Mayfield, Curtis - To Be Invisible Lyrics
To be invisible
Will be my claim to fame
A man with no name
That way, I won't have to feel the pain
Just a plain old human being
Today, don't mean a thing
In a world that's so mean
A world that seems not for me
So privately, I'll be invisible
That way, I won't have to explain a thing, if you know what I mean
I won't even have to be here, on the scene
It's so ridiculous
Will go right on through, right on through me
To have missed
All the things that hurt your soul
No one would ever know
They'd never know
Life so preciously
Just don't seem to be
As free as they claim freedom to be
Things are going fast
To have found that all is in the past
To have to take what you can get
Sure can make a heart upset
Inconspicuous
I must behave myself
For somebody else
Who may have a little fame, fortune and wealth
It's so ridiculous
But the strife and the bliss
Will go right on through, right on through me
To have missed
A world that seems not for me
So privately, I'll be invisible
That way, I won't have to explain a thing, if you know what I mean
I won't even have to be here, on the scene
It's so ridiculous
But the strife and the bliss
Will go right on through, right on through me
To have missed
All the things that hurt your soul
No one would ever know
They'd never know
Life so preciously
Just don't seem to me
As free as they claim freedom to be
Things are going fast
To have found that all is in the past
To have to take what you can get
Sure can make a heart upset
So I'll be invisible
Invisible

To Be Invisible Something We As Black People's Should Think About Living In America A Country That So Mean A Country That Peace Want Stand Still For You And I To Be Invisible Now They Are Shooting US In Our Own Home To Be Invisible.
whether Gladys Knight or Curtis this song touches the soul in ways you couldn't comprehend. His lyrics are so deep. But when Gladys sang it she put a whole new perspective on it.
When you listen to both versions, you see the situation from both the man and the woman's perspective. If we put it in perspective of the movie Claudine, then it REALLY all makes sense to hear both versions. You get not only Claudine's perspective; but Rupert's as well.
Ilove his voice
He was gifted
Imiss him
He was a genius
He was so underrated
Charlie Wilson
Like all Curtis Mayfield's greatest songs, I interpret this one to also be about an uncaring gov't that is not "for the people"...a gov't to whom we are still invisible.

This song saved my life. Kwy
Curtis Mayfield. Thank you . You my friend are pure class.
In these days where social media rules, this song takes on new meaning. If one is not on any major social media platform, one is "invisible" to most people. For us who value privacy, who want no part of this social media circus, it's never been easier "To Be Invisible." Just opt out of participating.
To set the record straight--Curtis wrote the song and gave it to Gladys for her movie---She added her soulful voice--Curtis was more of a folks song style--Been a Curtis Mayfield and Impressions fan since 1960--My favorite group.

CURTIS, Genius Songwriter, i Iinstrumentalist & Singer
To Be Invisible...
I do understand what he saying. Deep.
This is a toss up. Gladys and Curtis nailed it.
true song
When Curtis wrote this he was speaking for a 10 year old girl growing up in the projects of Philly.... She's not invisible anymore Curtis, Thank you and God Bless your soul for I know you are flying with the angels!
Really? I have loved this song for the past 30 years and know all the lyrics... i never managed to locate the meaning or why he wrote it... thanks
+schmatever.... Oh yes. Listen closely! Anyone child who ever felt they didn't fit in or the things society requires you do to fit in... Yes, that was my interpretation........ Love it love it!
@DN JAZZ No doubt you totally relate. Have been reading Curtis' new biog written by his son. I actually believe the lyrics mainly refer to growing up in grinding poverty which Curtis did. I'm pretty sure that this is what he's talking about. But knowing him, he would probably totally emphathise with you too.
@schmatever, Those lyrics are so powerful. I agree with you in regards to growing up in poverty however, for me he spoke directly to the "so called" standards required to be a part of society. I'll be 58 the end of this month and still refuse to conform... I'm not selling my soul to fit into what they deem acceptable! My belief is that there is some beauty in all things, everyone deserves to be loved and accepted for who they are and it shouldn't come with a price tag! I'm going to purchase his son's bio, I'm certain it's deep! Love this man!..... We people, who are darker than blue, are you going to hang around and let what others say come true! Whew, the brother was way ahead of his time.
WOW. My soul weeps because of how true this is. What a genius. Thank you Curtis.
THE REAL DEAL CURTIS MAY-FIELD.....
bpm of this song?? I'm getting 113??
Curtis Mayfield & his team, made some timeless music. He shared a gift with us & we realize it through the music he made...
maloyaable true. He blessed us with all his knowledge through music.
R.I.P Curtis Mayfield and enjoy it for eternity.
This song is so defining. It touches the depth of my heart. I miss brother Curtis too.
Means so very much to me!
Curtis sure gets into the emotions....
i dont think we actually paid attention to the message....this is a message of wel fare tearing down the black home...him having to not be on the scene was something they thought was better when the state stepped inn...not knowing they had planned to turn his sister against him.
What a beautiful and poignant song. Curtis Mayfield was a genius. Miss him so much.
One of the greats! .. Badly underrated
Thanks. From me. A. Very. Spiritual. Man.
I can't make up my mind if I like it better by him or Gladys Knight. Go head Curtis
Well I'll make up your mind for you . You like Curtis version more because he has the right temperament for this song . Gladys was "sangin" but Curtis was feeling .
yescarycan Well put!!
I AM .... N---A---U---T---I---L---U---S HIGH S--O--C---I---E---T--Y !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A-B-B-A !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AMEN.
Really true and very deep!
So true. It's so ridiculous. And we're always the humble ones
Still baffled at how he not only came up with this stuff, but managed to put it all together in such a cohesive way. A genius.
you have to have been there to know...right after nam...make love not war...America was still screwed up...cultural divide...as well as class....the big shots were full of it...Nixon was pres....I was stoned ands really lost(don't do drugs) AND THAT WAS THE FEEL OF THINGS....TO UNSEEN...BUT PRESENT....of a brain.
