Mathis, Johnny - A Handful Of Stars Lyrics

I recall the story,
That night of love and glory
A night that left my heart romantic scars
We stood so near to heaven
That I reached clear to heaven
And gathered you a handful of stars

Sweet remembered hour
When love began to flower
With moonlight through the trees like silver balls
And as the moon grew older
I reached across your shoulder
And gathered you a handful of stars

I placed my fingertips upon your lips
And stars fell in your eyes
Moonglow made a halo of your hair
Suddenly you looked at me and dreams began to rise
Oh, what things unspoken trembled in the air

Our hearts were madly beating
And then our lips were meeting
And Venus seemed to melt right into Mars
Then while we stood caressing
Blue heaven sent a blessing
A shower of a handful of stars...

NAT "KING" COLE recorded this beautiful ballad first.

    The Mathis song
with the most elegant and profound poetic
    content IMHO. The
    lyrics were written
    by Jack Lawrence,
who also contributed the lyrics for TENDERLY, IF I DIDN'T CARE, ALL
    OR NOTHING AT
ALL, and the English lyrics for
    the French song
LA MER, which was retitled BEYOND THE SEA.
    His daughter Linda was Paul
    McCartney's first
wife. He was born in Brooklyn of Jewish immigrant
    parents in 1912
    and died tragically
    from an accidental fall in
    his home in 2009
aged 96. The music was composed by Ted
    Shapiro (1899-1980) who
was born in New York City of Jewish immigrant
    parents. God was
working overtime when He created the voice box and vocal chords for
    Mr. John Royce
    Mathis from Gilmer, Texas.

While in the navy(1961-65) aboard the USS Boston CAG-1 this song was played almost every night that we were in port,we spent most of the year underway ,and since that time I've not heard it sung .....more than fifty years have passed

I was also in the Navy, as a radioman 2nd class at the Pacific Missile Range, Point Mugu, California,
and grew to love this song from
    listening to it on
    my phonograph.
    Certainly one of
    his most poetic
    and romantic recordings.

its nice, but i still prefer Dinah Washington's version

I'm reasonably certain that Messrs. Mathis and Faith did not set out to compete against any other performers, male or female.

His album 'warm' was I believe his best overall, every track is so listenable, I have been playing his music since the early 60s and saw him in concert in Hammersmith many years ago . I do however prefer his earlier work.

I own this album on cd- it's absolutely wonderful.
The 50s and 60s was the heyday for music, stage and screen.
    Where have those days gone?

I was born way after 1958 to remember this time and I am sorry I have not been around then : ) Nevertheless, I am enchanted with the music in this album! Beautiful lyrics! And Johnny Mathis ... what a perfect voice and sensitivity for exactly that kind of songs.
Love it, love it! Thank you SO much for sharing this album with others!
