Mathis, Johnny - I'm Coming Home Lyrics

Sittin' in a railway station with my suitcase in my hand
Goin' back where I came from, I've had more than I can stand
Of watchin' men destroy my dreams, they picked my brain till it was clean
When I was up they knocked me down
I ain't goin' to hang around, I'm goin' home

I'm goin' home, goin' home
Tell someone to meet me I'm comin' home

Came to this old town seeking fortune and some fame
Never got the chance to prove myself, though I tried to play their game
But usin' people just ain't my thing
And I don't dangle from any string
To please some fool that don't care about
They turned me inside out, I'm goin' home

I'm goin' home, goin' home
Tell someone to meet me I'm comin' home

Tell someone to meet me I'm comin' home

I'm goin' home, goin' home
Tell someone to meet me I'm comin' home

I'm goin' home, goin' home
Tell someone to meet me I'm comin' home

I'm goin' home, goin' home
Tell someone to meet me I'm comin' home

One of the greatest songs ever! Usin' people just ain't my thing. I won't dangle from any string!

  2. I.... S....

The original, recorded in 1973. Before the Detroit Spinners version. Absolute class. Pax to all from soulboy 73.Xxx.

I lived in New Orleans for over 20 years after moving there so my ex could attend law school. I know it sounds strange, but I hated the city. So corrupt and crime ridden. My last boss was a pain in the ass who would do anything for a buck and expected his employees to do the same for him. The line: "to please some fool I don't care about" really summed it up for me. I moved back to Texas in 2002 and am so glad that I did!!

I've loved The Spinners version of this for many years. And I didn't hear Johnny's version until 2017. Wow, this is beautiful. Might just be the best 'new' thing I've heard all year. And impossible to just play it once!

Ironically it was the opposite for me. I had known of Johnny's version since it originally debuted in 1973, but hadn't heard the Spinners version until perhaps last year. To me the Spinners version sounds like a rehash of Rubberband Man. Glad to hear you like Johnny's version so much. And thanks for visiting.

  17. S.... B....

i love this song, i used to live in england in hte 80s and whenever me and my parents were coming home in the car this song would blast out from the tape machine, makes me weep, lovely words

  26. C.... W....

    what song

  27. j.... ....

Great song that the Spinners re-did, and hit the Top-20. I've seen Johnny in-concert twice and sadly---he doesn't sing this one anymore....dang! One of my personal favorites!!! A great Bell-Creed production. I also love "Life Is A Song Worth Singing."

  28. j.... ....

One of his best songs....#1 A/C hit....followed up with "Life Is A Song Worth Singing." It's a shame he doesn't perform this one in-concert.....would be such a treat!!!

    j.... ....

jjhemingway, he just sung this in his latest concert, June 3rd in Westbury, NY. It was the opening song.

  29. L.... G....

Johnny is a timeless master who brings magic to anything he sings..makes you homesick if you're not in your hometown...

😊😊😊SUPER FAB SONG JOHNNY MATHIS 😄😄😄WE LOVE THIS SONG PATRICK N LIZ MAY 2016 😄😄😄

  31. T.... ....

I just listened to the Spinners, I'm coming Home, song and it is a different song altogether! Not even close to the ORIGINAL Johnny Mathis song!

    T.... ....

It is the same song though. But I way prefer this, which is of course the original. 😊

  32. T.... ....

Oh and by the way Johnny Mathis was the first to record the song! His recording is THE BEST ONE!!!

  33. T.... ....

This song, by Johnny Mathis, came out around October of 1973. I know this because my father had just passed away. Every time I hear Johnny sing it I think of, and it reminds me of, my late father. A Beautiful song and recording.

    T.... ....

Tom ,I'm sorry this reminds you of such a sad memory, it takes me back to one of the best years of my life. The autumn of 1973. I'm very careful not to play it too often, so as not to associate it with a different memory than its original. If that makes any sense.

    T.... ....

Tearing up thinking about your pain. I lost my father in '78. He was never the same after he came back from 'Nam.

    T.... ....

I was overseas getting ready to come back to the USA when this came out.. so it was identifiable

    T.... ....

Marion, none of us Vietnam Vets were ever the same when we came home. My sister told me some years later that she could see that I had left part of me over there. I'm an Aussie vet by the way and met some of your vets over there. I was proud to know them too.

    T.... ....

Same here same thing happened when my father died l always cry when I hear this song

  36. N.... j....

I love the Spinners but this is sweet. x

  37. R.... D....

Do you know of any other versions of this song other than the spinners

  38. e.... ....

BTW TheWolfvpl, Linda Creed and Thom Bell were never married, and Linda Creed had some involvement with the Spinners but it was mostly Thom Bell.   Check out the book "A House on Fire:  The Rise and Fall of Philadelphia Soul."  This book tells all about the Philly Sound with Gamble, Huff, and Thom Bell.

    e.... ....

