Mavis Staples - Wade In The Water Lyrics

[Chorus:]
Wade in the water
Wade in the water
Children wade in the water, God's gonna trouble the water

Who's that young girl dressed in red
Wade in the water
Must be the children that Moses left
And God's gonna trouble the water

[Chorus]

Who's that young girl dressed in white
Wade in the water
Must be the children of Israeli
God's gonna trouble the water

[Chorus]

Who's that young girl dressed in blue
Wade in the water
Must be children coming true
And God's gonna trouble the water

[Chorus]

If you don't believe I did begin to wade in the water
Just see the Holy Ghost looking for me
God's gonna trouble the water

[Chorus]

When Harriet Tubman's Underground Railroad was going to go, the slaves would sing different songs to signal to meet somewhere at someplace. This was one of them, so yeah :D

Originally it’s about the Pool of Bethesda. How Jesus healed a crippled man who had laid 38 years waiting to enter the healing pool when an Angel of God would “trouble”, or stir up, the water, but could never crawl in by himself. Jesus asked him if he even wanted to be healed.
    John 2:5-9
The lyrics changed during the Underground Railroad of the 1860s to secretly instruct runaways in how to escape. References to the Children of the Israelites, note God freeing the Hebrew slaves from Egypt. This spiritual is as old as African American slavery, with official lyrics published in 1901. We will all need these instructions one day.
