Mazzy Star - Free Lyrics

I fell asleep in the silence
Before the street fights the fire

Free in the world that you've given
Lay in the sound
The water still calls
Still calls

Afraid of the dark that surrounds me
Hide in the dirt of the ground
Free in the wind that surrounds me
I'm not afraid to sleep in the night
Not afraid
To sleep in the night

Free like a bird of the holders
Holding the wake of the sun
I know the road that you send me
I know the way it leads to home

Real like the bones in my body
Real like the flesh that covers the grave
It's real
Like the flesh
That covers
The grave

Wait for the guards that you send me
Before I'll show myself
Wait for the storm
That comes to me
Maybe I'll just change my mind

Plea for the will of forgiveness
I'm not afraid to say I was wrong
I was wrong
Maybe I won't
So long
So long

Learn what? Your interpretation of the universe, I hope never. The great thing is, we can all create or believe our own version...

I'm jealous - I checked their tour dates and it looks like you'll be seeing a few other good acts along with them - enjoy!

  18. b.... ....

Can't wait to see them in June!

@paperbacklou Re.Opal:Their album Happy Nightmare Baby has 3 songs credited solely to Dave&6 credited to David Roback&Kendra Smith, both. In that case,it is hard to know who wrote what.I recall Mazzy interviews where Dave said he used to write more lyrics(he even used to sometimes sing)prior to Mazzy, but he was so impressed with lyrics Hope was writing,it became her job, with only rare exceptions, apparently.I'm glad Dave didn't give Hope guitar duties too,as I love his playing, especially slide!

  20. H.... ....

@paperbacklou Dave&Hope have both stated Hope's Mazzy's lyric writer, with rare exceptions.e.g. Dave said there's 1 song on Among my Swan where he wrote some lyrics. Many Mazzy songs sound as if Hope wrote them from a man's viewpoint, the way a female novelist writes male characters' points of view. Halah's a good example "you believe you are a woman&that I am someone elses man".Lots of Hope's songs(including her W.I. ones)are sensitive songs about women, but I think she's "novelist", not lesbian!

  21. H.... ....

@paperbacklou Where does the myth come from claiming Roback wrote many Mazzy songs(alone)? I read this on some blog recently too. It's not true. Aside from covers the band did of other artists' songs,if you check writing credits, all other Mazzy songs are credited to Sandoval & Roback both. Only one, Ghost Highway, is credited solely to Roback. Interviews&articles confirm David writes most instrumentation, while Hope writes almost all lyrics&vocal melodies. But I love David's contribution too!

Hope reportedly not only writes almost all Mazzy lyrics, but writes her own vocal melodies too. I think Hope has a rare genius for writing melancholy-tinged melodies that can paradoxically induce mostly bliss, rather than sadness, in listeners! The melody of "Free" is a good example. It's not that easy to consistently write melodies that move listeners emotionally. Few songwriters have such creative ability. People say Paul McCartney's a melodic genius. Well, I say Hope is too!

  24. a.... ....

this sounds so more country than folk. Kind of like country you'd hear in a bar. And when you look her up she's classified as folk :/ her songs into dust and five string senrenade sound more folk....

  25. S.... ....

@PAPALO74 As long as you do the light thing and be faithful then:P

  26. H.... ....

Hope likes water images in her songs. She has at least 9 songs that refer to water, rivers, lakes,or ocean/sea, plus several others that speak of rain.Stars in the sky&moonlight make multiple appearances too.I love the melody of "Free". It has the line "The water still calls, still calls". The song that first endeared me to Mazzy Star's music was "Bells Ring". Besides its beautiful melody sung so hauntingly, its mysterious water imagery resonated.Like Hope, I have an affinity for water too!

  27. 5.... ....

I love her voice. What an underrated song. What an underrated band.

  28. C.... ....

The song was a traveling very far away do you think he can fly

  29. L.... M....

i feel like im foating on air when i hear this.. truley blissful!

  30. T.... ....

    blue flower is my fav

  31. t.... ....

    timm9: Wow... that's a tough one.

    I have 3 favorites:
"Asleep From Day" (the one Hope did w/ Chemical Brothers)
"Into Dust" (from "So Tonight That I Might See")
"Still Cold" (from "Among My Swan")

I don't think Mazzy Star ever played "Still Cold" live although I think it would have sounded awesome. The guitar solo on that one (even though it's short) just plays right to my soul! It just comes in at exactly the right moment and kicks just the right amount of ass!!

  32. t.... ....

    What was her best song?

    t.... ....

    timm9 into dust

    t.... ....

MrDLOC11 no Fade Into You is, but Into Dust is one of the best too.

  33. W.... ....

I never heard of this group until I stumbled across it on a webpage. WOW! This is something extraordinary!
