Mathis, Johnny - Stardust Lyrics
And now the purple dusk of twilight time
Steals across the meadows of my heart
High up in the sky the little stars climb
Always reminding me that we're apart
You wander down the lane and far away
Love is now the stardust of yesterday
The music of the years gone by
Sometimes I wonder why I spend
The lonely night dreaming of a song
The melody haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you
When our love was new
And each kiss an inspiration
But that was long ago
Now my consolation
Beside a garden wall
When stars are bright
You are in my arms
The nightingale tells his fairy tale
A paradise where roses bloom
Though I dream in vain
In my heart it will remain
My stardust melody
The memory of love's refrain

One of my favorite songs by Johnny Mathis
Magnificent arrangement from the legendary Gene Page.
I remember listening to this great song on a one-time legendary MOR station in Phoenix, AZ KOY AM 55 , Thanks for posting this classic.
First time I heard this I was driving from so Texas to Louisiana. A Catholic station in Corpus Christi played it...mesmerized me. No one sings it better than Johnny did.
this song tears me up like a ragged quilt!!! his voice is mezzmerizing!!
With all the due respect in the universe for Not King Cole this version by Johnny Mathis will always to me be the very best by millions of years.
Greatest version
Nat King Cole NUMBER 0NE!!!
You mean number ZER0
Now Children, opinions are like noses. Everybody has one. Can't we love both? I love pizza but I also love steak and potatoes. Love, Bossy Mom.
How can you listen today's crap after hearing this amazing song!
Exactly
Poolie Glad to know I'm not alone. I get stuck normally in the 60s, 70s, 80s but I am always open to great lyrics and melodies. I wish you great listenings!
Thanks, You too!
No one sings like Johnny Mathis , as per Ronny D. Frans hubby
I'm an avid fan of this extra ordinary singer since 1960. I have memorized most of his rendered songs , in his style. Awesome singer of all times.
This was my parents love music, too!!!
Obviously the best version
Uno puede sentirse afortunado de escuchar una y cientos de veces tan bella cancion, acaso una de las cien mejores de todos los tiempos.
Strange how everyone here act as if Nat King Cole hasn't done a rendition.
This one is still better in my opinion
I love this song.. It's done by the right voice.. I never get tired of listening to this beautiful song.. Johnny's voice is magic with Stardust. Every song he sings is breathtaking.
so dreamy
Maravilloso e inolvidable tema interpretado por este gran cantante, me encanta. Muchas gracias.
Beautiful Song
Fantastically Romantic

Hands Down The Best ever version of this song WOW Mr,Mathis you are amazing.
I've been your fan from the early 60's . Thank You for being in my generation
Yes, this song lives in my heart and just will not die
Best interpretation of ths very beautiful song up to me
And now the purple dusk of twilight time
Steals across the meadows of my heart
High up in the sky the little stars climb
Always reminding me that were apart
You wander down the lane and far away
Leaving me a song that will not die
Love is now the stardust of yesterday
The music of the years gone by
Sometimes I wonder, why I spend
The lonely nights, dreaming of a song
The melody haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you
When our love was new
And each kiss an inspiration
But that was long ago
And now my consolation
Is in the stardust of a song
Beside the garden wall
When stars are bright
You are in my arms
The nightingale tells his fairy tale
Of paradise where roses grew
Though I dream in vain
In my heart it always will remain
My stardust melody
The memory of loves refrain
Thanks for the lyrics. I enjoy the song more
They were copy/pasted from another singer's version of the song posted online. See my corrections if you desire accuracy and not just copy/paste piracy.
Thank you for the lyrics! Nice.
@Mysteries From Beyond No , it is "far" away, and "but" that was long ago. Google the original lyrics and listen to Nat King Cole's version.
STARDUST
And now the purple dusk of twilight time

@Mysteries From Beyond See my take on this if you want accuracy, or show us the original Hoagy Carmichael/Mitchell Parish sheet music if you want to prove your case and can dispute the correct lyrics. That is what you must do if you insist on your version, and think you are "accurate", or are complaining about "piracy." You are correct inasmuch as is "lonely night" and "beside" a garden wall are the correct words, but "far" away and "but" that was long ago, are the correct lyrics, not "fall" away and "love" that was long ago.

You are either going to the wrong sources to get what you think are the correct lyrics, or not listening carefully enough. Not a big deal, variations will work, but I don't like the way you criticized the person who was kind enough to post the lyrics, albeit with 2 errors.
Below are lyrics from Nat King Cole, who had one of the biggest hits with this song, please play it and listen carefully:
STARDUST

No better rendition than this
Nat King Cole is better
No this is IT
Beautiful song.....memory of love's refrain
Some masterpeaces will last forever ! ! !
Just beautiful....
Such a talented soul. I am so glad I lived during this time and was introduced to Johnny Mathis lovely ballads....
you could also try Nat King Cole's version...great as well...;)
Yeah I love both :) they should team up
I remember this song in 1975 when we were all taking our Real Estate tests. And once again I am young....Love it Johnny! Thanks
Only Johnny could do this song, and his voice re-makes this song into a "MASTERPIECE" !
absoultely the best song in the world, i want to be with my beautiful woman and hold her so tight as we listen to this song, thank you johnny mathis its mesmurizing !!!!!!!!!
Oh wow, wonderful, sent up shivers up my spine.. voices like this just dont come arounf often enough.. lovely guy.
Talent....!!!!
Johnny knows how to interpret a song so much better than most singers , I love the upbeat tempo ,best version I've ever heard and believe me folks I've heard a lot of different versions ,I wonder if other singers in the past were thinking, I hope
Johnny Mathis doesn't record it after me
Johnny's version of Stardust is unmatched because of his hauntingly beautiful voice at his best. For some strange reason, I always have Roy Lichtenstein's famous 'The Melody Haunt's My Reverie' painting in mind... whenever this song is on. Many art experts do not know the original source of the artwork but I do...and now you do too if you check it out.
This video is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!! IT SURELY BRINGS STARDUST TO LIFE! THANK YOU!!
How Mathis hits the second part of the song! (I notice he does the same in the live TV version posted hereabouts.) I can't believe he spends his lonely nights dreaming of the song - he's too busy rousing the neighbourhood with the full-throated operatic treatment. No, 'Stardust' is the archetypal nocturne - a quiet and contemplative song with a complex and meandering melody. Nat King Cole knew that.
This was the 1st ever rendition of "Stardust" I heard in my life over 30 years ago.
This is the ONLY version of "Stardust"! Thanks for posting it with that exquisite photo.
Beautifully done!! Thank you for sharing this with us.
