Mathis, Johnny - Something I Dreamed Last Night Lyrics

I can't believe that you're not here with me
To have a laugh or share a tear with me
It's all so wrong it can't be right
It must have been something I dreamed last night

To never see your funny face again
To never thrill to your embrace again
Oh, it's so wrong it can't be right
It must have been something I dreamed last night

Those midnight suppers for two
Our silly duets at dawn
Those crazy moments with you
Don't tell me that they are gone

To never look into those eyes again
The sun might just as well not rise again
Oh no, no, no, it can't be right
It must have been something I dreamed last night

I've set the table and a plate for you
Making believe you will soon be here
I watched the dawn sit and wait for you
It's impossible, hard as I try to convince myself
We've said goodbye

To never look into those eyes again
The sun might just as well not rise again
Oh no, no, no, it can't be right
It must have been something I dreamed last night

    The most emotionally evocative singing I've ever heard. I've listened to this song from time to time since its initial release and have never experienced another version nor another song to equal this artistic beauty with such soulful lyrics. Mathis has delivered many wrenching performances during his illustrious career, but none reach quite so deep into the well of sorrow as this. I'm still brought to tears by the agony of loss depicted here... bittersweet and beautiful. A companion piece by Johnny is found in "Once Upon a Dream" in his Broadway album, from Jekyll & Hyde.

    I have cried many a time listening to this song and picture waiting for "Sunshine" to knock on the door. It never happened. I truly miss her.

    "...those crazy moments with you - Don't tell me that they are gone...a shadow in the air was all that my fingers touched...How can I live without you" AND THEN, more magic, Glenn Osser does his orchestral spell..

    You have great taste in music. I'm sure I would like your mind.

    @Philip Dow Thank you! Just lucky to belong to a generation that became exposed to Johnny Mathis' romantic soul (Mitch Miller having lured Mathis away from jazz, notwithstanding).
    Other vocalists from Sinatra to Ella, and from Bennett to Streisand, may have come up with more dramatic renditions of certain songs that he covered. Still, I find that just as Sinatra's legacy should not be limited to his most popular songs, Johnny Mathis' repertoire with lesser known recordings (assisted by Glenn Osser, Percy Faith and others) must be acknowledged also.
    My list, all popular songs (nary a 'greatest hit' among them) includes:
    'A Handful of Stars';
    'A Lovely Way to Spend an Evening';
    'All the Time';
    'A Time for Us';
    'Blue Gardenia';
    'By Myself';
    'Bye Bye Blackbird' *;
    'Call Me';
    'Can't Get Out of This Mood';
    'Crazy World';
    'Didn't We';
    'Early Autumn';
    'Embraceable You' *;
    'Faithfully';
    'Heavenly';
    'Hello Young Lovers';
    'How Do You Keep the Music Playing';
    'I Concentrate on You' *;
    'I Was Telling Her About You';
    'I'll Be Easy to Find';
    'I'll Be Seeing You' *;
    'I'm Glad There is You';
    'In the Still of the Night' *;
    'In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning';
    'It Could Happen to You';
    'Joey Joey';
    'Let It Rain';
    'Let Me Love You';
    'Let's Love';
    'Live for Life';
    'Love Look Away';
    'Love Me as Though There Were No Tomorrow';
    'Man of La Mancha Medley';
    'Misty';
    'Moment to Moment';
    'Moonlight Becomes You';
    'More Than You Know';
    'My Foolish Heart';
    'My Funny Valentine' *;
    'My One and Only Love';
    'No Love (but Your Love)';
    'Oh How I Try';
    'On a Clear Day You Can See Forever';
    'One Starry Night';
    'Please Be Kind' *;
    'Poor Butterfly';
    'Ride On a Rainbow';
    'Small World';
    'Someone';
    'Something I Dreamed Last Night';
    'Teacher Teacher';
    'Tenderly';
    'That's All';
    'The Best of Everything';
    'The Flame of Love';
    'The Folks Who Live on the Hill';
    'The Impossible Dream';
    'The Lovely Things You Do';
    'The Twelfth of Never';
    'The Windmills of Your Mind';
    'Then I'll Be Tired of You';
    'There Goes My Heart';
    'This Heart of Mine';
    'Time After Time';
    'Too Much Too Little Too Late';
    'Warm';
    'Warm and Tender';
    'Warm and Willing';
    'What'll I Do';
    'What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life';
    'When I Am With You';
    'When I Fall in Love' *;
    'When Sunny Gets Blue';
    'Where Are you';
    'Where Do You Think You're Going';
    'While We're Young';
    'Wild Is the Wind';
    'Will I Find My Love Today';
    'Year After Year';
    'You Are Everything to Me';
    'You'd Better Go Now';
    'You'll Never Know' *.
    Regard ‘Open Fire, Two Guitars’ (*1959), with Al Caiola and Tony Mottola on guitars, Frank Canole (or Milt Hinton) on upright bass as his most outstanding album and 'Warm' a very close second.
    How’s that for a bold statement?

    such sad magic... this voice, this song. No one but Johnny Mathis can make one feel so good about feeling so sad. I've never experienced the loneliness of missing someone more than in this song.

    Right You are, this song has been covered by many, but no one but Mathis in my opinion, can convey the concept of this great song, you can picture everything in your minds eye, yep we have all been there, Thank You.

  14. R.... ....

    In the past when I played Heavenly, I never paid any attention to this song. One night a male friend, who loved Johnny Mathis, played this for me and we discussed it all night. It's a sad reality, and many of us have experienced it. Johnny interpreted it in song. Outstanding!!

    Absolute Perfection - Thanks
