a little older
I can go back to the mountains on my mind

I recited the words of this song as Iwatched the lights of London below me disappear long ago .

For all the fun CW McCall and the gang must have had doing some of their crazy songs, this one still gets me. Although I grew up in flatland, MN (you cannot get any flatter than the Red River Valley!), once I visited the mountains, and met some of the people there, this song absolutely tugs at my heart. The orchestration is second-to-none, and this was an amazing song to close an album with! I was just debating with one of my musician friends, and he challenged us to find a more melancholy artist than Jackson Browne. I submitted this one. As far as I'm concerned, I win.

One of the best songs CW McCall ever recorded.....

I'm a Colorado native. There's been a number of extend business trips where I have looked out of the airplane window thinking about this song. Work and other trips have taken me almost litteraly around the world. Each time I have come back to CO. To the mountains on my mind.

When I was a pilot I did fly off through the nighttime to far off city skylines and the lights below me did look like fireflies. And now it is over and I am a little older and I have gone back to the mountains on my mind. I live in Colorado and, thank God, it all went pretty much like this song.

This sounds just like it did on my old record player!

    San Juan Odyssey...
The Indian called this land Uncompahgre, and the snow covered peaks were great spirits, to be worshiped, and feared, and loved... the spirits were very old, and they had fought many wars with the eternal winds, and the ageless rivers of ice, but still they remained, awesome, alive, and hauntingly beautiful... these were no mere hills... these were the towering, battle scarred summits of the San Juan.

Bill summed it all up real good!

I have never seen the mountains around Ouray CO. I have heard that they have a special feel to them. My father found that feeling in the desert of West Texas. He lived and loved that area for 57 years.