No one cares about them...guess it's only you...bud!

    e.... ....

    @rick rodrigues
What a troll.  Keep your head in the sand.  Oh, and I am not your "bud".

    e.... ....

& take your's out of your arse dogface!

  39. e.... ....

This is a nice mellow version, but kind of bland.  Check out the Spinner's version--much more upbeat and soul-filled!

    e.... ....

    I prefer Johnny's version!

  40. c.... ....

I can vividly remember watching "The Tonight Show" and hearing this song for the first time.....and I fell in love with Johnny Mathis and bought the album the next day. It remains to this day one of the best albums I think I've ever heard. Thom Bell and Linda Creed were genius and I love every song on the album, especially this one and "Sweet Child." What wonderful memories I have of this album!

The world will be a much sadder place when Johnny Mathis doesn't sing anymore...

  51. m.... ....

I remember this song was popular when I was leaving home around 1974. Mr trash can, thanks for reminding me what a great song it was. Johnny Mathis was one of a kind singer, completely talented and professional.

  52. C.... H....

You got that right, Johnny. I'm goin' home! I'm goin' back to New Jersey tomorrow! Most of NJ Transit bus service will resume tomorrow.

  53. r.... s....

its just such a great song, love it, loove it loveit. ----does anybody know who is the composer of this marvelous song?

  54. k.... ....

Damn! I wish I had said that! Your taste in music is rivaled only by that of my own!

  55. M.... ....

    Thank you, my friend!

  56. D.... C....

Mr. Trashcan - Well, you've done it again. Great tune from yesteryear. Love the railroad pics too. I actually saw Johnny Mathis live about 3 months ago - he's still an incredible talent.

  57. o.... ....

Wonderfully sung.. his and Nana Mouskouri's versions are the best..!!

  58. M.... ....

@u000drl Not from Oreland, but from the Philly area. Grew up in the city and used to ride what was then the Reading RR. Oreland Station was on the Bethlehem (North Penn) branch of the Reading. I am also a model railroader/train buff, so it was instinctive for me to include pics of local stations in this song. Also check out my posting of Five Hundred Miles by Heaven Bound. I don't remember if Oreland is in there, but there are several SE PA railroad localities.

  59. u.... ....

    @MrTrashcan1
Dude Mr. Trashcan, the pic at 2:11 is Oreland [PA] train station-are you from that area? I live about 300 yards from there!

  60. M.... S....

    I've lived this song.

  61. C.... ....

That's on the radio here every morning. Love it.

  62. G.... ....

Brilliant Song!! "I'm Coming Home" from April 1973 had the right blend of horn sounds and rhythm in the tune. The world salutes Entertainer Johnny Mathis; and to wit, we commend him for his accomplishments. A Brilliant 6!!

  63. 7.... ....

Hadn't thought of this song in years. My mom used to play this album a lot when I was a very small child. It brought back memories of quiet afternoons in Boulder, Colorado circa 1973-74. Thank you.

  64. n.... g....

    super song-honest & wholesome..real

  65. I.... S....

@ratscisum Not written by Gamble and Huff but by Linda Creed and Thom Bell.Pax to all from 73soulboy.Xxx.

  66. j.... ....

Sorry, guys, got to maintain--Spinners version captures the energy, excitement, ebullience and true spirit of "coming home"---one of Phillipe Wynne's finest moments.

  67. I.... S....

@joefax530 No,no,no, this is THE version.Love The Spinners, but Johnny surpasses them on this.Pax to all from 73soulboy.Xxx.

  68. M.... ....

@joefax530 LOL. Johnny Mathis sings this as a beautiful ballad. The lyrics and the melody have a distinct beauty and melancholy to them. The Spinners' version sounds identical to all of their other songs and bears almost no resemblance to this. They essentially just plugged the words from this song into Rubberband Man. I loved many of the Spinners' songs. But please, to compare their version to this is just silly.

  69. j.... ....

Nice, but the Spinners' version from '74 is the true classic.

  70. j.... r....

I never liked Johnny until i heard this song in 1973. then i really came to appreciate him as a true artist. this is a wonderful song of my youth! thank you!

...Soooo lovely to hear Mr. Mathis sing ANYTHING...And thank you for all of the work that you put into sharing this, also.

  78. J.... K....

I suppose he was at his vocal peak around '73. Excellent song, arrangement, production, vocal...everything.

  79. S.... K....

My husband and I saw him in concert about five years ago. It was fabulous. This has always been one of my favorite Mathis songs, and I have many of them.

  80. T.... ....

I love Johnny Mathis!! I have every album he ever put out and this is my very favorite song. I had to bribe my friend to go with me to see him in concert somewhere around 1974. It was one of the highlights of my life!!
