Mayfield, Curtis - Miss Black America Lyrics

"Hello Daddy"
"Hello baby, how is my love child?"
"Fine"
"Tell me, of all your dreams, what most do you hope to be when you become a big girl?"
"Daddy, I would like to be Miss Black America"

Hurringly stepping so proud
Mother nature's only god child
Society salutes you today
And we'd like to say

God bless Miss Black America
Watch over Miss Black America
She cried tears of success
We wish her long happiness
Miss Black America

Sisters we're all so very proud
Of that natural look we see among the crowd
World wide admiration
From nation to nation

They love you Miss Black America
We love you too Miss Black America
You're such wonderful people
And so beautifully equal
Miss Black America

A culture noone can deny
If a young child should ask
Then tell them why
They should not be ashamed
Of their past, just explain

The true mother is Black America
None other than Miss Black America
She cried tears of success
We wish her long happiness
Miss Black America
Miss Black America
We're so proud of you
Miss Black America

Yeah, who played bass on this song? That bass line is awesome! Carol Kaye maybe?

    J.... C....

Definitely a great bass groove, especially towards the end of the song the bassist really lets loose.

This is the personnel listed for the album: Leonard Druss, John Howell, Harold Lepp, Loren Binford, Clifford Davis, Patrick Ferreri, Richard Single, Rudolph Stauber, Donald Simmons, Robert Lewis, Harold Dessent, Ronald Kolber, Harold Klatz, John Ross, Sol Bobrob, Sam Heiman, Elliot Golub, Henry Gibson, Robert Sims, Gary Slabo, Philip Upchurch...

Who plays what instrument, I couldn't tell you. Record companies back in the day had a habit of not crediting the backing band for their recordings. Of these names, I know Phil Upchurch has done some session work as a bassist, but he's predominately a guitar player. It could be him on bass on this track, but it's probably one of these other people. You also have Henry Gibson, the great percussionist who played with Mayfield, Donny Hathaway, Earth Wind & Fire, Staple Singers and many, many more.

Carole Kaye is one of the best, but she usually had a more reserved style than whoever is playing bass on this track.

I'm white, as ya can tell, but god-damn, this song is still a beauty. Hell, scratch that - this entire album is a tour-de-force of amazing music. Curtis, my man, it's a shame ya had to go so soon. Peace and <3 to all who stumble accross this song!

    S.... ....

rest assured i suck at music

    S.... ....

"I'm white but I like a song by a black man." Some originality please. We don't need you to confirm that white and black people can enjoy the same music.

    S.... ....

In a way, doing that is bit racist, emphasizing that difference between black and white. Good intentons, poor execution.

    S.... ....

Tomek Boguszewicz - Do you mean that "Harrican's" post was "a bit racist", or that Bro. Mayfield's SONG was "a bit racists"? I'm not sure when people are going to come to an agreement that there actually IS A DIFFERENCE between being "racISTS" and making a racIAL comment....

The USofA is somewhat of a unique country in that not only are most of our citizens from ALL races & cultures of the world, but also the actual LAND has areas similar to all other parts of the world as well! In THIS country, ACKNOWLEDGING the RICHNESS, GREATNESS, CONTRIBUTION to making this nation's successes made by people/humans according to our race or culture IS a "thing" we do primarily because there have been those who have denegrated, demeaned, discriminated against and attempt (ed) to exterminate citizens who DON'T "look like themselves" based solely on one's race = RACIST. Now, because those people and their ideologies persist to exist in this nation, the only way to "combat" that is to CONTINUE..... continue to live and exist!!! Part of fighting against those who will try to feed you lies about yourself is to seek out and focus on the TRUTH of who you & your folk are; develop, verbalize and publicize appreciation for who you are and answer back BOLDLY when someone attempts to "put you down", discount, dominate or discriminate against you = being RACIAL.

The motto of the USofA is Latin: "e plurubus unum" = Out of many, One which means to me that we come from many different ancestries (God/Allah did NOT make humans all look alike any more than He made His other creations all look exactly like!) but we can still live, walk in a similar direction and grow together. My choice, and the choice of others to join in with me in showing appreciation to God/Allah for blessing me by making me as I am is NOT being racist at all. Ignoring what the Creator has made each of us to be is AN INSULT to God!!

    S.... ....

    @Tomasz Boguszewicz
Thats whats great in this country the FREEDOM OF SPEECH .
You may not agree with what he said or how he said it but its his freedom to say it . plus im sure you knew what he meant .
